tbh I don't even know how or why people keep track of what got released in what specific year off the top of their head tbh

I don't, luckily people throughout the GBomb GOTY thread have been reminding me with other discussions. So for me, it's the best since Skyrim/Saints Row 3, so that's 2011.

To play fair I googled the release date of some of my favorite games from last gen. 2009had Demon's Souls, Bayonetta and Sin & Punishment. Holy shit that was a good one.

Edited and appended for my tastes. 2016 still looking good though I can see a handful of those ending up in 2017.

Flashless at the Golden Globes
1. Rise Of Tomb Raider; Absolutely gorgeous game with a thrilling campaign from start to finish. It is also not afraid to take its time with wide open areas with side missions and tombs that reward exploring. It's what Uncharted should be.
2. Metal Gear Solid 5 ; This should be my GOTY, but I cant give such a lazy MGS game GOTY. The story is an after thought. The gameplay never reaches the highs of Ground Zeroes, and Snake is a fucking mute. That said, the gameplay is probably the best I have ever played in a video game. But Tomb Raider has a better paced campaign and setpieces.
3. Bloodborne; My third souls game and the first one I ever beat. The visuals are finally stunning. The combat is finally responsive, and the level design is probably the best ever. it's still way too hard and the story is just fucking awful. Otherwise this would've been my GOTY.
4. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 ; Bungie's Destiny has three classes and 6 more sub classes. And yet through out its 15 months run they have had ridiculously Overpowered abilities. The point is Black Ops 3 introduced 9 classes and another 9 abilities and its not as broken as Destiny. This is the most balanced and well designed CoD ever. It's still CoD and the campaign is trash, but there isnt a better MP game out there
5. Batman Arkham Knight ; Gorgeous graphics and the best story in a video game this year. Sadly, the campaign is too reliant on Batmobile sections and the city is filled with quests that get boring after the first time.
6. Destiny The Taken King ; Not sure if this counts, but it's a brilliant expansion, and the King's Fall raid should win awards by itself. Amazing level design.
7. Star Wars Battlefront ; I have grown to like the game after some initial disappointment. The graphics are incredible, and there are a lot of modes here. There is a lot to like, but it doesnt exactly come together like it should. I am sure the sequel will be fantastic.

1. Stella Glow ; The surprise hit a really enjoyable SRPG like it more than Fire Emblem. It also has some persona mixed into it by forming bonds your allies become stronger. I also think the characters are well done and likable.
2. Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX ; Best song selection out of the miku games also like that it is easier then the diva games and miku looks cuter. I am addicted to the touch mechanic
3. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate ; I love all monster hunter games had so much fun with friends playing this in co op. The mechanics also feel refined love jumping on the monsters.
4. Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. ; If it wasn’t for Stella Glow this would have been my surprise hit another good SRPG. Kinda hold back by the art style and the long turns from enemies when I played it. An update helped it speed up but I played the game without it.
5. Yoshi's Woolly World ; Second best platformer on the Wii U right after New Super Mario Bros U. I love the adventuring and find everything pace of the Yoshi games and this is the best one since the SNES. I feel like I am not that happy with the art style as some other people do.
6. Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water ; The mechanic in this game using the Wii u pad as camera is so cool that it had to take a spot on my list. The atmosphere is also very nice.
7. Yo-Kai Watch ; The game is great but a bit flawed. But the experience is really fun and lighthearted. The RPG mechanic is also kinda new with the spin wheel. I prefer this to pokemon in anything but battle.
8. Yakuza 5 ; Not the best Yakuza game but still great game. Story and mini games are nice a really fun ride. Combat feels kinda dated these days so that its ranked a bit lower on my list.
9. Rodea the Sky Soldier ; Never expected a Wii game to be on my goty list in 2015 but this is a great swan song to the wii. Kind of a mix between games I loved as a kid. Namely Nights into Dreams and the Sonic games. It’s very unique, funny that the extra is better than the Wiiu/3ds version.
10. Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson ; Had so much fun in co op that I had to rank it in my list. I love street of rage kind of games and this offer all that plus some great fan service.

1. Splatoon; It's incredibly addictive. It is hands down the best multiplayer experience I've ever had and I'm 34. It is the reason why I own most of these GOTY games people are mentioning but have yet to play them. I honestly feel whoever doesn't have this game in their top 5 this year just hasn't played it.

I'll fill out the rest if I have time but I had to at least make sure I got Splatoon in there.

I haven't bought a lot of new games this year, but based on the ones I have:

1. Tales of Zestiria
clwFyT4.gif

By far this is the game I have spent the most time with this year. It's standard Tales fare, but it's fun to play, the characters are pretty good and an easy to follow story.

