So I jumped in and bought the Thrustmaster TX wheel. I really haven't touched any of my ps3 or 360 racing games since Forza 5 came out and with PCars and F1 this fall, it seemed like the time was right to transition. After selling my fanatec gt2 it was only about a $100 delta to "upgrade" to this wheel. I say "upgrade" in jest because I lost my clutch and shifter which will have to be upgraded later. Anyway, I mounted the wheel on my stand and have a couple of hours hot lapping rivals to get it dialed in and comfortable with it. My initial impressions:
1. There is some cheap plastic but the wheel, including the rubber grips, feels really solid. Not quite as nice as the alcantara on my fanatec, but nice.
2. I'm already matching my controller times, but I am used to a wheel. The main point is the wheel is very responsive and easy to use.
3. Pedals are surprisingly good. Very solid feel.
4. The FFB effects and vibration are absolutely phenomenal. Truly a next gen wheel. I don't know if it is Forza 5, or the wheel, or a combination of the two, but this blows the fanatec away. I can actually feel the tire flexing, levels of grip change, etc, etc. The most eye opening moment was driving through Prague and actually feeling my tires slip on the rails. It really felt like it does in real life. I'm very impressed with the tactile feel and feedback.
