I've waited until the original author gave me permission to go forward with this...sooo....

Something Awful's forums have a related exension called "SA Last Read." With it, the browsing experience is enhanced through highlighting of threads you've posted in and/or read, displaying a color difference between posts read and unread, a popup window for replies that automatically redirect quotes to that window, block entire threads from the topic listing and more.

This project will be made BY GAF, FOR GAF

Screens here.

So here's the proposal--GAF users could benefit from a similar extension that would make the forums a little easier to read and navigate. You have the skills.

Could we make this happen?

For reference (and hopefully ease), the contents of the .xpi are inside the zip file below. Below that is a link to the original SA extension if you want to see it in action.

If you feel you can contribute to this community project and get the ball rolling on making a GAF Last Read, let me know. We could be heroes*.

Sample of SA extension, no work on GAF extension has been done yet.

*shit, that was corny

I only glanced at the .js files for a minute, but I see a lot about XML; is it wholly dependent on a RSS feed?

Also, I thought "go to first unread" was a function of vBulletin. You just replace "lastpost" with a different string in the URL, IIRC. It worked on the last version of GAF.

That I'm not positive of, but it sounds about right. I'll inquire a little bit further with the author about it.

Sound great, i'm all about visuals...i'm a visual person, charts, graphs and colors baby!! Anything to make GAF even better.

I have nothing in the way of skills to help this project move forward, but I know that everyone is waiting so here it is:

This has my full approval. Carry on!

The quick-reply window is nice, but the core of the rest is pretty much addressed in the user control panel we all have. (Maybe without all the fancy highlighting on the same page.)

Almost forgot my favorite feature. Don't like that new thread about that topic you hate? Right click, and that thread is GONE as far as you're concerned.

Can this be done with posters?

Sadly, nothing in the way of enhancing the ignore function is in SA's extension, so I'm not sure it'd be possible in GAF's re-engineered version.

Well, how about I just make an open offer to a mod of $100 to nuke Olimaro's account?

i do have a degree in butts, but honestly this look about as exciting as beating myself in the face with a hammer

Sweet, I could get rid of all those spider threads where I'm always tempted to look but know I'll just get some horrible image stuck in my head.

Without some documentation on how the existing system works, there is a metric assload of XUL components to go through and understand. There is no real coding to this, its all XUL and javascript - but without knowing what all the pieces are supposed to do, this will take more time than I can devote to it.

Working on getting documentation, hopefully he gets back to me soon. :)

All he really needs to describe up front are what are the entry points into the board processing code. What is getting the HTML for the board and parsing it. From there I can trace a good deal of the rest.

He's a little slow getting back, sorry guys. I'll keep you updated on exactly when he does reply. :)

Cool. With docs on how his system works I could do it all in a week or so. Without docs it would take forever.

Cool beans. He may take a while to reply, but here's hoping. :)