2. Final Fantasy VII
6H9tJGM.png

I've only put a couple hours in, but dammit, the man the feels rush right back. The game holds up well over the years....

3. Black Ops III
- Nice step up in quality from Advanced Warfare and really good quality overall

4. Final Fantasy Type-0 HD
- Was nice to finally play this storied Japanese game, even if it wasn't on Vita. The game Pl at was fun and the story unique, so it was well worth the purchase.

5. Omega Quintet
- Niche jrpg that is fun to play, has a unique cast of characters and interesting story.

2013 was the last really great year in gaming for me, the only year I actually came close to filling out a top ten list. I don't have faith in the 2016 list all releasing on time or living up to their hype.

1) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt ; CDPR created a world that's ridiculously easy to get lost in and offered a fantastic variety of quests with engaging characters. I also seem to be in the minority that quite enjoyed the combat. A fitting end (?) to the series.
2) Bloodborne ; The first Souls game I've really clicked with. The increased focus on offense in combat managed to pull me in and ensured the game sunk its teeth into me. The game's world was haunting and yet so much fun to explore.
3) Fallout 4 ; It is essentially just more Fallout, but Fallout 3 was arguably my favourite game of last gen so that certainly isn't a bad thing. It's not as much of a looker as the Witcher but it's still so much fun exploring the wasteland.
4) Journey ; I missed out it on it on PS3 but it's probably the most memorable experience of the year. It's hard to explain why it's so good but its probably best summarised by the fact you can be paired up with a random and never forget their name if you complete the game with them.
5) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain ; I was disappointed in the story but you won't find better stealth gameplay anywhere else. It looks great and it also contains the most hilarious line in a game this year.
6) Star Wars Battlefront ; The internet seems to hate it but it's the most fun I've had online this year. DICE did a great job in nailing the authenticity.
7) Batman Arkham Knight ; The Batmobile parts were awful but exploring Gotham was better than ever and I actually liked the story, despite the fact it was quite predictable.
8) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask ; It's a classic and having an updated version on the 3DS reminded me how good it really is.
9) Rocket League ; I haven't played it for a huge amount of time but it's a great fun with friends.
10) OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood ; I probably wouldn't have played this if it wasn't on PS+ but it was a lot more addictive than I expected, I liked the retro graphics and it's definitely the best skateboarding game this year.

Isn't this what people disappointed in 2014 said about 2015?

I just need like half of these to come out and be as good as I hope, and it'll be the best year since 2010, free

they can't delay UC4, Zelda, Deus Ex, XCOM 2, Ratchet & Clank, Hitman, Persona 5, FFXV, The Witness, Cuphead, AND TLG again can they

can they

2016 GOTY on most websites has already been decided. Just find the most critically acclaimed western AAA story-driven single player console game.

So either Uncharted 4 or Mass Effect(if that even comes out in 2016), basically.

This really seems to be bloodborne VS The Witcher III. I don't really have a good idea who is currently in the lead, but it will 100 % go between those two.

Sneaky list here, it's like you've got half that are pretty much set for release and another half that could vanish into 2017.

Tis the generation of delays, I wouldn't trust anything at this point, heck even what I assumed to be a content filler Starfox game got struck with a delay.

unless No Man's Sky is a massive shitshow, it's going to be GAF's Bloodborne of 2016.

I just can't see this happening on account that it's already pretty polarizing around these parts.

Mass Effect will most likely be Inquisition in space. It would be a shame, but you're probably right. Modern Bioware is incompetent.

Not even close.

1. Life is Strange ; This game affected me in so many ways throughout the year with each episode, that I feel it would be a disservice if it didn't win my personal Game of the Year vote. I can only hope that the sequel is just as good, because the story telling was damn near perfect.

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt ; Coming in at a close second.. I spent more time with this game than any other game this year, clocking in around 140 hours, which includes time with the expansion. That time will only go up next year with the next expansion, and I can't wait to jump back in.

3. Xenoblade Chronicles X ; I didn't have nearly as many complaints with the story as others did, and in fact, I thought it was really damn good. I loved the various twists it took throughout the 94 hours I spent with it, and can't wait to see where the story goes next, if they do a proper sequel.

4. Until Dawn ; I was instantly hooked from the moment I started the game with my girlfriend, and we ended up playing through it four times that week.. once just as we would normally play to see what happened.. and then three times to get various different scenarios and endings to see what changed. Well done.

