Anyway, in my case a Half-Life mod made me furry. The Specialists. There was a fair number of furs in the community, I wound up checking out the webcomic Jack, pretty soon I'm checking out the IRC arena and hanging with other furs. Took a little time but I settled on my current rabbit character, which I've had now for maybe.... seven, eight years. (Also made the character on the right; last year or two of high school I was constructing this whole sitcom world kinda thing, for whatever creative reasons. Was almost writing a webcomic as a result, but really not much came of it.)

No stuffed animals, no fursuit. I do have a bunnyhat. It is purple and fleece and practical and I was wearing it before they apparently became cool. </hipster> I got a little hate for it in college, but I also got one vote for Student Government president filed under "the guy with the rabbit hat" so I win.

As for gender/sexuality matters, avatar quote. Seriously, between me and my off-and-on ex (who's a snow leopard) it's sometimes hard to say who's the girl of the relationship.

You know what, furries? You're alright. I've only just come into this thread, but I'm guessing you guys have seen the Orangina ad that was screened here in the UK? That wasn't bad at all. Anthropomorphic animals are alright.

Yep pretty much. That's when I found out about furries, to be honest. I mean, what was with the octopus? But still, it was alright. You guys just keep on doing your thing. It's pretty awesome, truth be told.

I remember in gaming-age forums early days I created a thread about a great free MMO. Then linked them to the furcadia program in the actual post. It was quite amusing seeing the reactions.

I'm actually curious about this thread, because I've been wanting a chance to get to understand the whole furry thing a little better. Not for my sake (as in, I don't have any reason to believe I am one), but just to maybe wipe away some of the ignorance I have about it all.

When I was first introduce to "furry", it was via a couple of people who really, really creeped me out about it all due to who they were and how they acted. So, right away my opinions on the fetish were skewed. But then, in coming to better appreciate all of the issues surrounding the transgender community, I started to wonder if maybe I shouldn't be a bit more open-minded about other groups&#8212;such as furries.

(Not that I'm directly comparing the two, or think they're close to being the same kind of thing, to be clear.)

So, this might be an interesting thread for those of us who don't understand being furry, and hopefully the thread doesn't descend into total hell and ruin that chance.

As for me, I've had a few experiences with stuff that could be considered "furry", but almost never has it been on any kind of sexual/fetish level. I think Amy from Sonic is totally cute, but not in that internet Sonic fan kinda way. Also, I've found a few pieces of furry art that I've liked over time (including hentai), but my interest in them has usually been more because of the nice art style or subject matter, so they've been cases where the characters could have been human instead of furry and my interest level would have been exactly the same.

Like, there's this one site that produces various short story comics that I really like, but it has far more to do with the... other element that tends to be a common thread in them. *laughs*

Sometimes, though, there's just something really cute about furry art. Like, I actually recognize Uchip, because I always find his/her avatar to be cute. But my interest in stuff like that tends to be "oh, that character is cute!" not "oh, that character is a cute furry".

Edit: Oh, I do think Fran (from Final Fantasy XII) is totally hot though! But I think she falls under the "catgirls aren't furry" rule.

When I get reminded that the Furry community is in fact a real thing, I marvel at how truly fucking strange the world is.

Keep on bein animals furries, I may not understand it, but I will defend your right to be the animal of your choice.

squaresoft knows the limits of where characters stop being attractive
that didnt stop people from turning the rat girl from ff9 into a sex object though

They probably would, they just would be reluctant to be seen in public with them. Until some 6'7 football player starts trying to hit on her in the Starbucks, then they would get jealous and weird and clingy.
