Fun while it lasted - GAF blocked at work

I think it's only a matter of time before GAF gets blocked at my work. The second page of Siliconera is blocked "Malicious Software not allowed." xD IGN videos work but Youtube doesn't, and I can access Facebook if I just put https:// in the address bar.

I have my phone though so I will be okay if it gets blocked but it's quicker to type with a keyboard than a phone!

Zepherback you are definitely a kindred spirit brother! High five!

I have been doing it for years, they cant expect you to be working 8 hours straight sitting down in front of a screen, if its not GAF, its reddit, 4chan, Facebook, NFL, ESPN, Fantasy sports, or any of the thousands of distractions there are online.

Its not like "oh no they blocked X site, I guess I will work now instead", people just find another alternative, I do GAF, I know other co workers do Facebook, Instagram.

Found it blocked today as well. I can use my phone obviously but the Verizon data limit sucks and I don't want to disable images :(

They blocked GAF once at my work and I flipped. The stupid ass proxy blocked anything with video games. I understand sites that let you play games but media sites like ign and gaf?? Uh.. I basically told them if they didn't fix it I would file a complaint. Why is ESPN, Facebook, Pinterest and E! Ok? But video games aren't.. It's my hobby and I want to read the news and journalist side of the industry.

The HR manager agreed and it's been fine for years.

It's blocked where I work and we use Bluecoat. Luckily, I know a guy who knows a guy.

They told me you can actually try to get it unblocked here: http://sitereview.bluecoat.com/sitereview.jsp
Well trying this wont hurt I guess.

I assume the games category got it blocked but looking at the description of the games category it doesn't really fit there as the description says 'games sites are categorised if they contain downloads of games and support/host sweepstakes and giveaways.'

Years of Neogaffing at work and now today it's blocked. I've dreded this day. OP you and I must work for the same "company".

Well now I have nothing to do but actually earn my paycheck or learn a new language or something.

Most businesses that bother to block neogaf will probably block google translate as a proxy.

I wish I knew what caused neogaf to suddenly start getting blocked.
It's super weird. If I go to Google Translate and put GAF's url then it doesn't work. But using that exact url, it works. It's beyond weird, lol, but I'm not complaining.

Which is why you report it as being an incorrect classification on that site, and hope your work doesn't block it based on forums/newsgroups

Well after almost four years, neogaf is blocked here as well. And before people ask, I only check gaf at lunchbreak.
Google translate trick works for me.

I don't understand companies that block Internet traffic. It's rare that anyone has 8 straight hours of work to do every day and if you don't let them do what they want to do during their downtime, they're just going to resent working for you.

Or you could, I dunno, actually do extra work or help others?

www.megaproxy.com is a free browser based proxy, you get a daily limit, but Neogaf sans images should not trouble that. You can't login, browse only.

You can install tunnelbear.com which gives you an IP tunnel with 300mb free a month, you can login and post using this, but need to be able to install the software on your work PC.

Use Windows Remote Desktop to log in to another PC and browse neogaf from there. There is a hack to enable Remote Desktop on all flavours of Windows 7. http://www.raymond.cc/blog/enable-remote-desktop-connection-in-windows-7-home-premium/. No need to install anything on your work PC, but IT may have disabled the Remote Desktop program. There are alternatives like Splashtop and TeamViewer, but I'm not familiar with them. Google Chrome also has Remote Desktop features in a beta release.

If you are really desperate then you can use the Google search cache to browse, a bit of a pain, because each thread requires a new search before you can access. Sometimes just changing the thread page number in the search cache URL works. For example http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=735041

Another avenue I haven't explored yet is hosting proxy software on a Wordpress blog, see guide here: http://lamp.sangkrit.net/2012/07/14/make-your-own-proxy-site-using-wordpress/

Finally I believe NeoGaf could help us all if they enabled HTTPS on the site. That is often a good way through a firewall as all the traffic is encrypted.

Can't you get fired for doing these things? I work in a call center for a big company and I have heard about them getting on people about their browsing habits

Same for me from Toronto. Years of Neogaf and then this morning - Boom! Locked out. The IP let's me browse but .net is the same as .com.

Looks like I'll be posting a lot less.

Hey you're right!

I should man the fuck up and take up the fight at my work, currently anything video games is blocked, including NeoGAF.

Same has happened to me. Been able to surf gaf for over 3 years at work no problem, now all of a sudden it's catorgorised as a gaming site and I can no longer access it :-(

Edit: I'm in London but work for a German company with a German IP (all ads come up in German)

All the game sites I visit including gaf haven't been blocked at my office yet thankfully. But I always have my phone or laptop to fall back on.

So two weeks ago I started skimming GAF from work occasionally. Didn't take them long to do something about it apparently.
Oh well back to work.

Ps. No NeoGAF.net doesn't work either, anyway it would probably suffer the same fate in two weeks too.
Fuck! same here, bro. we work at the same company?

Or you could, I dunno, actually do extra work or help others?

I'm not sure what you do, but in a lot of businesses there is no "extra work". You do what's briefed and when it's done you have nothing to do until you get feedback.

Where do you guys work that you have time to browse GAF?

Web development. When it's busy, it's really busy that you can't do anything else but work. But when you're not, eh, what else is there to do but web surfing? The managers know this as well and do it themselves. Caught some of them on Facebook or surfing websites.

Yeah I guess it depends on the field. I work in industrial and here it's pretty important for everyone to be spontaneous. If you aren't then that's a sure way to never get promoted.

my last job had a strict No Video Game Websites policy. Anything with the word game in it was blocked. And sometimes it went over board and blocked news articles on yahoo about video games.

But in the 3 years I worked there, I was able to browse Gaf without a problem. I found that strange. I always assumed that it's because Gaf isn't well known or common knowledge.

I work on the infrastructure team, I told our lead security architect at lunch one day that I needed to browse GAF and he had to open for my IP or he'd wait a week for me to install his new switches. Thats all it took.
