haha, you know since I see this is brought up every now and then. I'm curious, has anybody truly met someone who hates rappers(Or artists in general) just because they blew up/went mainstream?
yeah my roommate is like this.
he'll come out and say "i hate _____ because too many people like him now."
like...not because they sold out, fell off or went in a different direction. but because too many people like them. thats just wack as fuck to me.
he's flipped on pretty much every rapper that's blown up in the last 2 years except for Drake.
OFWGKTA, Wiz, BoB, Cole, Yela, etc. probably ASAP Rocky by the time spring rolls around.
its funny because whenever he finds a new rapper...scratch that. whenever i tell him about a new rapper (the new rappers he finds end up being godawful) he'll go and tell anybody who'll listen to check that artist out.* but when they blow up he washes his hands of them. cant have your cake and eat it too.
what i dont get tho (and this is the kicker), is how your dream job is to be a host on a big rap radio station, but you hate the very same rappers you'll end up playing, as well as ending up hating the new acts you hype up. like...what?

*that actually annoys the fuck out of me if i'm being real. that's why i've stopped going out of my way to tell people about new music. like...at least give me credit when you run off and tell your friends instead of acting like you found it yourself. i dont mind if someone asks me "who is so and so" or "who made that song you just played" but i'm not just gonna be like "listen to this guy, he's next." you have to show me some interest first.
i guess that my own selfish quirk. my other roommate is better about it (and he doesnt flip if they get big) so i dont mind telling him about new rappers.
but personally i WANT the artists i find to blow up. i hope ASAP Rocky becomes one of the biggest rappers out. i'd be proud as shit for that dude and the fact that i was there from the start to see it all from when he was just a random dude on youtube.
i was happy OF got big. although i didnt appreciate people trying to hip me to OF after that breakthrough performance on Fallon, when months earlier they were just totally and completely disgusted by their lyrics when i tried to get them to listen.
you know? if KRIT gets big I'll think fondly about the time I saw him open for Wiz and I was one of the few people in the crowd that cared more about him than Wiz. actually, it depressed the fuck out of me that so few people cared, or even knew who KRIT was. i was ashamed for my hometown lol.
