The X1 and the PS4 shouldn't be that different, both have an OS for games, an OS for other apps, and "something in-between" to hold everything together. If they're aiming at similar features, it's not that surprising for them to have similar resource usage, even if we still don't see why the non-gaming part requires as much.

I'm actually going to buy a PS4 next-gen. I was primarily a 360 gamer this gen and I have no plans on buying an xbox ONE.
From Microsoft's and SONY's track record, Microsoft does have better engineers.
The PS4's superior architecture stemmed from outside help along with SONY's lucky high-density GDDR5 module gamble. Microsoft always planned on having an 8 GB machine, so they stuck with DDR3 and had to develop a way to engineer around the piss-poor bandwidth of the DDR3 RAM.
It was dumb-luck that gave SONY the superior machine.

Ugh. I'm sure OS alone is quite lean and efficient. If they're really keeping 3.5 GB reserved it won't be to only run the OS but for apps, recording, etc.

I didn't want to start a huge fanboy war, but yes I do find it weird that so many people are going "what guys, 5.5 GB is AMAZING going forward!" when MS was so ripped apart for it over the last few months.

Eh, it's different. On a PC performance for any individual app isn't guaranteed. If you have 15 things running and then load up The Witcher 2, you expect it to run like shit. It can't work like that on a set top box. You put hard restrictions on the the number of things that can run simultaneously, but you also have to guarantee resource availability and performance. So between smooth performance across the board, lots of OS functionality and small memory footprint, you pick 2.

Steam survey shows hardware configurations, not what games actually use.
Most games don't make use of more than 4 gigs of dedicated video memory OR system ram. IIRC, it's limitations with Windows, more than anything.
Not saying it can't be useful, but I don't think you should post that as evidence of anything.

If this news was true, which I doubt, 5.5 might be 'an incredible amount', but it would be even more incredible if games could be designed with the full 7 originally speculated. 4 might be enough 'right now', but when games get more complex down the line, the more RAM, the better.
There is a case for Microsoft blocking off 3 GB of RAM. They have the always on kinect and a bunch of multimedia functionality going on. Sony has no such thing.

The 360 released 1 year before the PS3 and both consoles were neck-and-neck in terms of performance. Microsoft also spent less $$$ than SONY on R&D.

Uh... People are complaining? What? Initial rumors/tests was hearing around 2 gigs available to games and X1 was around 1.5. 5.5 would be incredible and stop comparing PC ram to console ram use... Not even close to the same thing.

Sure there's a point. Saving disc bandwidth for the actual streaming of game assets.
I'm all for saving the 15 minutes of video in RAM. Just downsample it to 720p and apply a good amount of compression to it.
You are right, it's not the same thing. Console OS memory footprint has always been much smaller than on PCs.
This memory might be reserved, but it's not for the kernel.
You may want to browse the thread again. Every page has at least 2-3 posters saying this is stupid, unwise, etc.

Well, I'll just come out and say that a few insiders confiemed 7GB available so this conflicts with that. Either Eurgamer are wrong, or some devs are, or Sony made some changes. We shall see. But if Eurogamer is wrong on this one they're going to lose a shit amount of credibility, so I can't imagine they'd take the risk without some backing. The plot thickens.

It has to do with the fact that GDDR5>DDR3. Even if you don't have a greater amount, the quality still makes it better. That's not to say I agree with it being "amazing" because it's disappointing but I'm not getting all worked up until we get an official statement. Sadly, that's not going to stop people from overreacting and trolls coming by with asinine statements.

Regardless, I think the Quantic Dream Tech Demo shows that Sony was planning about 4-5Gb of available memory for developers for a long time. I stand by the assertion that you build a 'Tech-Demo' to show off the theoretical graphics capabilities of a machine. You don't write an entire engine for this.
Quantic Dream built The Dark Sorcerer and made it run within 4Gb's of RAM. Developers will all use those 4Gb's differently, but they wanted to show the upper limit of what is possible.
Not sure when people will realize that it's the GAMES and services that should be the draw, and not the ram. It's weird watching people turn their back on what they call a cool looking game simply because the other machine has (had) more ram (but never mention a game). I don't play ram, I play fun games.
