FRIDAYTON MK II: 5.5 million bears and salmon create unholy allliance to sack SONY HQ

Its funny how the ps4's specs were on par with the x1 when we thought it only had 4gb gddr. Now people are flipping out that it has 1.5-2.5gb reserved for the OS.

Yeah, I staged this for almost a month and a half.

Order total: $0.00

The different reactions to
(1) "3 gb for an OS footprint is unacceptable" vs "Reserving 3.5 for an OS footprint is smart"
(2) "We can't trust "goals" for changes to dev-kit memory allocation" vs "Well obviously they'll cut down the OS and give more memory to developers"
(3) "Wait for an official statement" vs "Why would they admit something bad, it's obviously true"
(4) "It's all about the games!" vs "Yeah, they've announced more games, but the other company has more unannounced games."
(5) "Yeah, many titles look sloppy, but it's pre-alpha! Assume it will look better" vs "Sure, their titles look polished, but they're six months behind and rushing things."

All very interesting.

This obviously only applies to a select few.

That report was right by Sebastian. He predicted the future that everyone would cancel their pre-orders about this news and Xbone would overtake the PS4.

I remember Durante saying quite a while back that visually there wouldn't be any difference between a system with 5GB usable ram and 7GB (all else being equal). Given info per frame would be limited, the underlying operations can only get so large. I had thought that the extra 2GB would help with caching data for better load times.

Given the deed accomplished by 1GB gfx cards today, I am not worried for the moment.

However, all the anger surrounding this situation is clear: It's less about the potential ramification of the deduction and more about the perception of a greater number that most of us had assumed given the way the instrument has been marketed, especially given the fact that it received 100% jump in the amount from earlier leaked documents.

Plus, for the life of us, most of us can't imagine just why would the OS need to be so big given feature-wise it will never reach parity with xbone due to kinect. Also, for the time being, there is no mention of "cable tv" related features either which is another source for sequestering memory.

Here's what I fail to understand: Why reserve another GB for devs "if they need it"? Why not simply make it 5.5GB and be done with it for the time being?

That's something I don't understand either. 1.5 for the OS, cool. An additional 1 GB for 'additional features'. Ok... But then another 1 on top of that being blocked off for no apparent reason? If Sony was going to block off all this RAM, as much as the One, I wouldn't be as mad if they actually DID something with it. There's a reason the One has so much RAM blocked off such as kinect integration, all the TV functionality, 3 OSs, etc. I fail to see what feature on PS4 necessitates that potentially more is corralled off.

Here's the deal...somewhat. From a dev at one of the biggest in the industry. Just a messenger here.

Dev still a little cagey to give out 100% concrete numbers unfortunately like I was previously told, so I apologize ahead of time that they're not as detailed, but these are supposed to be the closest to detailed info I get on the OS footprint:

-At most, the OS uses 1.5GB, with a good amount of that helping the HD recording feature and on the fly switching/ multi tasking
-4.5GB is indeed about what's available for devs at present.
-1GB is set aside for futureproofing OS operations down the line.
-1GB for developer reserve, should they need it

And finally as an important point, I'm being told the faster RAM in the PS4 does in fact make a huge difference.

This sounds much better. Like others have said, I guess it makes sense for Sony to have an extra GB set aside in case of some new feature (like party chat) becoming a big deal.

Because they would be used for different things? Also it says developers can access the reserve if they need, I understand why they would want an OS reserve.

I completely understand an OS reserve, though 1 GB seems like overkill. They should gain over the years from optimization so why not use that as your additional overhead at the point you need it?

I don't understand a 'developer reserve' of an additional GB though.

For example, caching web browser loaded tabs in ram for instant resuming. But if the game requests that ram, the web browser would reload those pages the next time you launched it.

So it can bring performance benefits for the OS for things that don't absolutely need to stay active in ram

Fixed ram would need to cover suspended game state and whatever the maximum number of active OS apps would be

The OS at the end of the day is a big part of the console experience and one of the most celebrated parts of the PS4 was the share stuff and Gaiki. I'm sure 2, 3 and heaven forbid 4Gb is enough. We got Shadow fall on that right?

MS and Sony will play it safe (like many already stated). Sony more than MS since the ram really placed them in a bad situation this generation.

footprint will go down with time.

Cancelled my wedding because of Sony.

hahaha

I won't complain as long as all games look as good as this...

So you don't think ram will ever be an issue over the run of the PS4?

You make it sound as if this distribution is permanent throughout the life cycle. Hint:
IT WON'T.

Let's assume that 7GB was available. You don't think ND or SSM would burn through it?

This early in the generation? Haha, no.

That extra GB isn't actually available yet due to limitations of the current dev kits.

That was literally my next question, and I posted a few pages back, still can't give out too much info on that one apparently. Supposedly can be "called back" from dev tools. The bottom line is that it's there if required.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Blow said "more than 5GB," not 6.

Plus he's taking a brute force approach and just loading up all of the world at once instead of streaming it in piece by piece. If the RAM is there, why not?

Regardless of the amount reserved at launch, devs on both systems can almost certainly count on an increase in available RAM. The unanswered questions are how much and when.

That is what I am saying. From a planning standpoint they would probably assume that 5.5 will be available and plan accordingly.

.

Let me throw that question back at you :

if you gave them 32 GB of ram you don't think ND or SSM would burn through it ?

There is a solution to this : optimization .

I'm enjoying this thread so much. The crow is going to be epic.

Canceling preorders? Are you people for real?

Why not? E3 was the pinnacle for Sony, and that's when a lot of people preordered. Since then MS has been working to get better, and Sony has been slowly slipping. Framerate issues on launch titles, unknown noise levels of the tiny form factor, and personally no launch titles that get my panties wet. Could it just be that this has muddied which console people are most interested in.

My condolences to the families and anyone who was hurt or killed at the Sony HQ in this tragic Bear/Salmon attack. This world needs stronger Bear and Salmon laws. I hope nobody is going to blame menstruation drawing the bears in since there were no female presenters at the Sony E3 event so that couldn't be it.

What's interesting is that 4.5 go of RAM still is 1.5 x the amount of what's available for devs on Xbone (3go). This is actually a huge difference when we are talking about porting games.

Er no. PS4 has 4.5Gb. Xbox One has 5Gb. Xbox One has more ram for developers.
