Of all the fetishes in the entire world, this one is really harmless. You guys know this to be true, you've all seen what horrors the internet has. I mean, yeah, it's a bit weird, but really pales compared to the REALLY creepy stuff.

Yeah but what do you get when you combine this with those other horrors.

I know a few people who go to sell stuff there. While I know a number of normal, well adjusted furries I'd be afraid of going. I've heard too many awkward stories to have any inclination.

Completely regardless of any opinions on the core "furry" thing, I really don't understand, even if you're into furrydom, why the costumes are attractive. They all look like Disneyland mascots.

Yea, I have no problem with smaller local furmeets, but... hell, PAX can be a little too awkward for me sometimes.

It's my understanding that the costumes are generally meant to be more fun than attractive. The way people go about planning, constructing, and wearing them isn't really all that different from Halloween.

You're not the only one confused by that. The people I've brought it up with tend to claim that they only like the well made ones without dead eyes, but it seems a bit silly to me.

In one survey, 33% of furries surveyed online answered that they had a "significant sexual interest in furry" and another 46% stated they had a "minor sexual interest in furry", and the remaining 21% stated they have a "non-sexual interest in furry". The survey specifically avoided adult-oriented websites to prevent bias.[11] Differing approaches to sexuality have been a source of controversy and conflict in furry fandom. Examples of sexual aspects within furry fandom include erotic art and furry-themed cybersex.[31][32] The term "yiff" is most commonly used to indicate sexual activity or sexual material within the fandom—this applies to sexual activity and interaction within the subculture whether online (in the form of cybersex) or offline.[33][34]

According to a study, 19–25% of the fandom members report homosexuality, 37–48% bisexuality, 30–51% heterosexual, and 3–8% other forms of alternative sexual relationships. In 2002 about 2% stated an interest in zoophilia, and less than 1% an interest in plushophilia.[9][35] Initial figures were collected by David J. Rust in 1997, but further research has been conducted to update these findings. Of the furry fans that reported being in a relationship (approximately half of the surveyed population), 76% were in a relationship with another member of furry fandom.[9]

From wikipedia. Interesting stats.

I'd like to know the female to male ratio.

Some of them can get pretty ornate. An acquaintance of mine made all of these:

In the end it's no different from other forms of cosplay which I enjoy, so I don't judge.

how do you live with yourself

I didn't mean to blame, they keep running in front of my car everytime I pass. I suppose it was inevitable for it to happen.

I felt guilt all day though. Least it wasn't a bunny.

Blame would you ever wear a fursuit?

That's the main argument in favor of having them I've heard myself. Being in a fursuit allows one a sense of anonymity and dehumanization that allows people to be a bit more outgoing and ridiculous than they would otherwise. People see some random person dancing around then coming up to them for a high five and they'd likely shy away. They see the same thing being done by somebody in a fursuit and are far more likely to see it as something fun and ok to play along with.

Granted, at the same time they're more likely to be decked in the face while wearing a fursuit... being dehumanized in the eyes of others has negative side effects as well.

Before anyone makes jokes about them getting decked because they're in fursuits, it happens to mascots at sporting events all the time.

I'm sorry. I'm guessing you didn't get the memo that the furry community is like 99% male and gay with 1% male and straight.

And I only know this due to the furries in my high-school circle. *sigh*

It's because there's a lot of DNA of actual mascot suit builders, designers, and performers from the 1990s in furry fandom. Many of them held panels at conventions offering a look at how suits were constructed and classes for hobbyists, whether furries or not.

I'm under the impression that because of that, the construction template for the classic 'mascot' suit is the most common within the community. So things tended to drift that way... but then, it is true that it is mostly for that kind of public performance / fun.

Still, by the same token you do see people in the fandom crafting much more refined costumes, like this:

From what I've seen, and the people I know of, it's actually going a bit more in that direction these days. Probably no different than how costuming in anime fandom is getting more sophisticated (and there are obviously crossovers between groups, so design techniques and materials get shared).

Yeah I live in Pittsburgh and go to film school downtown. It's weird as shit to see all the furries casually walking around. However, local business LOVE anthrocon because of all the business it brings.

I plan on shooting a documentary on it next year. Starting pre-production in the fall. I figure someone will end up watching it, like this one juggalo documentary I couldn't stop watching out of sheer astonishment. /shrug

Damn, my GF was in the planning stage of doing something similar though not as soon. Well, at least that means I may not have to go to this in the foreseeable future. :lol

Haha she's welcomed to be involved, just PM me. I already have 2 producers making plans for fundraising. We have 2 teams lined up, A which is for all the interviews, and B which is for all the B-Roll of the con and following a subject we have been talking to who is looking for love at the 'Con as like a side-narrative. It'll be interesting to say the least.

Yeah, Indianapolis is the same way about GenCon. It brings in more money then sporting events.

FYI Anthrocon is pretty old.

With that said Anthrocon doesn't necessarily mean = fursuits. I've seen pics of people just wearing ears or cosplaying as TF2 characters there. TF2 is really big with furries it seems.

What is it about furry fans in their teens getting fatter as they get older? I dated two guys when I was a teenager, and now they are both fat. :( They were so cute before.

Nothing. I realized the other day that for some reason I had held this out as one of my last bastions of prejudice. Like, I am cool with so many previously taboo societal behaviors that it's wrong to single this one out for mockery. I should just get over it and accept and embrace them.

But I can't because they are the last weirdoes.
Are you me?

I definitely respect some of the more elaborate costumes even if it isn't my thing personally, enough years in theatre have made me respect anyone willing to put that much work into it. On the flipside, on my campus a week or two back, there were these two guys who actually wore the goddamn human-sized colored foxtails at the college. One walked into our cafeteria building and we were like "what the shit," so when the next one came walking along (he had to have been like 20 yards away or so) I just screamed out a whinny like this and he heard it and my friends started busting up laughing. Immature? Sure. Was it worth it? Definitely.
