FTL: a game about managing a spaceship in an infinite galaxy

Can anyone recommend a space game to play while we wait for FTL?

I have seen good remarks about this game and it seems fairly complex:

Evochron Mercenary

I am thinking about picking it up and trying it out this week as well.

I wish I could remember the name of another space game I got addicted to years ago. It had a top down style and was more like an RPG version of Freelancer or something. Lots of story quests.

I loved the hell out of it but I ALWAYS forget the damn title.

Have been playing this all day...so unbelievably good. My only complaint is that €25 seems a little steeper than the €10 to get beta access...

I donated 100$ when the total raised was around 300$. Been waiting for this game. I absolutely love the demo, managed to last a whole 30 minutes with plenty of life to spare. Wish I could play more at a time.

Edit : Wrote a short thing about it on my newly relaunched site. With video

Could barely play it through onlive since my internet is horrible but when it worked it was great. So I just gave them $40 and with this, Idle Thumbs, and Double Fine, Kickstarter has been great.

Well, it turns out there's a huge ass easter egg in FTL. I'm uploading footage of it right now to my Youtube channel, should be up within an hour but I'll be asleep by then. It turns out there's more than Sector 2. :)

Keep an eye on : http://www.youtube.com/maskedgamer

I'll upload a recording of the entire session tomorrow, for now it's just a peek at how I actually managed to bust my way into Sector 3. The larger vid has another 3 hours of encoding, then it needs to be uploaded.

Awesome, spent the better part of the day yesterday trying to finish off sector 2 as well, though I am surprised to see that the demo continues past that point.

Based on my own failed attempts and your successful one it looks like the most important thing is heavy shields and multiple 1 energy missiles. I had actually given up on missiles because most often I found 2-3 energy ones along with expecting a high evasion rate. Also looks like the ships drone configuration is variable (I can recall running into it with double anti-ship and as I recall at least once with a defense drone).

Most other strategies I've tried to work towards are just too resource intensive (multiple anti-ship drones/multiple-burst lasers). My best run I had 2 mk 2 burst lasers and level 2 shields, and did manage to at least temporarily drop his shields and deal minor damage.

I could have sworn there was already a game called FTL: Faster Than Light back in the 1980s on home computers, maybe the C64 or Atari ST. Am I mad?

Success! Sector 2 clear. Made it to sector 5 just as my time ran out. =D

For the end of sector 2 had level 3 shields, an anti ship drone, artemis and breach missiles, and mk 2 burst and mk 2 heavy lasers. Powered up missiles blasted hit their weapons, took down his shields, switched to lasers, he repaired his shields, I switched back to missiles and just pounded him till he blew up. Finished the fight with some hull damage but all systems green.

Ended the demo with level 4 shields, 5 weapon charges, and level 4 engines. Felt pretty beefy at that point.

Nice man, pretty cool easter egg eh? :) Sounds like your ship was in better shape than mine, I really should have gone for his weapons from the start. Did you have to attempt multiple times, or did you get it on the first attempt?

My video upload of the defeat of the boss finished and can be viewed at:

The full video from start to finish will be up in a few hours.

You're probably thinking of "Sundog: Frozen Legacy" by FTL Games. It was a bit different in design.

Space Rangers / Space Rangers 2

Took a handful of attempts, mostly to get the proper gear but also to get a favorable ship spawn. If it has 2 attack drones or even 1 defense drone (they shoot down missiles) things go bad in a hurry.

Another fun thing I noticed was that the boss ship is manned by one of the alien races shown on the kickstarter page, rather than humans like the rest of the ships.

Fantastic idea, but I'm not on board mostly because of the graphics.

Now, if someone were to take this idea and steal Sins of a Solar Empire's look and scope, and I'm there.

came in here thinking this was about Infinite Space for the DS

Infinite Space is a science fiction role-playing video game that allows the player to design and control a spaceship. The player can customize the ship with over 150 different design models, along with over 150 possible crewmembers.[7] After customizing a ship, the player can explore an expansive game world with a story spanning two galaxies.

PSA: Today is apparently the last day of availability for the OnLive demo, so make sure to check it out while you still can if you have yet to do so.

Edit: Looks like official end time is 11:59 PM PST, on Sunday 3/18.

The description of this reminds me of that game I saw a thread on a long time ago on GAF, the website based zombie one, where people had to try and keep their town alive as long as possible.

Wow, the description of putting out the fire sounds incredibly tense. Will check out the Mac version once it's out.

Loved the demo of this whilst it was on OnLive - I used up my 30 mins on my account, my girlfriend's account and a third one I made up just for this demo :D

Now to eagerly await the kickstarter beta...

You can replay the demo (30 minutes at a time) as many times as you'd like from a single account (until 12PM PST tonight). I'm pretty sure I've logged well over 20 hrs in the past couple of weeks. =/

....drat.

Though it's not showing up on UK Onlive anymore

Definite purchase. Won't have time to deal with the beta so a simple $10 grab was good enough for me.

tell me how do I play this right now!

You're too late for the alpha demo (was on Onlive, but taken down now)

To play as soon as possible, support them on Kickstarter with $25 and you'll get access to the beta when it launches in a couple of months - otherwise you're waiting until probably October

I really enjoyed my time with the demo and absolutely can't wait to get my hands on the beta - really hoping for a lot of ship and crew customization in the final product
