Free Comic Book Day Website!

What is Free Comic Book Day?

Free Comic Book Day is a single day - the first Saturday in May each year - when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE* to anyone who comes into their stores. (*Check with your local shop for their participation and rules.)

When is Free Comic Book Day 2010?

The 1st day of May also happens to be the 1st Saturday in May so that is this years official Free Comic Book day!

So who exactly sponsors this shindig?

Ape Comics
Archie Comics
Archaia Studios
Boom Studios
Dark Horse
DC
D&Q
IDW
Image
Marvel

Plus others like C2E2 as well as Comic Con are also in on the act.

Is this really well real?

Sure it might sound fantastical, but yeah it's the real deal. Granted it'll vary on what shops give out, and how many they are willing to give per person. Plus not all shops are involved, but that's why there is a store locator on the website!

What exactly am I gonna get?

Click Here to look at the list of comics being given out!

Am I gonna get the usual not in the USA shaft?

You might, but that could happen in America too. Thankfully this is a world wide effort. Shops in Canada and around the Globe who want to participate can! Just check around at your local comic shops and see if they know about it!

Should I really care?

Sure the comic list might not be huge, but it's a good time for all cause you know it IS free. Plus even if your not into comics or have fallen out, it's a good time to get back in even casually. Just think of it as a good reason to go visit and poke around your local comic book shop. You never know what you might find that'll interest you. Plus who knows what else might be going on there.

As the people who set this day up have said, it's a day not to just celebrate comics, but to also celebrate all the independent comic books shops throughout the world! Oh yeah and you might meet some fellow gaf nerds or other nerds in the process! :D

Has anyone ever been able to just pick up one of every comic thats free? Always wondered this...
It depends on your store's rules and regulations. Some shops make you buy a certain amount before you can get free shit. Some let you just walk in, take as much as you want, and just walk out. Last year my shop just had them in bins by the door. Their customer base is pretty small, so they had enough inventory for everyone to just pick out what they wanted. Even so, I only got like three issues.

UGH....I'm already dreading this day. Mother effers come in for free comic books and that's all they leave with. cheap asses.

imma grab all the free superhero comics and take them outside and burn them

:P

I can't wait.

Went to like 5 stores last year, ended up getting like 50 comics.

But my partner in crime is MIA this year.

Woo! Free comics.

Looked at the site, nothing really interested in but I'll stop by anyway.
That site doesn't have it but all 10 Image Firsts reprints will be free too.

Then I'm gonna take all the indie shit and...wait, no. I just like comics and don't have issues with what they are. >=[

Seeing as how I'm OCD about that stuff, I'll stay away from any special branding.

Cool, its the initiative to get more people into comics, but all that it results in is regular LCS customers picking up free stuff

True, but how much does it really hurt the stores? Doesn't it just hurt the comic pubs giving away free shit?

Pretty shitty list this year, although there's really only one or two books every year that are worth it anyways.

Sucks that I have no LCS. Closest one is 45 mins away. Always done my purchases online. I may just bite the bullet and drive down there anyway. South Florida has some of the best.

Doesn't hurt anyone, people walk in, give them free comics, done. Lot of people just come and grab the free stuff and leave, but it gets people to come to the store which is not a bad thing. Exposure for the store, free promotion, some people will come in and buy other things, etc.

Tate's comics is one of the greatest comic shops, make a weekly trip :D

It definitely is. When I lived closer by I would go there often. I did however go down there for the sale a couple weeks ago. Snagged some good trade paperbacks I was missing. Damn those lines though. :lol

I have 5 free comic day things ordered through my DCBS order for next month but I might go to my LCS and pick a couple more things I wanted. I like to throw some business to my LCS whenever I can get out there anyways. I remember picking up a copy of Green Lantern Rebirth Trade one FCBD along with some free comics. The trade that changed my life forever...

Plus its funny to watch the people, alot of Star Wars fans come out on that day in full gear. Last year I saw two chewbaccas, 3 princess leas, countless stormtroopers and one R2D2.

Started my current comic collection with GL Rebirth/BN0 last year on FCD, maybe I'll get into Marvel this year :lol

Science heroes, atomic powered robots, floating brains piloting other robots. Very good.

Are these comics the normal 22 pages of content? It's not fair that I can miss issues of my favorite series because I couldn't get one. I hope I'm able to snag that Mouse Guard issue. Are these fcbd issues collected in the TPBs/hardcovers?

Depends on the comic. Out of the ones I picked up or skimmed in shop (yes I picked them up on wednesday) were mainly full length though not always a singular story. Iron Man/Thor is full length, Iron Man/Nova has a back up of Super Hero Squad, War of the Supermen is full length, DC Kids is a full length collection of shorts (Billy Batson, Tiny Titans, think there was something else). Mouse Guard is 13 pages and the other half is Fraggle Rock...

Obviously some of the other comics are samplers but it should be pretty obvious what's what.

I'm really hyped to see if my local shop has the Oni Press comic sampler shown on the free comic book day website!

Anyone else in New York, Forbidden Planet has the best setup. Get there when they open and they've got every FCBD book in a nice package, first come, first serve. 10 AM is when it starts.

It also happens to be a fantastic store.

Nice, I was going to go to Forbidden Planet anyhow, since its closer than going to Midtown, and the lines weren't as insane last year.

And gave away free Wolverine claws.
