Fuse (Insomniac's Overstrike) Trailer - March 2013 [Update: GTTV Episode]

Disappointed in the art style shift.
peTTG.png

The original style in the CG trailer was stylized, but not too "cartoony". I think it could have had mass appeal, if that's what the concern was.

Just watched the trailer.

The new art style is indeed generic as hell.

Like people have said before its the anti borderlands. From super unique and charming to brown and yellow dullness. :(

Not sure which would be worse. They changed the art style due to EA and focus group BS or Insomniac changed it on there own. Both are depressing in different ways.

It's just sad. From ratchet and clank meets left 4 Dead to sci fi army of two

None of that was gameplay so I dont get the comparison.

I mean, an action trailer didn't have to be empty of humor. this trailer is simply bad, even if it has previous artstyle, with the way the current trailer is edited, I will still call it a bad trailer. and the Overstrike cg trailer can easily be made into a gameplay trailer, just a basic voice over introducing the characters while showing gameplay footage of said character using their unique weapon and abilities will add so much more to the trailer

Brute Force 2013. Not a fan of these types of trailers when all it shows is opposing military dudes getting blown up with various skills and weapons while heroes walk away from explosions in slow mo. Fire up Rockstar-like viddocs, like RDR, Insomniac. Show me why I need this shooter in a sea of shooters.

This game looks so generic that I'd expect it to be in the background of one of those Crime Procedural shows like Law & Order, Bones or CSI whenever they do the generic videogame moral panic episode.

You are much, much better than this dirge Insomniac.

The different art style isn't really a huge issue, the apparent change of tone is.

The Overstrike trailer was structured, detailed and immediately engaging as it was introducing four interesting characters with unique abilities.

The FUSE trailer was...SHOW AS MUCH SHOOTING AS POSSIBLE, WE WANT THAT DUDEBRO AUDIENCE!!!

I'm still interested in the game though, not willing to write it off because of a bad trailer.

I recall Ted Price saying that one of the biggest mistakes that a developer can make is deviating away from what they are truly good at--that which makes them a unique, well-loved developer to begin with--to try to capture other audiences.

I fear that this game may very well end up as such an example. :(

Watching the trailer for a second time with the sound off, and noticed two things:
1. Their expressionless faces while shooting are creepy.
2. FUSE logo reminds me a little too much of HAZE.

hehe.. well, so far for your elitist eyes.

well, only Insomniac rep can tell if it is a console footage or not but I bet it's not captured on consoles (it's in 1080p with crapton of AA, lol).

As for PC version I thought it was confirmed a long time ago.

I got halfway through the trailer before I started hating all of gaming too much to continue.
The original Overstrike trailer gave the impression that the game has a chance to maybe possibly stand out from the crowd at least a little bit. Such madness clearly had to be stopped.

Have to say it looks like it was designed by committee, at least the trailer. That doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing but I didn't find anything to look interesting except weaponry which will likely be good since Insomniac knows how to make fun stuff. If this wasn't an Insomniac game people would put it under the radar. I feel bad about saying this though because Insomniac is a great developer and I know it takes so much time and effort to make games.

People on forums love to whine and bitch about things that take months to implement, they don't realize it isn't as simple as they think to change things and what they think are small changes are really difficult for programmers/designers. If there's a big 'meh' feeling around gamers then it'll make Insomniac start sweating and think they'll have to make it different or stand out more which means delays. I'd like to see gameplay before judging it, I didn't like the trailer but trailers are made for specific audiences sometimes so it's not a big deal. People should wait for gameplay before going nuts over change in art style or character stuff and so on.

visited the official site.

Yeah, PC version is not confirmed. Might as well be WiiU exclusive for me then.

edit: omg, I see a turret section! Excited.

Yup =(

Game comes off better in GTTV, but it's way too slow. It's sticking too close to the Gears of War checklist, when games like Binary Domain, Vanquish, and even Army of Two 40th day have made things faster and better. Players who are used to faster experiences like Modern Warfare are going to feel like this game is playing in slow motion.

I think they are going for an MMO raid feel.

That trailer was hilarious. I'm glad they took the time to show off the dry wit that was being promised and set up the characters and their personalities. I also loved how colorful the environments were and it left me puzzled as to why those initial screenshots looked super generic.

I'm also really impressed by the use of Unreal engine here, I can't see any texture pop-in. Though some of those assets look stock UE3.

If this game was under Sony the original art style most likely would of been kept intact

I really wish people would stop blaming EA on this one, all you guys are doing is setting it up so that Insomniac can get some pity when this game bombs. This is a game published and distributed by EA via the partner program. It's the same program that Funcom used for The Secret World and Harmonix/MTV Games used for Rock Band. Any game-related decisions, good or bad, made about Partner Program titles falls on the developer. You want to blame EA for something? Blame them for not knowing how to market many of these partner program games.

lol @ geoff probing about a potential character death. I don't understand why people ask those kinds of questions do you want to be spoiled? Why put them on the spot like that. Doesn't make sense to me.

