The New York Times newspaper reports that the American comic book publisher Marvel Entertainment is working with the Japanese animation company Madhouse (Death Note, Paprika, Vampire Hunter D) to create four anime series with Marvel's superheroes that will premiere in Spring of 2010 in Japan. Marvel International President Simon Philips said that the characters will be re-imagined for Japan to create “something that is part of the fabric of society" and "an entire parallel universe for Marvel.”

Madhouse President and CEO Jungo Maruta said that the modern-day Marvel team is "so open minded" and added, "Although they say, 'I want Japanese anime,' it's not what they actually want. They want a hybrid between Japanese and Western animation." The only superhero specified by name in the actual production effort was Iron Man, a character that appears in drawings that have already been created. Philips told the newspaper that there will also be comics, as well as downloadable versions of the anime titles for mobile phones.

Manga versions of Spider-Man (pictured above) and X-Men have already been created by Ryoichi Ikegami (Crying Freeman, Mai the Psychic Girl, Sanctuary) and several Shogakukan artists in Japan. In fact, there was a live-action Spider-Man television series that had a parallel-world Japanese Spider-Man piloting a giant robot. C.B. Cebulski brought Kia Asamiya (Silent Möbius, Dark Angel), Takehiko Ito (Outlaw Star), Katsuya Terada (Zenbu, Blood: The Last Vampire), and others to various Marvel Comics titles after he became an editor there. Del Rey is collaborating with Marvel to create an X-Men shōjo title with writers Raina Telgemeier and Dave Roman and Indonesia-based artist Anzu, as well as a Wolverine title with writer Anthony Johnston and an unnamed artist. (Marvel created a Mangaverse line of comics with mostly American and Canadian creators in 2001.)

Pow! Entertainment, the production company of former Marvel Comics president and comic creator Stan Lee, revealed that it is working with Shueisha, BONES, and GDH (Gonzo's parent company) on three separate projects: Ultimo, Heroman, and Quartz, respectively.

Maybe it'll be linked with the Shoujo X-Men manga being made.

More shows like the Spectacular Spider-Man and less like this potential shit.

You realize Spectacular Spider-Man WAS potential shit, right?

Everyone was saying how horrible it looked until it came out and was awesome.

Which is why it is only potentially shit. This anime stuff could turn out good, but nothing has me thinking it won't be shit; I am just open minded enough to accept that it might not be.

looks awesome...Isn't that Tobias's art and that was almost 2 years ago...

Whats the verdict of Spectacular Spider-Man? I've watched one episode and did not enjoy but I have been hearing the name mentioned quite a few times here?

Ugh! Not reimagined stuff! No!

Ever since those Japanese TAS X-Men intro's showed up, I've been seriously jonesing for a full X-Men anime done in the same way. Do it! Then that revitalises Marvel in Japan so... Marvel vs Capcom 3. DO IT.

Marvel Recreates World Renowned Super Heroes for Japanese Culture, Partnering with Leading Japanese Animation Studio Madhouse

Madhouse to produce cutting-edge Japanese anime series based on Marvel Universe

NEW YORK--As part of the company's aggressive strategy to grow the exposure of its character franchises in international markets, Marvel Entertainment, Inc. is partnering with Madhouse - one of the top Japanese animation studios in the world - to create brand new characters inspired by the Marvel Universe for the Japanese market.

Working closely with Marvel, Madhouse will produce cutting edge Japanese anime series based on Marvel's world-renowned character library for the Japanese market. The characters will be adapted visually, using the unique style of Japanese anime, and their back stories and histories will interweave the local culture and history of Japan, with an eye toward making their mythology more relevant to the Japanese audience. This collaboration will result in a completely new character base, which will eventually cross-over into the current Marvel Universe.

“Marvel has continuously looked to push the boundaries with the Marvel Universe and seek new mediums for our characters. Madhouse is helping us expand the Marvel brand with a truly global vision tailored to themes and artistic styles popular in Japan, creating a uniquely localized and cross-cultural adaptation of the Marvel Universe,” said Simon Philips, President, International & Worldwide Head of Animation, Wireless & Gaming for Marvel Entertainment. “With over 35 years of experience developing and producing worldwide entertainment hits, we are confident Madhouse will be able to translate the vision of the Marvel Universe through the unique anime style, to create captivating new entertainment that will thrill both new and old fans alike.”

Madhouse is currently in production on the first of four new series (12 x 30 minutes), which are scheduled to launch in spring 2010. The initial series will feature characters including Iron Man and Wolverine, among others, and Madhouse will ultimately look to adapt the entire Marvel Universe, creating in essence a whole new character base for Marvel.

“We are incredibly excited to have this full collaboration with Marvel to create a completely new world that has never been done before in the Marvel Universe. This will be the first time there will be a full Japanese anime style for Marvel, and the Madhouse creative team is fully engaged to bring this to a worldwide audience,” said Jungo Maruta, president and CEO of Madhouse Inc.

The Marvel anime series will debut on ANIMAX, the first and largest 24-hour network dedicated to anime.

Additionally, Marvel and Madhouse will be exploring related merchandising initiatives to support the new series.

It's the best animated product Marvel has ever put out, and the fight choreography/animation is top notch (now that Spidey and his enemies can actually trade punches, unlike the old show).

I can't wait for an Avengers Tokusatsu where they will shout "GATTAI! AVENGEROBO!"
Was done already in Avenger's Assemble in marvel's mangaverse. They all drove vehicles that combined to form giant ironman armor.
