I remember that dragon, isn't he from Morenatsu? He's the dad of the exhibitionistic dragon guy if I remember correctly.

I love Lingrimm because their characters got some bite to them, literally. All those huge teeth. I'm a fan of that sort of design choice. Makes them look a bit more ferocious and less cute and innocent. It stands out in the sheer quantity of cuteness. (Nothing against cute things but there's definitely a lack of Lingrimm's sort of style in the furry art community, Sturmschwinge being the only other artist that comes to mind that comes close to that)
Yeah I feel the same way. The innocent/cutesy stuff is just so boring to me. Like, take an artist like Falvie. Everybody knows Falvie. Their works are sophisticated in terms of technical skill. They are quite good at composition and shading. But basically every picture they've drawn is the same to me. There's like maybe three different facial expressions. It just doesn't elicit an emotional reaction. Porn art has a similar issue; while a lot of it certainly can elicit a reaction, it is not because it is necessarily good art. Tacklebox's tiger dude pictures are well drawn in addition to being suggestive, but a lot of porn/suggesstive art is pretty mediocre if not outright terrible. I think furries could do more to make more unique and challenging art.

For instance, one artist I really like is Ru. They don't draw that much furry stuff so I'm not sure I'd call them a furry artist but still.
I love their art. It is unique. I think it is cool. It is creepy and unsettling without trying too hard, in my opinion. Even in their earlier pictures where they weren't as skilled, there's still a lot of talent for making something that looks cool.

Yeah, there's a lot of artists that just stick with the things they are comfortable with, most of them do that in fact. Nothing wrong with that, but I am glad about the few that push themselves further and draw something really impressive (not just in terms of skill but "freshness", for the lack of a better word).

I like drawing #1, #4 and #9 a lot. Nice style.

Definitely.

Your nipple game is miles better now. 😸 Nice work on those.

Well, I think the thing is that most furry artwork isn't supposed to be challenging. The stuff you posted is occasionally pretty creepy, but it feels more at home in the pages of Hi-Fructose/ImagineFX or a legit hole in the wall gallery, not just dumped on Furaffinity.

Most people are just trying to get their rocks off, so in way it's easier for an artist to churn out as much as they can with simple backgrounds and colors to satisfy that desire. I think UnshackledFenrir/rrowdybeast has succeeded in this regard. He uses a lot of the same props (coffee cups, beds, cigars, piercings), but it's still just a muscle gut dude with a big package.

It's great, your proportions look a lot better and the lighting has improved. The beak is really nice. I know you like big muscles so I won't comment on that part. :)

So, Medium ("the TED Talks of blogging", loaded with Silicon Valley types but also a bunch of decent publications) does this thing where they have new homepage categories every day. Usually it's high-brow or current events stuff. Today, one of them is furries. And now I have two articles on Medium's homepage as a result. So that's nice.

so let's talk about clothes

like furry underwear

I mean most tend to go for "trousers with holes" or "tails over pants" (latter feels weird), but what about undies

since I'm more familiar with male underwear, you think they all wear jockstraps (something that accommodates tails due to how it works)?

Huh, I've never really thought about it. I think most furs would wear boxers with tail holes, mostly because that's what the artist is probably wearing. I don't think I've ever seen a jockstrap in the locker room except for a few old guys. Jockstraps are pretty constricting and your ass ends up clinging to the fabric of your pants. Super gross. They don't do anything that a pair of compression shorts won't do.

I always just figured tail-above-pants, assuming it's just kinda how they evolved when getting into the whole "these freakin' animals walk and talk" thing.

I've avoided having any characters wearing dresses, though, because I haven't decided how that would be handled.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Tail above pants seems uncomfortable.

Or maybe they all just wear really low-rise pants. I'm okay with that.

Just curl the tail around the butt like a cat.

I just assume that they'd have a half-circle cut out at the back of the top of their trousers with a strap that fastens with a button so that the tail will fit comfortably inbetween. All chairs would have to be either backless (think stools or locker room benches) or have enough space above the actual seat part for tails to fit through.

Anthros in dresses is a difficult one, though. I had one character a while ago that was drawn with a visible tail coming out of the back of the dress (though she was being viewed from the front) in one picture but it wasn't visible in the other because we couldn't decide how to handle it. Sitting down in a dress would be a problem because you'd crush your tail, but if there was a hole for the tail it would have to be very form-fitting. I think in my stories etc. I'll just avoid dresses altogether (they just flat-out don't exist in that universe) so I won't have to deal with this problem.

