Fuse (Insomniac's Overstrike) Trailer - March 2013 [Update: GTTV Episode]

I'm sure it'll be a solid game (insomniac never really make bad games), but I'm joining almost everyone here: it looks so bland. You had a nice NOLF vibe going on with the original style, why cater to the lowest common denomenator? Everyone else already does and Insomniac's better than that. Why won't quality of the game ever win to the prosect of more money? It's sad really.

Looked better in the gameplay footage on GTTV, but weapons aside I'd say it didn't show the uniqueness described in the hands-on impressions. You guys pretty much just showed a buncha shooting.

People were already crying that when Overstrike was revealed. Of course, this new direction doesn't help things.

Yeah I remember that trailer not being received fondly. Of course now everyone loves it! *cue Miyamoto Zeruda picture* Poor Insomniac.

The style leaves a lot to be desired (in other words, originality) but I'm a huge fan of the Resistance and Ratchet series' so I'll be watching this one. I really hope Insomniac finds a way to surprise me with the final product.

Just sat down and watched both the trailer and the entire GTTV episode.

Welp, I'm out.

Let me know when you guys make another mainline Ratchet & Clank game, Insomniac. I'll be there Day 1 for that.

Or if you guys are planning to revive Overstrike.

Looks like it was well received by most people

Yeah. There were some complaints, but most people (including myself) really liked the Incredibles/TF2-vibe the CG trailer gave off. The original video had a lot of "likes" as well.

Liking the humor and light hearted style. Main character looks like meathead Ted Price.

reminds me of borderlands....

I'm on board. Loved the style and humor of the trailer.....

sounds like someone doing a Nolan North Impression.... Cant tell if its him or not from the trailer.

Looks nice. Definitely has that classic Insomniac charm.

Characters

Crazy Weapons

thats an Insomniac game

MOAR!!!!!

Like an uber-violent Saturday morning cartoon meets The Incredibles. I think it looks pretty cool honestly.

That reminded me of the Incredibles for some reason. Looked awesome.

Same here.

Ditto probably the art style.

^
I love the art style.

It's quite obvious the team is really in love with the 'Incredibles'.

I'm amazed I'm the first one to point that out... Edit: That was quick!

Great visual style.

Love the character models and animation.

Do want. Great characterisation, visuals, sense of humour. Kinda like what PDZ should have been to an extent. I'm up for a bit of this :)

goodness me, that looks like so much fun from the trailer. Excellent. Love the style.

I kinda like the cartoonish character design. Hope to see some gameplay soon.

Wasn't overly optimisitic going into it but the trailer showed promise. There are glimmers of animation and humour that are quite reminiscent of TF2.

I just hope the game doesn't control like a reskinned R&C

I thought the same thing! Pretty cool trailer.

Anybody else get a "The Incredibles" vibe from it? I have no idea why, but I did.

Disappointed it's another shooter, but that was very much expected. At least it seems to have personality and the weapons should be unique because it's Insomniac. Mildly interested.

It feels like The Incredibles.

I would like to see in-game footage though.

reminded me of the incredibles meets TF2 :)

Looks great. I love the art style.

Reminds me of the incredibles, team work etc will keep an eye on it co-op could be fun

I like it a lot so far. The art style and tone reminds me of NOLF which can only be a good thing.

Now, Insomniac, I need 2 things:
- gameplay footage
- PC version

Cliches are entertaining with the right level of self-awareness.

Feels like Bulletstorm meets Incredibles or something. And the only reason I'm saying that is because Bulletstorm was good action and a less than bloody serious feel. Not many games like that around these days.

Taking a few cues from Team Fortress I see.
I'm in if there's a PC version.

Looks like a TF2 style game.

And EA: STOP USING TICK-TICK-BOOM IN YOUR FUCKING TRAILERS!!

I liked the style, I liked the humour, I liked the powers. I loved the overall vibe it gave off. Thumbs up Insomniac!

Female designs that aren't shitty? Wow.

I normally don't like shooter, but this looks like it is a lighthearted one with much humor. The comparisons to the Incredibles are accurate.I'd rather buy this game than Gears of War or Call of Duty, thanks.

Now this new video appears with the original artstyle gone, and the video gets a lot of dislikes.

Boo.

This could be the first Insomniac game since PS2 that I don't buy, that being said I'm not really into co-op and I think this game could be fun playing with friends as it seems designed from the ground up to take advantage of that and we know from R2 that they have some good experience in this area, with a 'generic' looking game like this a lot will rely on the feeling of the weapons and how the characters control in the environment for me, take gears for example, I actually find the franchise past the original fairly generic but they feel so good to play, very tight controls and good feeling weapons go a long way, and also good AI of course, so I'll be waiting for a demo/hands-on before I rule the game out completely.

If anyone from Insomniac is listening please make sure this weapons 'feel' good, so many games forget how important that is, simple things like good recoil with the combination of well timed strong vibration feed back for example makes a weapon feel weighty and fun to use, also give some weight to the weapons through the audio, it helps the player feel empowered and keeps those endorphins flowing.

Also noticeable. Trailer is ridiculously disturbing with comedic weapons being used on realistic people. If it was Overstrike, you could get away with it with a cloning side-plot, ridiculous team fortress style gibbing and physics and No One Lives Forever style dark humour. In this, it looks like you are committing war-crimes at a near constant rate with extremely painful weaponry. It's sadism for the sake of sadism.

So an overly sadistic, violent and disturbing, yet extraordinarily generic videogame. Who are these people and what have they done with Insomniac?

