If it was done in PS it was probably achieved using the magic eraser tool. Removing a solid background from a darker object produces decent results especially when also down sizing the image.

I tried that using paint.net. It appeared to remove the background and replace it with a checkerboard pattern. But when I uploaded it to GAF as an avatar, the background appeared white instead of transparent.