5. Fallout 4 ; I didn't like this nearly as much as I hoped I was going to going in to it, but it still ranks high enough to round out my top five for this year. Another game I spent an insane amount of time with (right around 75 hours), I was able to grind out the platinum trophy, which left me very satisfied.

6. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel ; I've been waiting for this series to really take hold in the West, and with this game, I hope it becomes as successful as it deserves to be. I just pray that Falcom's games (including Tokyo Xanadu) start getting localized and released within a year or so of their Japanese debut.

7. Bloodborne ; Another game that I really enjoyed this year, and couldn't stop playing until it was over. I was never big on Dark Souls or Dark Souls II, but there was something about Bloodborne that just captivated me to continue.

8. Tales of Zestiria ; One of the better Tales games in recent memory in my opinion. I adore this series, and hope that it continues to improve, with an eventual graphical leap well overdue.

9. Super Mario Maker ; I will never need another 2D Mario game as far as I'm concerned. Let the Mario team focus on 3D games in the spirit of Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy, and I can get my 2D fix through various user created content and sponsored levels.

10. Yakuza 5 ; This series is finally making a comeback in the West, and I couldn't be more excited. Here's to hoping it continues with all future releases!

Honorable Mentions
x. Splatoon
x. Mad Max
x. Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below
x. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Not even close.
to be clear, i don't mean that NMS is going to be the game that everyone claims should be GOTY over something else. rather that it seems to have already attracted a pretty adamant fanbase that laments and chastizes others who 'don't get it'. the only way this won't happen will be for the game to actually be kind of bad.

1. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D ; One of the few major Zelda games I never had a chance to play, and damn is it easily my favorite.

2. Transformers Devastation ; I love Platinum Games, and I love Transformers. Why wouldn't I love them both together? It was fantastic.

3. Godzilla ; Of course it's a giant guilty pleasure, but damn do I love it. It's just tons of Godzilla fanservice shoved into a mediocre beat em up, and yet that's what I wanted.

4. Splatoon ; The first new Nintendo ip in a while that proves to be up to par with the greats. I can't help but think this game will spawn a franchise that will last for decades.

5. Yokai-Watch ; I love Pokémon, but this year was a good break from the game-a-year pattern. Yokai-Watch has done well to fill the Pokémon void in my life.

6. Super Mario Maker ; While I have not had a lot of time with this one yet, I adore it. Finally Nintendo can reach the creative niche reached by games like Minecraft while also keeping 2D Mario fresh.

7. IDARB ; The multiplayer is so fun. A great party game.

8. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition ; Never got to play this series until now, and boy was I missing out.

9. Bloodborne ; Never got to play a FROMSOFTWARE game until now, and boy was I missing out.

10. Until Dawn ; Probably one of the most original games I've seen this year.

It wasn't the greatest, but it was far better than 2012-2014.

I actually like 2012-2014 more than 2011. As a Nintendo/weeb game fan 2010-2011 were kinda eh, whereas 2012-2014 were consistently great. I think 2015 is honestly pretty weak as well, but I feel like there are enough games that I haven't played yet that it's tough for me to say.

1. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain ; Such an incredible game even in its unfinished state still more of a game than most, there are so many small beautiful things about this game that have been so meticulously added to it and it has so many great moments.
2. Undertale ; went in thinking this was going to be trash and loved the game. also replaying the game has meaningful changes which makes the replay actually tolerable.

Bloodborne this year is like the Last of Us from 2013. The creative leads(Druckmann/Straely & Miyazaki) create a new IP(BB/TLOU) after a disappointing follow-up by the "b-team"(UC3/DS2) to one of the GOTG contenders(UC2/Dark Souls). That passion came back full force and it just spreads into every thread like "wait the last of us didn't win????" vs this year's "Bloodborne was robbed" meme making them all terrible.

and now the "A-team" leads are coming back to the old franchise for their first current gen sequel, marketed as the final game in the series, clearly influenced by the popular spin-off in Uncharted 4 and Dark Souls 3

Damn, game of the year is gonna be tough.

If Uncharted 4 is the early favorite they ain't getting it easy. Street Fighter V and Overwatch are gonna probably be in heavy rotation.

Yeah 2015 was Nintendo's weakest year in awhile so I can understand that. Tbh I probably like 2015 more than 2011 too. 2010 was exceptional though.(Bayonetta, New Vegas, RDR, Vanquish, Mass Effect 2, Alan Wake, Super Mario Galaxy 2, etc.)

Hey, there's a game that's not on the nominated games list that I want to put my vote in for, it's called Thea: The Awakening. It released this year. Would that work out?

