What are the best abstract rap albums, outside of guys like Aesop Rock (obviously my favorite), Cannibal Ox, MF Doom, and the like? Obviously, abstract rap is going to be underground and only there, so I'm trying to figure out where I can find these albums. Most of them I'm sure slips through the cracks, because...you need a reason? As underground and obscure is fine with me. Just to be clear, I'm familiar with Anticon as a label, but yeah I still haven't delved into the discographies of those rappers.

People already mentioned some essentials (Deltron, Octagon.) I'll add Cities Aviv - Digital Lows. It's on bandcamp. It's like weird angry gritty industrial lo-fi cloud rap, but not so artsy it has its head up its ass.

Billy Woods - Warmachines

I'm getting that same epiphany I got with MF Doom all those years back. Damn near the whole song is quotable.

Missiles, close enough to see model and make
Haters gon' hate
Watch my city like The Blind Sheikh
Handle snakes at the wake
You could tell he went to hell just look at his face

scust.png

Looking like the one that got away
Survivor's guilt like runaway slave
Dad's coffin in the house for two days
Lenin lying in state
Grab the gats, had a fucking parade
Ticker tape on the graves

wow.png

Silent auction
His soul went unsold
Not for lack of trying
High horse road hard, metalless iron
Precious as blood from tyrants, built to spill
Instill men with the will to kill
Your last meal served cold, now it's really real

Time to check out this man's discography.
Right, right, right

I kind of put Billy in the same category of rappers like Roc Marciano and Ka. Newer rappers with that slow drip, leaky faucet, stream of consciousness rap style. Sometimes I won't realize how clever these guys are until I read the lyrics.

On TIWN though, Billy definitely has that old man speaking at the podium lyricism, reminds me of some the shit DOOM would say on Madvilliany.

One of my favorite tracks from Billy Woods, every verse is immaculate

These the beats they play for ghost detainees
Weeks with no sleep I’m living the dream
Crabs/hit em with the Old Bay Chesapeake
Steam
At high heat/repeat/red, gold and green
Marcus Garvey/crumbled fronta/Jamaican Rizla
Spanishtown/back to basics, the Spanish Prisoner
Kicking kitchen spanish looking like Sizzla
London Blitz airhorns
He spit that Stalin vs. Hitler

Staged shooting/Praise God they missed me
Unsolved mysteries/started from the upper middle
Closed the gap quickly
Sold soul to the devil replete with hidden fees
You fucking with a gypsy
White man handshake/twinkle in eye
You caught a bad break
Two half-truths but not one lie
The new guy got my spidey sense in overdrive
Dog, in the grand scheme I was just a cog
Lawyer said forget about getting off
It’s about damage control/ so hot he stop drop & roll
Yet the pack was sold before he copped
King of All Blacks/the new Pac

Nosy neighbors/Rear Window
Rodney Little played by Delroy Lindo
Memories fade like Memento
When someone threatening your kinfolk
Played out/ Super Nintendo
Shylock how he weighed out the super endo
Keep it 100 like loosies
Fishscale raw/ Bolivian sushi
Bargains driven harder than hoopties
Pillar of the community/Kente cloth on the kufi
Liberal white friend played by Donald Sutherland in the movie
Hit Cannes with tanned groupie
Palme d’Or!
Exuberant applause
But I still came back for my money like Mookie

So I recently got an record playing, looking to up my Vinyl collection. Are rap records good on vinyl? Or is it a waste of time since everything is digital?

MBDTF is dope on vinyl.

Im sure To Pimp a Butterfly sounds good, just wish it wasn't a trash album.

Islah is weighted more heavily towards the love songs, it's good because Gates is pretty much the only rapper than can rap about love, affection etc without getting boring.

This one for those lost in their feelings.

I love this part of Scales

You better have you a piece
Better have a college degree
You better move where they don't be sweet
Never gon be what you what it to be it is what it is
Brutis slid the shiv between Julius ribs
Two types of people in this world care
Those who loaded guns and those who dig
Rhetorical question, can I live?

Breh that might be my favorite off of Today I Wrote Nothing too, so densely packed, the imagery, the poetry dude is a great artist. He raps in like lyrical collages.

That comparison you made with Woods being like Cassavetes hip-hop stuck with me ever since and is all I can feel while listening to his stuff. Like a laid back montage of images with jazz riff editing.

The artist doesn't see a penny off these 90s albums

Eh, I guess so. IT was bought through an independent store though, so they will hopefully make a profit.

On another note, I listened to Drake's mixtape a little bit today......eh, it's alright. Legend is a great song, though.

Naw I don't buy that. Why sneak release somebody who doesn't garner attention like that?
As time goes on I feel like sudden releases vs. built up ones makes little difference. I'm guessing if TDE does it they're relying on the "surprise! he's not dead!" factor to carry the buzz.

Somebody like Rashad you just let it be like 3-4 weeks of some build up. Drop a single, artwork, track list, tour. He's not gonna sell a ton, but I think you gotta work to maximize it.
