THERE IS NO BLOOD ON YOUR MEAT UNLESS YOU BUTCHERED IT YOURSELF.

This is a super common myth, the red liquid is simply myoglobin and is perfectly fine. You don't need to wash it or anything else off and you shouldn't wash it because fucking germ theory.

Why the fuck would anyone wash meat? It's not a vegetable that came out of the ground, and presumably if you care about your health your'e about to cook the shit out of it. That shit is fine, washing it is just going to fuck with the flavor if anything.

I have never heard of people washing/rinsing meat before...

If the meat is stinky maybe you shouldn't be eating it. find a new butcher.

Well the overwhelming feedback in this thread has just reaffirmed what I'll be doing from now on. I fully welcome not having to wash meat in the future as I'm a lazy bastard, and anything I can do to make life easier is a-ok in my book :)

Glad others were able to benefit from this knowledge as well.

I know a bunch of people who rinse the meat with water before slapping it on the grill. I always ask myself why, as if a little bit of water helps anything, it's stupid. The same can be applied to washing your hands, just rinsing them with water does absolutely nothing...

EDIT: Did you think this was a chicken?

no my friend.
just explaining that my method isnt a splash hazard which is what all of the warnings against chicken washing refer to.

Uuuh I don't wash my meat, but I don't think it'll make any difference in terms of health. It will definitely ruin the flavour and texture if washed too hard, whatever that means.

If it smells bad, you should throw it away. Stench is caused by bacteria, and that's when you can tell the bacteria has contaminated it.

Yes and no. Dry aging is quite smelly but the bacteria that grows on it isn't harmful generally and is usually sought after because of the way it breaks down the fibers and helps create flavor.

sorry USDA but I'm gonna wash my meat. If at least it gets a quick dip into some cold water. I don't know what happened between my kitchen and the slaughterhouse, but I know there won't be any fecal anything on my stove..

If there is fecal matter on your steaks then I suggest you find a different butcher.

Dont wash you Meat. But I would lie if I said ive never done it, sometimes when I was younger I used water to unfrozen Meat faster but thats not a very good thing to do.

Nice to know that you have learned something with this thread, now dont let your family convince you of the contrary because they have washed it all their lives.

The only time I've ever washed a cut of meat was when I've dropped it on the floor. Completely pointless otherwise. More harm than good can come of it.

I wash chicken, out of that package they have that weird sliminess that I dont like. Same thing with fish.
Pat it dry with good quality paper towel. The towel won't stick and it won't be slimy. Chuck the towel in the bin.

I only do it with fish, or if I'm crumbing chicken.

Depends where I get it from.

If I get it from a place that has other meat beside it or if the hair on the chicken hasn't been fully removed, I will wash it.

- Not room temperature.

- Not room temperature.

- Doesn't say amount of time.

- One hour doesn't get you to room temperature.

It takes several hours to come to room temperature, much more than what all these chefs are claiming--that's what that page is saying.

Ahhhh ok I get it now, I confused myself. I guess I shouldn't use the term 'room temperature' for the ~30 minutes or so I leave my steaks out for, which obviously doesn't get them to room temperature. My bad.

Its just a preventative measure since I've seen news reports about the malpractice of supermarket meat departments, and larger scale slaughter houses. They often find small amounts of nasty, so if i see something slick and non fleshy when I grip the meat, I give it a nice dip until whatever was on the surface is gone. If this offends, get thee over it.(not you, other folks I mean.)

If I trust the butcher and saw him cut it and put it in wax paper in front of me, like the few times I've been fortunate enough to go to an actual butcher in my area and not a faceless meat department in a supermarket, then yeah I have no problems just throwing that into the fire until its well done and crispy.(honest troll) But otherwise I'm careful and I'm indifferent to the offense your meat gods feel.

did you really..want to discuss...the other thing?

OP had to know thats a clickbait title. Came in expecting a legendary thread about genital cleanliness, left weirded out at the thought that people wash meat.

It was too much to expect though, I suppose weekend GAF hasn't started yet.

Wash... meat?

I cook the meat. If bacteria manage to survive that hellish ordeal, then more power to them, they won. Survival of the fittest, yo.

Yeah, I never saw a point in washing meat and I've never done it.

I just cook it.

My wife always washes every thing and complains when she sees me handling meat.
I remind her of the recommended procedure and she makes a face.

Then she says a prayer before she eats it.

God no. Washing meat makes germs spread EVERYWHERE in your Kitchen. Especially from Chicken.

Properly cooking meat kills any germs that may be present.

lol where are you buying meat with shit on it? don't do that, that's a bad place to shop

You guys seem to have a lot of trust in the people that handle the food before it reaches the supermarket counter.

Me, I am not paranoid about it, but I know people get sloppy, I see that all the time in my day to day life, so I just rinse my meat before I cook them. Simple.

Rincing your meat does absolutely nothing good to it. If by any chance it's not good to eat for whatever reason splashing water onto it won't change anything.

Washing my sneakers does absolutely nothing good to it, but I wash it to get the dirt off. That's it.
