I've been on the receiving end of people from other fandoms trying to shove what they're into in my face, trying to 'convert' me before so I know how unpleasant that is, and I'll try not to do that to my friends. I won't outright say that I'm into anthro stuff to them out of the blue, but if it ever comes up in conversation, I'll tell them the truth.

The only fandom that I've noticed as being super obnoxious was the bronies during the height of that group's popularity; all of the bronies I know IRL are just regular otakus now and seemed to have mellowed out. I remember the bronies as being very aggressive. They would colonize other fandoms and just make pony versions of everything, not to mention they seemed very sympathetic to things like GamerGate and other alt-right nonsense. I remember them seeming to enjoy making other people uncomfortable and wrote off any criticism of their often terrible behavior as people just disliking them because they were bronies, not because they were obnoxious. It was awful and I'm glad that group is mostly gone. The remaining brony hold-outs seem way less annoying than their forebears.

But hey, they made other Internet fandoms, namely otakus and furries, look way better by comparison so that's nice.

Oh, threads alive, brilliant.

So a long time ago I read (cracked?) that peeps drawing furry art made mad bank. I have no idea if there is truth to this, but I had a Breaking Bad moment and considered getting into the trade.

I never minded furries, always thought the art they made was really good, as this thread shows.
Hell, even my first comic character I made when I was 6 was a raccoon/squirrel mix creature that wore jeans. So there was history to it.

Well anyways I've looked up well known artist and the like to inspire me. I personally really like CookingPeach's coloring and lighting. Despite being really lewd sunbee really has a good grasp on anatomy.

Coincidentally, that guy I mentioned was a brony, and I stopped talking to him because he revealed that he was heavily involved in alt-right stuff. The last time I talked to him he said he was going to a Milo show later this year. Yeah, they do make us look better by comparison, and I think my family would take me being a furry a lot better than if i was into that.

I'm not so sure about that, I've seen a few artists do emergency commissions for medical bills and such. There are outliers like Rukis/Blotch/Goldenwolf, but I think they do "normal" art as well.

Have you considered avatars/headshots/reference sheets? Depending on how fast you produce work you can probably make a couple bucks on the weekend. If you can stomach it, the weirder fetishes have a severe lack of talent pools (for good reason).

Umm, don't ask me how I know about that last part... .____.

Your family? Are you telling your parents about it too? I can't imagine how awkward explaining the whole furry thing to my mum and dad would be but if you plan to do that anyway, feel free to tell us about their reaction. 😋

Well yeah, most parents would be puzzled by their grown children watching cartoon ponies, to say the least. My dad still teases me for liking Pokemon and playing Magic, but as long I'm doing well in university he doesn't care about my personal hobbies. It's not any of their business anyhow.

Funnily enough, my mother read the entirety of Blotch's Under Thin Ice and enjoyed it. Imagine her disappoint when I told her they never finished the story! xD

Oh, no, I don't plan to do that at all. I plan to keep it a secret for as long as I can. I just meant that if they ever found out somehow, it would be less awkward than finding out I watched a show aimed at six-year-old girls.

Dat orc... hhhhhnnnnnggggg. So glad a mainstream game like WoW has such hunky orcs. They're not even really furry, but whatever. Blizzard likes to exaggerate muscle size like tons of furry artists do.

I even have Grommash in storage in my closet. :)

Hmm, not a fan of them. Bethesda has a poor track record even with non-human faces. Bodies on point however.

Argonians though? That one SAM/Shape Atlas mod for males does some work. I make a fat/muscular lizardman and then adjust the pecker size to the lowest value. xD

Random question- Is there much money in writing furry fiction? From talking to different furs IRL I've got the impression that some highly-skilled people make a living off of drawing furry art, and theoretically anyone can make a little bit off of doing commissions if they can hold a pencil, but with fiction writing, it's a lot harder to do that and it's especially difficult to get noticed if you're not writing NSFW stuff. I love to write, and I'm wondering what you think about this.

To those of you more familiar with furry art rates... I'm looking to hire someone for monthly thumbnails of adult comic pages at $50 a sketch. I'd like to try collaborating on an adult comic featuring my own characters with someone where they thumb and I ink and color (and add my own flourishes ofc) and I'm wondering what asking price is appropriate while I shop around. The idea is to do a collab patreon and I'm willing to do the heavy lifting... it's just that I'm not too familiar with furry art as a whole (outside of my own, I stick to art for myself or paysites, rarely use FA, and don't use tumblr/twitter) and the artists that I know charge double that per sketch page!

Oh, I think Hop is a writer. She hasn't posted here recently. I don't think she takes commissions, but she can probably fill you in on the details.

Sorry about how suggestive most of these are but I'm home from college for Thanksgiving this weekend and I want to capitalize on that; I wouldn't want my roommate to see this lol
Anyway Miles-DF mostly draws porn so whatever. I like his artstyle enough to post his work here and if I just stick to the SFW furry artists I'm gonna run out of art to post here pretty fast.