I liked the original art style much much better than the current one, but if its like R2 Co Op im gonna get it day one.

What Insomniac is generally known for is inventive weapon design, and that's exactly what you will get with Fuse. The signature weapons that each character has are of course important with their crazy abilities, but I also got to play around with a very fast-firing SMG and a few other doodads, and everything was very exciting to use and had that punch that many developers fail to recreate in their action games. In a first person shooter, the gun is the real star of the story, but when you go to a third person perspective like Insomniac is doing with Fuse, then the devs have to create a balance that properly shows both the character you're controlling and the actual gun you're carrying, making sure that both are visible enough and have enough feedback that you really feel like you're in control. It's not just texturing or modeling or animation, it also has a lot to do with basic game design and the kinds of action that the characters are involved in, and getting all of that right isn't nearly as easy as it might seem at first. From my small time spent playing Fuse, it seems like Insomniac has nailed that.

Fuse also started life as another game entirely, a four-player stealth based game, which according to president Ted Price, never worked at all

goddamnit! 4 player stealth game would be awesome. imagine peace walker 4 player co-op with Insomniac's crazy weapon design and gadget designed around stealth. :(

The AI is vital in this game. Realistically, most people will be playing this with one maybe two friends so the experience could be soured badly with poor pathfinding and lack of awareness.

Brute Force was a nightmare to play because of the constant switching to micro manage, hopefully you can play alongside AI that does not require baby sitting.
Agreed, but I am not worry about that really.

No thanks, the game looks awful. Seriously way too many browns and greys in that trailer.
Lots of different locations this is one, people have seen snow and forest environments.

James also said that each level has a different color palette.

I honestly don't believe that I've ever seen this much backlash result from a change in direction for a new IP (as opposed to such things occurring with overhauls for pre-established franchises). That said, though the gameplay looks interesting, I can agree that neither the new art direction nor the tonal shift are appealing. Won't write it off just yet.

They should have showed them off instead of the blandest environment ever created.

Lets look at the bright side: No one will bitch about R2 anymore!!!! XD

Since I've never owned a Sony console I haven't played a single Insomniac game, but the 2011 Overstrike trailer piqued my interest. As eXistor mentioned earlier, it had a NOLF vibe, which was a series I enjoyed years ago, and was looking forward to learning more about it.

It's impossible to tell how the game is going to turn out at this stage, but my interest has waned considerably after looking at the extreme makeover the game appears to have gone through. A lot of the style and attitude of the game seems to have been sucked out of it (assuming it was there in the first place; after all, we only saw a CGI trailer that a 3rd party created to hype up the game--who knows what the actual game looked liked or how it played). For now I'll consider myself neutral and will probably check back after release to see how things turned out.

What other examples are there of new IPs changing direction anyway (only recent one I can think of is Infamous 2)?

EDIT: Sorry, my brain just realized Infamous 2 isn't a new IP, disregard my example.

So far it looks generic as hell. I haven't seen anything that would make me want to play this but to be fair not much has been shown. Even the action from that boss fight looked boring with lots of characters just standing around holding the trigger down.

Oh, and the color on that shield is horrible.

I wish Insomniac would have been bought out by Sony... EA is going to run them into the ground...

Insomniac are independent, EA has not bought them, they are part of the EA partners. Insomnniac are free to make new games for whoever they want or just make them themselves and self publish on Steam/PSN/XBLA. They can't make more Spyro games (They have never owned the IP), they don't want to make any more Resistance games (Sony own the IP and always have), they continue to make R&C games for Sony (as Sony own the IP) and with EA they have also made the Facebook game Outernauts, which they own the IP for and could make spin off's/release games with that IP on other platforms, possibly under EA for a game or 2 depending on the deal they have.

I believe I read ages ago the deal with Fuse/Overstrike was that Insomniac own the IP but they must make a sequel with EA partners if the game does well/EA want a sequel. After that they can make any following sequels/spin off's using IP with whoever they want. I however can not find where I read this, may have been removed, as Insomniac can't say what deal they have in place, only that they get to keep the IP.

Nice visuals and effects, but it still is not doing anything for me. I just don't feel any real sense of character coming from it and it looks totally geared towards multiplayer, which I am sure will please many at least for a little while. Not looking like my thing at all, though.

I didn't see anything in all these trailers or gameplay videos that makes me want to not spend my money on Gears of War Judgement instead, or any of the other good-looking video games coming out next year.

What is the pull here? It's certainly not the interesting storyline. It's damn sure not the generic art direction. Is it the fact that it's a 4-player co-op shooter? Because that worked great for Syndicate.

I'm not seeing the appeal of this game. And I'm a shooter/Insomniac fan.

haha, I knew all of that stuff already!!! ahaha

I don't think it looks terrible, I just think it looks like...the definition of "average shooter". It's a game you rent on the weekend, have fun with it, return it and forget about it. Nothing about this game stands out. Nothing about this game looks to be exceptional.

Well it's good to have it there to inform people anyway ;) (The amount of people thinking Insomniac sold or ever owned Spyro or R&C annoys me)

Since you already knew all that I think saying EA will run them into the ground is a blatant over reaction. If Fuse does poorly they keep the IP and EA can not ask for the sequel, they will still be making money from R&C for Sony and possibly Outernauts (If it is profitable at the moment or near future) they have excellent propitiatory PS3 specfic and multiplatform (360/PS3/PC) tech/engines that they can use to make other games, and probably already have a team or 2 working on other games.

Insomniac prides itself on being independent and is a diversifying developer. Its for those very reasons that they will survive if Fuse fails.
