Just when you thought Fox News couldn't lean any more right...they fall over.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Fox News apologized Friday for posting phony quotes from Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry on its Web site.

Carl Cameron, a Fox reporter who covers the Kerry campaign, wrote an item that looked like a news story with made-up Kerry quotes, said Paul Schur, a Fox spokesman. The item was not intended to be posted on the site.

"Carl made a stupid mistake which he regrets," Schur said Friday night. "And he has been reprimanded for his lapse in judgment. It was a poor attempt at humor."

The phony item posted early Friday read in part:

"Rallying supporters in Tampa Friday Kerry played up his performance in Thursday night's debate in which many observers agreed the Massachusetts senator outperformed the president.

"'Didn't my nails and cuticles look great? What a good debate!' Kerry said Friday.

"With the foreign-policy debate in the history books, Kerry hopes to keep the pressure on and the sense of traction going.

"Aides say he will step up attacks on the president in the next few days, and pivot somewhat to the domestic agenda, with a focus on women and abortion rights.

"'It's about the Supreme Court. Women should like me! I do manicures,' Kerry said."

The item also quoted Kerry as saying of himself and President Bush: "I'm metrosexual - he's a cowboy."

After withdrawing the item, Fox posted a statement on its Web site, http://www.FOXNews.com apologizing for the error. It said: "The item was based on a reporter's partial script that had been written in jest and should not have been posted or broadcast. We regret the error, which occurred because of fatigue and bad judgment, not malice."

Cameron has been a political reporter for Fox News since 1996, Schur said.

Asked about the incident, Kerry spokesman David Wade said: "America would be stronger if only George Bush could admit his mistakes as easily."

This is even worse than CBS. They consciously created an entirely fake news story and POSTED it on their website, passing it off as actual news.

wait...CBS didn't do a fake story and posted on their website, and television show?

If Fox was trying to pass this off as actual news, they would have left it up. It sounds like he was goofing off and he hit the send button before fixing the story.

It wasn't a fake story; the MEMOS were fraudulent. And CBS didn't create them either.

The memos and how they created the story to be broadcasted wouldn't have pass a journalism 101 class. mary mapes is still trying to pass the memos off as genuine.

I can't help being right. If he was trying to fire off a story with fake quotes, You can do a helluva better than that. It reads like a parody.

Too bad there was no advisory of satire.

It wasn't meant to be, he was goofing around, posted by mistake. As I said, if he was going to post fake quotes in a story, it was a terrible job that looked like a joke from the getgo. At best he gets suspended without pay.

I think anybody with common sense knows that Fox News has a mostly right-wing agenda going. Hell, the whole 'Fair & Balance' tag should've been the first indicator. CBS News has alot of people that would like to see Bush out of office and, no doubt, allow that to impact their reporting. There's no such thing as news without bias as it’s always going to filter through people that, themselves, have bias. Because of such slant, we get stupid shit such as what occurred as CBS and Fox News. When stuff like this does crop up publicly though, I seriously think heads need to role. The guy that wrote that article, however sardonic, needs to be suspended if not fired for not prefacing the article as such. Whoever was in charge of the research behind the whole 'Memogate' thing probably needs to get canned as well. As for Dan Rather himself? I'm honestly not sure what should happen there...

People goof around and fuck up. The guy made a bad joke and the story was accidentally posted. I applaud Fox News for retracting it and apologizing. How very "un-Republican" of them. :D

Even if the guy was writing a parody, he is supposed to be covering the Kerry campaign, either you let one of your news orginization's established satirists write the parody or you don't publish it. When the guy you have covering the Kerry campaign negatively parodies that campaign you are no longer fair or balanced, you are however, a large rather unpleasant douche bag.

---edit---
if I had my way everyone would get their news from PBS, I love PBS

In the Ontario election a Conservative party staffer accidentally sent an internal e-mail to the press that called the Liberal party leader a "Repitilian kitten eater from another planet." Even though it was clearly a joke it showed that the Conservatives were dumbasses and it cost them dearly...

This is a different story because it's coming from the media, but still, even if it was intended as a joke it did get out and should be cause for discipline at FOX news. Too bad they are so biased towards the Republicans so its not like the Democrats can deny them access or anything as FOX probobally doesn't give a shit.

CBS should take note. When you make a mistake - retract immediately.
A whole article filled with mocking quotes is not a "mistake." It doesn't get put there "accidentally."

Regardless, it was good of Fox News to step in quickly and take it down. "Just joking around" or no, it was still posted as "news" and that is childish and irresponsible journalism. There's just no room for this kind of nonsense in the news.

They even posted an apology. Real classy of Fox. CBS could learn from this. :D

:lol Yeah, he must have hit that "send" button too soon, and boom, there it was. Obviously, the technically lacking Fox News website probably don't have an "edit/delete" button right next to the author's username like the mighty advanced GAF has.

Yeah, the article just fuels our suspicion of Fox's biases.

Anyways, after the CBS memo affair, the press has practically become neutered. Every time they may say something bad about Bush, they're going to be afraid of being another example of "liberal media bias".

Ripclawe, you become more pathetic with time. Drop the pathetic evasion, the weak-ass excuses, and come out and condemn Fox for printing lies. Seems only the decent thing to do unless you're a feeble-minded hypocrite whose views of what is right or wrong depends on which political party it's done to favour.

When working for Microsoft, a friend of mine was demosntrating to another how to post articles on one of their main news / info pages. He made up an article and talked through the motions of submitting it, but claims he never actually completed the final step...

The next day, he got a very angry call from his manager's manager wanting to know why one of MS's home pages featured the title "This World Sucks." This was back in '97 or '98 so the page probably didn't get too many hits... he didn't lose his job, just got a scolding.

At any rate, I don't think the ass-clown who did this should be fired, I just think people should just start to realize that Fox News is staffed by ass-clowns.

As long as they're not Fox News, right? Fox News points out just as many bad points about Bush as they do about Kerry.

I didn't say anything about Fox in that particular segment. Don't put words in my mouth.

Smegging smeg of a smeg!
Fox has an article where they quote a member of "Communists for Kerry":

"We're trying to get Comrade Kerry elected and get that capitalist enabler George Bush out of office," said 17-year-old Komoselutes Rob of Communists for Kerry.

"Even though he, too, is a capitalist, he supports my socialist values more than President Bush," Rob said, before assuring FOXNews.com that his organization was not a parody group. When asked his thoughts on Washington's policy toward Communist holdout North Korea, Rob said: "The North Koreans are my comrades to a point, and I'm sure they support Comrade Kerry, too."

I'm happy they took them at their word that they're not a parody group, not to mention that the kid interviewed can't even vote yet.

Anyone who read the FOXnews.com site with this story and then accepted it as truth is way, WAY stupid. Honestly, this looks like an unfunny portion of The Onion.

Actually, the Fox spokeman neglected to mention that Carl Cameron is the CHIEF POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT for the entire Fox News organisation.

Gives you a lot of faith in the network doesn't it?

No, perhaps not a parody group, but...

"Communists for Kerry" is a campaign of the Hellgate Republican Club, a tax exempt non-partisan public advocacy "527" organization

From the Fox News story:

It is unclear whether the Kerry campaign has welcomed the Communists' endorsement.

That does it. Fox is officially news for the functionally retarded.

Is it the same "Communists for Kerry" group? It's a catchy name. If they are the same group though, then Rob would be lying or playing word games.

Same group. Click the "Communists for Kerry" link in the Fox article and then choose "About Us" (last link on the left side of the Communists for Kerry page) and that'll bring you to the page I linked above.