And whichever one of you sent in that Krystal anon confession, you're my hero!

Yikes, that's the last time I open this thread in public! I don't think anyone saw. >____>

I like the doberman/rottweiler with the grapes.

Out of curiosity, what is everyone's stance on the
whole diaperfur thing?
I'm kind of embarrassed to admit to such a thing. There's something to be said about a big muscled tiger guy wearing something totally unmanly. Sorry if this is rather sudden, I just want to figure out how "weird" that is in the general furry community.

I think it's gross, no offense. And I think a lot of other furries feel the same considering it seems to be something of a joke in the fandom. In terms of general weirdness, the only weird fetishes that I can think of that seem to be more or less totally accepted by furries are macro and vore, but I don't necessarily have a problem with either of those so that doesn't bother me that much. (I guess you could also say BDSM is popular too but that fetish, from what I can tell, has essentially no social stigma anymore.)

It's cool, I was just surprised. Usually it's not so spicy in this thread.

No offense taken, I know the whole DL thing freaks people out sometimes. Ironically enough, macro and vore make me squeamish. I guess the whole "forbidden" aspect is what makes it compelling to me. There are few artists like Colt3n/Sharklypadded who do cool/funny stuff in this subgenre. I think there's a certain awareness that this is a fetish even furries are hesitant to check out.

Thanks for commenting, I can't make it to MFF due to other commitments, but I just wanted to gauge the general atmosphere regarding this kink before I head out to a con. I know there's been a few "issues" with people in the scene making other con-goers uncomfortable. It's supposed to be a hotel room thing, you know? If you're aren't medically impaired, leave it in your luggage. That goes for BDSM/leather as well. Although most furries seem to be okay with the latter. :p

I think it's pretty offputting but I openly tolerate it. The only real offenders are those who basically antagonize artists who aren't into their fetishes to do work they don't want to do.... which is not cool.

I know not all diaperfurs are into baby play/ messy diaper/ etc so I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

It isn't. Neither is walking around dancing shirtless in front of buildings. Again a lot of things a tolerated but aren't encouraged as a whole. BDSM gear/ diaper suits on front of families/ children is horrifying to all of us. You can't imagine how shocking it was having people like me and Sketch and his brother (all huge hispanic dudes) in an elevator and having this older tiny woman asking us what is "wrong" with "those" people when we usually get grim stares and silence.

Chain mail gets a pass though 'cause why not.

That being said the furry community is pretty resilient as far as fetishes go. Not a whole lot rustles a lot of feathers and people learned how to keep things out of each other's way.

I was referring to BDSM online, not in public. In public that's gonna freak out everyone, particularly kids and hotel staff. It seems as a whole "mainstream" kinks like feet and BDSM are taken as a given in the community. Although anything fetishy is not okay in a hotel lobby or public spaces, drawings of leather furs are uploaded online without complaint. The AB/DL art seems to draw the ire of the community, even if it's properly tagged and it's the only genre an artist ever does.

I'm not into the babyfur thing at all. That stuff makes me incredibly uncomfortable, but it's hard to distance yourself from that group when the only difference in the artwork is the age of the character. I mean, it's such a small niche to begin with.

Just a vent post here but finding furry art to post here (or just finding furry art in general) can be really fucking frustrating because of how distributed this fandom is. Like, there's multiple furry-specific websites (with FA being the main one and a total piece of trash like seriously), and that's in addition to tumblr and twitter. And to top it all off, a lot of artists don't even post many of the commissions they draw anywhere, it is just between them and the client. Which if it is a personal piece I understand but then a lot of furries just turn around and post all their commissioned works on their own personal blogs / accounts anyway, so they're out there, just really difficult to find. Some of the artists I follow have probably drawn way cooler things than what I can even find just cause I'm not following the people that paid them to do it.

Like, here's an example:
Really cool artstyle, right? This was drawn by crocstew, but when I go to crocstew's blog not only is this picture not posted but most of what they have there is just basic doodles. Frustrating, right?
(The character in the picture is Alex; she belongs to simulacrament [NSFW]. Alex was actually one of the characters I wanted to include in my cool fursona design post earlier but my browser ran out of memory.)

So I'll see cool reblogs like this, think, "Hey, I've found a new artist for an art dump post!", then realize I can't find most of their very best works, if any.

And that's not even considering the artists who post on pay sites exclusively. (No offense Breads.)

My excuse is pretty simple. I don't do commissions and it's hard to justify public work financially because I've been on the professional side of things for so long that doing something for public spaces literally comes at the expense of doing work elsewhere. Some people find time for it... that time for me is currently being spent learning flash, aftereffects, FL studio, and Reason for future projects. Although conventional wisdom says I should do the scattershot socialmedia strategy thing to spread my furry work instead I would rather just use Gaf as my safe space against the worst parts of the furry community!

