Before the G20 summit in Hangzhou, there was a welcoming ceremony gala for the bigwigs at West Lake, which is one of China's most famous and picturesque destinations. One of the attractions at West Lake is a daily artistic performance held right on the water that was directed by Zhang Yimou (popular movies include Hero and House of Flying Daggers). I'm not really sure how to describe it. I guess think 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony mixed with a Cirque du Soleil show with less acrobatics. I've been lucky to see it once. It's a pretty good spectacle although since you're sitting far away, it's hard to see all the details and you just have to take in all the color and imagery as a whole.
Anyway, the opening G20 ceremony was directed by Zhang Yimou also and uses some of the same performers and stage props as the daily show. Cool thing is it was broadcast on China TV and there's recordings on Youtube. I was particularly impressed by some of the shots which are absolutely gorgeous. And better yet, you get a better and close-up view of the action, which again is hard to see when you're sitting in the grandstands.
It's an hour long show and some sections are totally skippable. My favorite part was the ballerinas prancing on the water, so at least watch that section (29:00)