Not calling anyone out here, seeing how it's a fun popularity contest and everything, but I want to pull some of these completely unknown members to me aside and ask wtf they think they're doing. Some of these lists are obviously so fucking limited in what they've looked at this year that I just want to disqualify them based on a lack of perspective.

always the worst part of democracy, everyone's allowed to vote

Not everyone has the time or money to play a wide range of games and some of us (myself included) had a very small list because they felt other games weren't deserving of being mentioned.

I played a ton of games this year but only felt that three were worth nominating.

1. Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows ; Great excuse to revisit one of my favorite recent games. Great and unconventional platforming mechanics
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops III ; Mobility system adds a lot to the multiplayer aspect. Best iteration of this series yet IMO.
3. Splatoon ; Proved that Nintendo can make a great multiplayer shooter. Amazing music as well!
4. D4 ; Weird yet atmospheric adventure game from Swery!

I don't even think I played 10 games that came out this year...

I know I haven't, LOL, been playing a lot of games that I already owned. But of the one's that did come out this year:

1. DiRT Rally ; it's simply the best rally racing game ever made, I'll be playing this for many years to come
2. Cities Skylines ; this is the true Simcity 5. I've even uninstalled Simcity 4 for the first time in over a decade. Best city sim game ever.
3. Kerbal Space Program ; I had over 100 hours played while it was still in beta, and I still play it today. Fantastic NASA simulator, lol.
4. Heroes of the Storm ; the first MOBA that has really clicked with me, I find it incredibly fun to play.
5. Starcraft II LotV ; a new expansion for an old tired game, but I had fun with it

1. Bloodborne ; Far from my favorite souls game, it certainly does set itself apart from the rest of the series. From absolutely nailed the atmosphere here; imo, it's best in the series in that sense.

I never used a shield in the first place in Dark Souls, so the gameplay didn't feel like much of a novelty, but it's still great enough to be my GOTY.

2. Sunless Sea ; I heard about this game offhand a few times here, and I liked what I heard. So, I decided to pick it up.

A few hours into it, I'd run out of fuel and supplies on my way back to London. Ended up making a sacrifice to the gods, got stranded in a mysterious temple, began to eat my own crew and sacrificed a few for some fuel, managed to get as far as an island full of cannibals before getting eaten myself. All this happening in a very well executed C&C system with excellent writing backing it up. After that I played for another 75 hours or so, lost several more sea captains as I figured things out and I'm still finding tons of new content and new ways to do things. We need more games like this.

3. Thea: The Awakening ; Yet another game that came out of nowhere. I was a bit bored earlier this month and looked around the steam store to see what games released semi-recently. I saw this game, read that it was a 4x/RPG where you play as a god/goddess leading their people through a ruined world of magic and decided to drop $20 on it.

Then the game proceeded to charm me with its excellent multi-purpose combat system. It has turn based combat for perusasion challenges, for intelligence challenges etc. and different characters(of which you have a finite amount and it's not easy to get more after some inevitably die) had different specializations. On top of that, the game has great C&C in its quests and events with decent writing backing it up so it never feels like you're just playing a normal 4x. Highly suggested to anybody who likes both 4x games and RPGs.

4. Rocket League ; This game came out of literally nowhere. Got it free on PS+ along with some friends and we had a blast. Absolute best multiplayer game released this year and in many years. It manages to be both unique and extremely well executed. I happily bought all the DLC to show my support.

5. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter ; Has the great characters and dialogue of FC paired with a main character that has obviously matured and higher stakes/better pacing than FC. Great game.

6. Armello ; Another great multiplayer game. Playing this game with friends and making and breaking alliances constantly is great fun.

7. Galactic Civilizations III ; I love my 4X and this entry in Stardock's Gal Civ series is solid enough, even with some flaws. Making custom ships and civilizations is great fun.

8. The Age of Decadence ; In case I didn't make it clear already, I love Choice and Consquence in my RPGs, and none do it better than Age of Decadence. I had a ton of fun making character after character to see completely different stories each time I played. However, the game has awful presentation on all other fronts, which is why it lies at number 8 even though it does one thing extremely well.

9. Rebel Galaxy ; I love my space sims, especially when they have a single player as solid as Rebel Galaxy. Great fun, great soundtrack.

10. Fallout 4 ; In RPG terms, it's the worst Fallout to date. The voiced protagonist and railroaded backstory destroys any pretense that you are the character you're playing, only having 4 1-4 word choices in dialogue is garbage for C&C, and the lack of a skill system even further hampers C&C.

All that being said, game steps up the gameplay from 3 and NV and I had tons of fun creating settlements from scratch. So it manages to get number 10 on my list.
