producers of gaf, what software do you guys use to make music?

i had a little too much fun at guitar center messing with the akai XR20 and i kinda wanna buy something now. it was so much fun messing with that thing, even though i had no idea what i was doing. i figured it would be better to save the money learning a software first instead of buying tons of physical equipment.

on that note, do you guys know any resources online so i can learn what does what? my google fu sucks and i keep getting links to buy ebooks and shit. if i buy a MIDI controller pad, can i map certain sounds from whatever software i use onto each pad? sorry for the dumb questions but i dont know anything about music production. please dont laugh at me :(

Never felt a 'holiday' tape like DZA's. Man I wish he dropped this the week before christmas so I don't look like such a wierdo bumping it till new years.

I personally use Reason. The dude I make beats/songs with uses Logic Pro. There is also ableton. All are similar in essence, they just go about it different (differences in interface mostly). Everyone has their favorites, everyone will tell you to go with one over the other. I personally would say go with any of the three and prepare to have patience for a steep learning curve. Get a good pair of headphones and a MIDI keyboard controller at the same time. You can a decent M-Audio controller for 100 bucks or so. The software itself is the big expense, being 500 bucks give or take. As for resources, i found youtube to be very useful with tons of videos addressing my various issues.

i had no idea you produced, thats awesome :D do you have a soundcloud or something where i can check out your music?

seems like FL Studio is the cheapest of the big softwares. they all have free trials so ill try those out to see which one im more comfortable with. i dont mind shelling out extra money in that case, though id rather use the $2-300 on equipment or food

i have a keyboard that i use to learn piano on, and i think it can connect to my pc. can i use that as a MIDI controller? like can i map sounds onto the keys? or should i invest in something like the MPD18 or something? its like 82 bucks on amazon

The first 7 or so tracks are by the guy I produce with, everything after that is mine except for the last two tracks on page 5. These are mostly older stuff that I have no plans of actually using myself so I just threw up so anyone can use them if they want. Most of the stuff I've made in the last few months I am greedily hoarding.

I have used the thathatthat beat recently for this song Siddx - Definition

If the keyboard you have isn't too old, it should work with FL. If not, this is the kind of thin you need, this is what I have.
It's not perfect, the keys are a little too "sticky" and make rapid strokes difficult, but it works for what I need and is a great price.

i really like the thathatthat beat dude, its dope

my keyboard is an old hand me down and i would rather sell it and put the money towards something new and fresh

that m-audio looks awesome, but it looks like its mac only :( can i use it on windows 7 with any kind of tricks or something? or would you recommend something similar? would you also be able to use it without the computer, or does it work only when plugged into the pc?

damn nice, CRS! i still gotta find a record player since my old shit died, every thrift shop nearby has mad N64s and none of those.

Merry Christmas GAF-Hop

almost30_small.jpg

decided to bundle up a bunch of tracks I've written over the past couple years (and don't fit into an existing album) into one collection, titled "Almost 30". The only place you will find:

-chip tunes
-Ghost In The Shell
-old siddx posts
-the only decent version of Lift Off
-Radiohead
-NSFW raps
-Denis Dyack (wait what?)
-early submissions for the GAF Mixtape aka the Detox of NeoGAF

Enjoy.

i love it, a belated xmas gift right here. i need to go make a cover like this for myself now.

oh my bad, i read too fast. says there are also windows drivers available, which is great

this thing is almost bought :U

Yeah, and good luck! I've been mighty tempted to get into back into production myself. I've been writing/composing for a while now, and I'm figuring that it's about time to really get it done. My DAW IQ is such shit though.

There are plenty of Youtube training vids for each software or hardware. I use FLStudio, LogicPro and Music Generator for the PSone. I use a HORI arcade stick as the MIDI on FLStudio.

FL Studio with an mpd here. I tried learning abelton but was already a bit invested into FL. Same with Reason.

I went from FL to LogicPro myself, and haven't really used anything since. I also tried my hand at Reason, but ever got a grasp on it. As for equipment, all I own are the first gen Korg Nanopad and kontrol controllers. And my nanopad's been on the fritz so you could even cross that out, lol.

I'd like to try logic but I don't have a mac.