I have done commissions and public work... and indeed I collected a backlog of commissions that I owe... but I had to stop taking new ones because I don't have time for them. Thought I did but It's not sustainable which has led to long wait times. My current work flow is a tightrope balance between works I owe and freelance contracts as I phase out commissions entirely. Never took on a lot in the past and now I have less time than ever (drawing takes a long time yo). I also had some really bad experiences in dealing with toxic/ abusive AF people which is why I pretty much stay away from the public as much as I can far as furry goes (which is unfair to a lot of people, granted).

I did start a Patreon that does indeed allow me do a few furry drawings a month that I can post in public but I haven't been posting the images publicly very often (think small dumps every few weeks). This is mainly because FA is cancer and because it's mostly adult work it is the only place I post it while not having a tumblr or twitter. I'm in no rush to return to public venues but if you're curious here is a sample of my furry work.

NSFW crops (non explicit)

I like clean lines, soft shading, and vivid colors. And due to popular demand I do lots and lots of porn.

I do plan on "returning" and indeed reposting all furry works on FA/ Tumblr/ Twitter but not now. Because I'm tired. And I would basically have to give up gaf to have time do it.

Cool, so you're an animator/video person I'm guessing? Those are some pretty expensive software. O_O

Posting on all the big art sites at once seems like a huge pain. I can see why you don't want to do it when you're an active professional already. But for a hobbyist/amateur, do you think it's worth it to setup profiles on the main sites? It might not make sense if you're just fooling around in GIMP, but if you were actually trying to become popular (for lack of a better term), going all out in terms of web presence seems like it would do the trick. Twitch seems like a good avenue as well.

I'm not an artist myself, but it seems all the bigger artists post to FA, twitter, and sometimes tumblr in lieu of FA. I can't imagine how much worse FA is for content creators. It seems like the site is always down for some reason when I visit.

Imgur has a funny technical difficulties screen.

I gave up on every checking Tumblr. It's an absolutely horrible site as a galley, and due to the way conversations work, it's also terrible as a blog. The site looks more like what Twitter would be if each tweet took up half the screen. I like FA over other sites because the barebones nature of the site means there's nothing in the way to actually check content. But even checking there annoying. Today I just check Pixiv due to their great mobile app, whatever pops up when I sometimes glance at Twitter, and whatever appears in the chat.

Nah... 2d freelancer. Mostly illustrator, designer, and comic inker/colorist. The stuff I mentioned I'm studying on the side is for my own hobbies outside of drawing with the ultimate ambition of being to create weekly or monthly mini visual novels/ motion comics for fun.

I encourage hobbyists/professionals/fans/everyone to use them all these sites though. My reluctance to use them are temporary and personal though the way FA is being run and how vulnerable to attack will always be a sore spot for me. I wrote down a long list of examples but at the end of the day it's due to a lack of professionalism. I get it. It's a niche interest and it (used to be) ran privately but the issues that it had would not be forgivable in other sites do I do not forgive it there.

Still. Gott make a big push on my backlog before I can hold my head up high though. Wanted to make a dent in it in the last few weeks but between the emergency evacuation, a murder that happened close to me, and a molar exploding my free time got jacked.

Neat, thanks for sharing. I checked out your books on google, females aren't really my type though. How do you get that "shiny/bright" look? It kinda reminds of me indie comics/doujinshi.

You mean professionalism on FA's part? I mean, there's not really any alternatives outside of tumblr/insta. I can't stand the ads on FA, but it's so much easier to find new work and comment on stuff. Tumblr wastes too much screen space and everything is spread out over a million different blogs. Instagram/twitter don't lend themselves well to having a static "home page" where you can put your details/commission info in an easy to find place. And FA actually has a functioning tag system. It's not perfect, but it seems to suit the majority of the communities' needs.

Hey Boss Doggie, someone in MagicGAF said you might like these. :)

Yeah I've been wondering about the optimal level of anthropomorphism for furry faces; I don't have an issue with the really humanized designs like these but a lot of furries do.

How much anthropomorphism is too much? Or perhaps how little is too little?

The first one works for me most because of the mouth cleft. Because of the fact that it's a cute character the soft definition works better than say... the second one. The face just looks really flat against the strong brow. I would have liked to see other stronger features in the face. The third one doesn't work for me at all.

Other than that I'm fine with the painted on fur look and everything else.

Neat, thanks for sharing. I checked out your books on google, females aren't really my type though. How do you get that "shiny/bright" look? It kinda reminds of me indie comics/doujinshi.

Indeed. And even though roughly 20% of the furry work I do is male only I don't do the bara stuff. Completely different aesthetic. I like the smoothe look look through and through. As for the the color stuff (and indeed I've done a ton of comic stuff including doujins/ compilation books sold at comiket) it's really simple. Take any drawing and punch it up with an air brush using puffs of primary colors in color dodge/ linear dodge/ linear add/ luminosity/ overlay layers. It's a post effect.

Wulfric

Yeah, it looks like painted/sprayed on fur. There doesn't seem to be much depth to the faces either. For the middle character, it looks like his muzzle doesn't protrude at all. They look like people wearing masks.
