Abandonware isn't illegal stuff...is it?

Considering their Betrayal at Krondor page links to a google search of many 3rd party sites illegally hosting the game (probably since they got told to take it down since it is not free), I'd count it as a pretty shady source for things legal.

I saw Freespace 2 Open Source Project and Babylon 5 IFH, but here's another good one if you're not into the Newtonian physics of IFH.

The Babylon Project

It's Babylon 5 using the Freespace 2 engine, with a buttload of content, and of course Freespace's map editor.

Cloud. A free PC game from That Game Company (Flow, Flower, The Journey).

home.jpg

Cloud is an acclaimed action flight game that allows players to realize their life long dreams of imaginative flight, manipulating clouds and creating weather. "A childhood dream simulator" is how many of its fans describe it.

It is about a kid kept in the hospital daydreaming himself fly in the sky, making shapes out of clouds and eventually use rain to clean the world. The game was designed to evoke everyone’s fantasy about clouds and flight, and their best wishes towards the nature.

The game is completed as a USC game innovation lab research project. It had over 500,000 downloads over the internet. And triggered a heated debate of whether video game is art.

Beneath a Steel Sky, an old little Point and Click adventure by the makers of Broken Sword and artwork by Dave Gibbons (Watchmen). The CD version has been ported to iPhone and they added a hint system, a cutscene and better audio quality, if anybody wants to play it on the go.
This game is also available for free on GOG.com.

I don't think it's actually illegal. Most of the time, it's something that can't be sold and is so old, the company died years ago lol. I doubt Sierra cares one bit if you download the old DOS version of Police Quest.

Doesn't matter. It is illegal until the company / person that holds the rights to the game allows its free distribution.

It's amazing you didn't notice the "not pirated!" in the thread title.

Every game entry in that site contains info regarding the legal status of every game. You just have to check if the game is in legal limbo, freeware of if the legal owner has put the game up for free. It IS amazing that you did not check the site before making accusations.

Again, all you had to do was to go check the site and check the legal status for each game you're interested in. It's all there.

Tyrian: 1995 shmup. Features a massive amount of content and happens to have fantastic gameplay as well, in large part thanks to the extremely wide array of upgradable weapons and equipment. There is also a large amount of unnecessarily good writing of varying degrees of importance. Plus the music is by Alexander Brandon. Everyone should play this.

Tyrian tyrian oh god tyrian. I love Tyrian. Download Tyrian 2000. You _may_ have to run DOSBox to play it though.

Vied for a tag related to cocks, so here it is.
This thread is fantastic. I'm gonna be away from home during the week with only my old Ubuntu running laptop and these games will do me perfect under WINE.

A neat little game out of DigiPen. This team was also nabbed up by Valve for Portal 2. It's a great little one hour or so puzzle game. You spray the paint on the ground, and it gives you different properties. Green makes you bounce, red makes you run fast, and blue (and blue's the best) makes you stick to any surface.

The goal of transformice is for you and your mice friends to deliver cheese back to your hole. It sounds simple right?

I'm not really sure how to describe this game, other than it being similar to a gamebook. A single playthrough of the game takes about 30-45 minutes and there are about a dozen variations to the central plot. All in all, it is an enjoyable experience.

Are there instructions anywhere on how to make this work? I read the FAQ and it isn't really any help.

Extract the opentyrian-w32-201003190345.zip and then extract the Freeware tyrian21.zip into the same folder. Make sure all the tyrian21.zip files go into the same folder as the opentyrian, and not it's own folder.

STRANGE ADVENTURES IN INFINITE SPACE
Explore the galaxy...in 20 minutes or less!
In the 22nd century, colony ships were programmed to search for earthlike planets along trajectories calculated to visit stars with the best likelihood of habitable worlds. One such ship with its crew and passengers in cryostasis traveled over 2300 light years before a suitable planet was found.

Hope is a temperate world located in the Glory system on the edge of a vast nebula often referred to as the Purple Void. The nebula is unique in that it contains many unusual star types and other peculiar phenomena.

Over 100 years have passed since the colonists first arrived. It is a new beginning of deep space exploration. Technology has improved and mankind is no longer dependent on slow cryoships and robot probes. This is the setting of Strange Adventures In Infinite Space.

Sail the high sea of stars in your own deep space exploration vessel. Discover exotic star systems; seek out new technologies, artifacts and lifeforms; boldly blow up stuff where no one has blown up stuff before!

SAIS is different every time it is played. Stars, planets, black holes, nebula mass, alien patrols, items, lifeforms and other encounters are randomized for each new Strange Adventure.

Playing time: 5-20 minutes
Number of players: solo
Difficulty: variable
Replayability: infinite
The full version of SAIS features:

21 different ship types
69 different weapons, drives, shields, gadgets and artifacts
18 alien lifeforms
17 different planet and star types
7 unique alien races

If you didn't catch it, there is a few hi-res graphics packs at the bottom of the page. Nothing to make the enemies look better though.
I'm ok with the graphics, I was talking more about the controls...

masq is awesome, thanks a lot:D

I played Masq a few years ago and I distinctly remember its telling me I had so many free playthroughs left. So I suppose it was free for a while, then you had to pay. Has that changed since?

I checked the site before posting and saw that they had download links for many games which they did not state as being freeware or released to the public, such as Dune.

I would imagine that legitimate freeware titles are clearly listed as such on the site, but they have download links for seemingly every game, whether freeware or not. The vast majority of listings on that website are of pirated content.

What's the community like now? Still busy? God I poured some hours into this back in the day.

Looks like there's close to 4000 people currently playing Enemy Territory. Surprising and impressive.
