FUN Games with BAD Control

how the hell has this thread reached this many posts without someone mentioning Metroid Prime? that game is the mainstay of all the "bad controls" debates!
The other prerequiste was for it to be FUN.

The GTAs are the clear "winners" here.

Back in its day the original Prince of Persia was considered to have unresponsive controls. ICO inherited that as well. :P

Splinter Cell. Way too confusing.
Seconded. I forced myself to adjust because the game is so flippin cool, but they really don't make any sense. For a game as popular and largely budgeted as Splinter Cell the controls should be way better (same with the GTA series).

I bought the original PoP for Genesis about a year ago, tried playing it, and it is impossible to play now. With modern 2D titles like Skullmonkeys, Klonoa, Viewtiful Joe and SotN in my system, I could never enjoy a game with controls like this again. Sadly Flashback and Out of this World are in the same boat...

Legacy of Kain series since Soul Reaver. It could be fun, have fun combat, but the controls make it a chore and ruin the series epic story by making combat something to dread.

Gunvalk. No, just no. My god who's the douche that thought pushing in the analog sticks would accelerate or boost of whatever it was called.

PN03. I understood why the controls were made that way, as it was the whole point of the game, but they could have smoothen some things out to give the game a more faster paced feel.

3d GTA-games definately,

though San Andreas was somewhat better, the onfoot controls still sucked compared to say, halo

Armored Core series. Weren't they the ones that still didn't use the analog sticks even when the series moved to the PS2?

yea, that shot down MP for me

Resident Evil is the obvious answer and it's come up alot

and I'd also like to nominate the cat racing game from Timesplitters FP

I never found RE to be that fun in the first place. Just a game with cheap thrills, awful voice acting/dialouge/story, and horrible controls.
that's exactly why i like it.

Super Mario 64 DS (NDS)
P.N.03 :lol (GCN)
Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO (GCN)
Dynasty Warriors 2 (PS2)

I'd say any PSP game that uses the analog "nub" as it's primary means of control. That nub is like the worst thing that could happen to handheld gaming if Sony doesn't plan on moving it on their next handheld, much worse then the touch-screen. Though Virtua Tennis seems okay, but I haven't been able to get my friend's PSP long enough to really decide that yet. There are also many DS games that feel quite uncomfortable, especially SM64DS, but there are also games that fit it peferctly, I have yet to encounter this with a game on the PSP (VT might be the first ime).

I thought the touch control in Super Mario DS was quite good actually. Its an excellent way to practice your left stylus hand.

I did not "get" the thumbstrap controls, and controlling with the stylus felt unnatural, so I just used the d-pad. The run button was the worst part of d-pad controls, it should have been walk button.

"Metal Gear Solid 1 and 3."

Care to elaborate?

MGS2 improved on MGS1 controls and fixed some of the problems. The game was also running at 60fps, unlike part 3, which made aiming in first person mode much smoother. Other problems with MGS3 were the crappy CQC controls, the time consuming menu navigation, and simply the fact that the combination of the awkward camera and more organic environments made it much easier to run into things than in previous games. The sharp corners, smaller levels and "always-on" radar made the controls in MGS2 adequate.

Super Mario 64 DS
Ice Climbers
Burger Time

Ice Climbers was such a fucking awesome game, but OH MY SWEET LORD IN HEAVEN were the controls and collision detection AWFUL. UGH!
Burger Time is also a fantastic game marred by, at time,s very unresponsive controls. Which really kills the game, since it's so based on quick thinking and manuvering.
