Yesterday, North American PlayStation 2 racing fans got some of the best news they've heard in a long time. After delays of more than a year, the highly anticipated driving game Gran Turismo 4 finally got an official release date of February 22. Just a day later, Xbox racing fans heard some all-too-familiar news from the other side of the spectrum: Forza Motorsport is being delayed...again.

The official game page for Forza Motorsport on the Xbox Web site lists the new release date as May 3, a month later than the temporary launch window of April. Originally scheduled as a 2004 holiday release, gamers' dreams of racing the title's 230-plus cars on Christmas Day have turned to tearing up Laguna Seca on Cinco de Mayo.

For Xbox owners looking for an answer to the PS2-exclusive Gran Turismo series, Forza Motorsport may be worth the wait. Unlike its PS2-exclusive rival, the Xbox-exclusive Forza Motorsport will feature an online mode and damage modeling, the latter being something typically unheard of in realistic driving simulators.

Any advantage that game had is now gone other then online play

EDIT: Sales wise

Bomba!

What's humiliating is how GT4 is able to pull 1080i and this can't.

They should really just move development to Xenon and make an impressive looking launch title. Doing this would be ages better than releasing what seems to be a rushed title.

It's a pity though. I had high expectations of this.

So I played the demo today, and I'm completely underwhelmed... I was kind of interested (popped the disc in my system as soon as I got home) but man, was that the worst ride of my life. Of course, I knew it wasn't going to play like GT(3), but...... This???

I don't know what build that demo was, but if it's any indication of the final game's gameplay, then I would say: 'Tough luck kids, better luck next time'... I don't think a delay would help any at this point...

I'm actually wondering if these delays are to get it running at 60fps and have 1080i on the Xbox. These guys know their competition and what they are doing so maybe they are taking their time to be on the same level.

from what I heard, the demo is actually good....and Gek54 loves it...and that really says alot....

peace

I played with both assists on, and assists off. Neither works really fine I'm afraid. Of course, I'm not much of a racing-fan but I did play almost all of them this gen. I can't really explain it, but the controls seem a little, off....

And if they are trying to emulate Polyphony, they got a long way ahead of them... Full of speedbumps... ;)

Because it needs 60fps to work. At 30fps, you need to render the full 1080 lines, meanwhile GT4 gets this mode effectivelly for free.

Oh you don't have to use field rendering - but you will pay for it in performance and memory.
Now, I don't know if they have performance to spare, but taking away another 3MB for the larger framebuffers is a pretty big deal, especially if what Oxy mentioned about Forza already having issues with fitting everything into memory was true.

i completely agree

It's funny, I understand the 60fps argument but isn't it a bit silly to complain about Forza's lack of 1080i mode?

I don't think they can just redo all the models, textures, AI and everything, and put something up for launch at the end of the year.

Yeah the game got really bad publicity from CES. =P
Huh? Does that have anything to do with what I've heard about Bill gates embarassing himself on some speech he had at CES?