Gameplay looks like it'll be a lot of fun for people who are into co-op. I'm more into single player though so this isn't for me but it looks like it'll be a fun experience. Hopefully they can shake off the 'generic' stuff people are throwing around as far as forum dwelling gamers are concerned. I'm not sure how average gamestop mothers and casual people view these kinds of games though. I wonder which demographics are the most impulse buyers and which ones buy games based on how they look compared to others.

Like if a kid comes into a store with his parent is he going to look at this and say well it looks like a more explosive fun Gears? And then ask his parent to get it? I don't know if that goes on or if mostly hardcore people buy this stuff on amazon/newegg or something. I wonder how much of a role that plays in how you design these games and how much you change/implement from other popular games whether it's art style, XP count etc.

EA... taking developers soul's. one by one :)

This isn't really fair imo. I don't like EA but there's no reason to think they're controlling Insomniac or sticking their fingers in the design process or anything. It's entirely possible that Insomniac wants it's games to be played by more people and be commercially successful and they may make artistic/design compromises they feel are necessary to end up with that result.

I remember reading this was Bioware's justification for what Mass Effect became but I find them to be much more sinister. I get the impression people at the top there seem to loathe gamers and just want to make a successful business at the expense of everything else. I don't think people would/should ever think that of Insomniac at least not yet.

I dunno, but it was certainly weird to see Ted Price going on about how awesome is the violence in the game now. :P It'd be unfair to pretend what goes on inside Insomniac, but I'd wager this was a decision they made themselves, going by their history. They changed Resistance's sequel to try to cater to the more mass market FPS crowd.
True. It's hard to tell whether this is EA or Insomniac's own doing. I feel like Insomniac (Ted Price, more specifically, since he's the boss) is drunk chasing that elusive megahit; that flagship title everyone talks about. So they check all the boxes, they aim for that lowest common denominator, and just whatever it takes to appeal to the largest possible audience. It's a bad way to make games. It's a bad way to approach art. It's probably not an entirely bad way to make money though - I certainly don't doubt Ted Price's business acumen. But I feel like it fundamentally works against what they're trying to achieve.

So yeah, the more I think about it, the more likely I think Insomniac looked at Overstrike and said, "You know what, for our coming out party on the Xbox 360... we could probably use a little more Gears of War here and Call of Duty there. That's what sells."

Hah yeah dont get why you would want to know that anyway.

This game is looking like a mcuh better version of R2 co-op which was awesome.

I was one of the more optimistic people in the previous thread, but I'd be lying if I said I was impressed by what I saw on GTTV. It's Insomniac though so I'll still keep an eye out.

Yes.. gameplay sealed the no deal for me. Hope they sell enough though, don't want Imsomniac to end because of this.

i think that in the partner program EA gives you some "guidelines":

Free Radical's other project at this time was the last TimeSplitters game, Future Perfect. After TimeSplitters 2 EA had come sniffing around, and Free Radical was ready to listen. "EA Partners was this part of EA that was involved with third-party things," says Doak. "It was a bit like being groomed, you know. Here's all these friendly avuncular people that will give you all the love and attention you need to get your game out, and then after a while they go away and all the bad guys come around and it's like you're in borstal. Getting held down, beaten around the head with a cue ball in a sock."

"In retrospect, what happened after TimeSplitters 2 was that EA saw the Metacritic and came to us," says Ellis. "I don't actually think they'd looked at the game very much." The publisher demanded Future Perfect have a strong lead character in order that it appeal to the US market. "EA turned up with this stuff that was supposed to help us," says Doak. "And it was just big boards with pictures of Vin Diesel on them. Wesley Snipes was on one in his Blade outfit." Future Perfect ended up with Cortez, a cowardly and dumb marine whose catchphrase falls flat every time: "It's time to split.

its a metric driven game dictated by EAs market research.

you must be literally blind not seeing this....

So is this running on UE3? It kind of looks like a UE3 game, and it was demoed on a 360 in the Game Trailers episode.

Hells bells Insomnaic - you've really dropped the ball with this one. Had the Overstrike trailer never existed, I'd have let out a sigh and moved on upon seeing this new video, but realising how much the game has changed in its art style and tone, my heart has sunk. Fuse looks interchangeable from the slew of other action games released this gen. So bland, so generic, so bereft of the goofy charm that made that debut reveal such a winning delight.

I reserved judgement; I didn't base anything off of that single screenshot or the teaser. But now I've seen enough to know that this is a prime muck-up.

Explosions and dubstep. There certainly is a recipe here, and it seems like everyones a bit bored of the same meal.

Out in swollen at the seams March, with EA's sterling usual advertising support for EA Partners projects, and Bombatown's population will enjoy a new resident.