Like this, maybe, where the tail is right where the human tailbone ends. Just have a hole or lower pants/underwear.
Though that still doesn't solve the issue of where the tail goes when sitting down.
Like, Kass's tailfeathers really mess up the perspective here. Is he sitting on them, or what? Is he holding himself up with his arms? I can't tell what's going on with his ass.

You'd definitely need to have holes in the backs of chairs and in pants and stuff.

Ah, I didn't even think about dresses. I guess they have a hole cut in them, but that seems so weird to me. It's like a doggy diaper; it just looks unintentionally hilarious.

In a furry world, I think most seating would have a divot in the back to put your tail in. Or you can just wrap it around and rest it on the side of your leg/thigh. Open backed chairs work too.

Lol, I guess this is the reason artists don't draw characters from the back. >_<

Yeah, I agree. Maybe it's the furry equivalent of having the characters hold their hands behind their back so the artists don't have to draw hands. Just draw the character facing forward and you don't have to think about the tail/clothes mechanics...

I used to do that during live figure drawing sessions. I would sketch the whole body, but hands and feet would just be rectangular blocks. Kinda like 90s 3D fighting game characters with no fingers. xD

Also, having the character face the viewer creates more impact than from the back. Unless you're trying to do the Bloodborne pose tho

That's fine. I'm guilty of doing that too. And yeah, I agree. It's probably because the face is visible, and the character's expression often helps accentuate the tone of the picture. Though, pictures from the back can look good. Like if there's a character standing over another one they've been fighting that's on the ground, for instance.

Anything mini or even midi I'd assume the tail would just be under the fabric. Something like Yurine from Karas

http://i655.photobucket.com/albums/uu277/Kazhi22/Karas-Yurine1.jpg

For longer skirts, I'm not entirely sure. I've never had to draw it, and in fiction I just don't mention it.

Yeah. In past stories I'd describe that my character was wearing a dress, and her tail movement, but never really went into how it all worked. From what I can remember I think the tail was outside of the dress. She wore a ballgown.

Also, if the tail went under the fabric of a skirt, wouldn't the skirt get constantly lifted up by the tail movement? I guess it would be sort of constricting, too.

Well, the anime character is wearing leggings, so I guess that would cut down on accidental flashing :p

Or at least make said accidental flashing a hair more modest.

Demons are furries too, right?

You have summoned me.

There was some discussion about this earlier - while a lot of people like the more soft, cuddly anthros, I've always had more of an appreciation for the "cool," monstrous characters that are just badass as hell. Maybe it's partially because an artist tends to need more mechanical prowess to successfully pull off a "threatening" design, but I've always had a soft spot for things that are supposed to be imposing and bestial. All of my favorite works are those which feature great monster design:

Nosferatu Zodd - Kentaro Miura, Berserk

Elias Ainsworth - Kore Yamazaki, The Ancient Magus Bride

Pretty much every demon/beast enemy in the Soulsborne games has a fantastic design as well. You can't imagine how happy I was when I got to the DLC and got the ability to turn into this guy.

that is, expose your ass but hide your crotch

That could work. Lizard/dragon tails would also work with dresses and skirts in theory since gravity weighs them down so movement wouldn't really be an issue, but then there's still the sitting down problem to contend with.

Dude

The amount of time I've spent thinking about chairs

You have no idea

Real talk.

My character Mik wouldn't be able to do things like drive or take an airplane or sit in a theatre or fit into a bathroom stall and whatnot . Otter(ish) tails would not work in our vision of the world.

As for the pants/ undwear problem I envision a loop/hook/button on the waste band of any given article of clothing with a depression that goes under the tail. Any way I cut it the ergonomics are fucked. That's why in one particular rabbit character of mine I gave up and simply have her tail magically coming out of her cloak/ clothing. Same thing goes for the ears. Goes right through the cloaks hood.

Problem solved.

Obviously, furry planes would have different seating sections to accommodate different body types!

Yeah, this is partially the reason I love Castlevania; the design of the minotaurs/werewolves are very appealing to me. This is Cornell from Castlevania 64/Judgement:

Werewolves from Magic are pretty menacing too, compared to your standard furry fare.

I saw one picture a while ago that had a cloak hood feature straps that were button fastened to fit around ears like what we've talked about with trousers, only the strap's design made it look like it was just part of the normal hood shape.

Thinkin about drawing a fursona. Should I just choose my favorite animal?

Yup, that would be the perfect way to start. The fursona tends to change along with a person over the years, so don't be surprised if you make a dozen edits until you're satisfied. :)
