people now discovering the greatness that is Monster
i guess it's never too late
The aura around Monster was something else. Fresh off a breakup to start the best run of his career and become the hottest in the game. Even had Drake catching the wave.

Very much doubt that. Also interested in where he takes his sound next.

It's a good thing because TDE's in house producers(Sounwave, Tae Beast, etc) are so good and Kendrick's friends with other greats(DJ Dahi, Flying Lotus etc)

It would be a cool throwback, but yeah there's no need for him to rely on past producers. TDE's in house producers are excellent anyway. The production on TPAB was just as good as the rapping, which is saying something. More Flying Lotus collaborations, please.

Heard he was a washed up crackhead.

I think he's still around. \

Yup. When I first heard Doom back around 03, I loved the beats but didn't really catch the rhymes and thought his flow was out there.

Then I really sat down with Operation Doomsday and it all fell in place.
I think the first time I heard a DOOM song was Meat Grinder and I didn't quite "get" his flow immediately.

I couldn't get into DOOM for years, then one night I said fuck it and played Operation Doomsday beginning to end, and my whole world changed. He's a great example of an "acquired taste."

This week, I arrived late to the party on two things.

First, I finally watched the film "Dope" on Netflix. I was sort of expecting a modern day House Party type of movie, but it turned out to be something completely different. From the opening scenes showing the kid's room filmed with '90s hip-hop shit, a Super Nintendo, etc., I was feeling it from the get-go, but it unexpectedly carried a lot of messages without coming off as too preachy. A$AP Rocky was surprisingly good in his role, and the other rappers in the movie like Tyga (lol) only had like ten seconds of screen time, so they couldn't hurt the movie. The only knock against it I have is Rocky's character dissing the Fresh Prince haha, but the main kid sort of defended him, saying Summertime was a classic.

The other thing is Anderson Paak's Malibu album. DAMN is this good as fuck; I wish I listened to it when it first came out, as it's a great summer album. It musically reminds me of The Roots/Soulquarians/D'Angelo, and the rap features are great. The Game has been on a hell of a roll lately, and his verse on "Room in Here" is a good one. It might be my favorite record this year.

He's been working with Alchemist, Metro, Southside, Mike Will, Quik, Dahi, Cardo, Zaytoven, and just about every other noteworthy producer. Lots of dope beats to ruin...

It's still my AOTY.

Doom isn't great and corny, but my favorite album of his is Take Me to Your Leader

Yeah, loved that, too. Mm.. Food my most fave, though.

I'm curious, as native speakers do his lyrics make sense or do they sound like random gibberish to you, too? To be fair, I listened to him when I was 14-16 and my English obviously wasn't as good yet. Still, the flow was fun to listen to even if I didn't understand anything. I'd say the beats probably played a big, if not the biggest, part, for me, though.

Really liked Malibu, too. Room in Here is bliss.

No Names is probably a top 10 DOOM track and whenever I listen to it I discover something different. Not necessarily a rarity for DOOM at all though.

He likes to use either some kind of really unique slang that I don't understand or he'll say a word but it sounds like a different word altogether.

They definitely make sense, but DOOM often times (I'll admit) strings bars together and doesn't try to always make his songs about a certain topic in the conventional sense (a song about a drug deal gone bad, a song about two stories that go from laughter to tears, etc.). I don't knock it against him though, sometimes you just want to hear some fantastic wordplay and fun as hell rhyme schemes.

I've calmed down a bit on Paak's album. I only have 2 or 3 songs saved. I've enjoyed him more on features this year. He's really good on Kaytranada's album and that new Mac Miller single.
Spot on, though it didn't have to cool for me, was never too hot on it.

If you want a truly good soul project check out Jamila's HEAVN and Kings We Are King if you haven't already

I remember him from a couple Jedi Mind Tricks songs. Wasn't too bad on those songs, I suppose. Still, always sad when a rapper dies, especially at their age.

Anyway, I listened to the new Chance the Rapper traveling across the state. I thought it was a very good album, and I enjoyed the increased melodicism and gospel influence. Skipped a few songs though, especially the second song. Probably give it a 7/10.

Not rap, but I'm listening to Woody Guthrie right now.

Out of all of the deaths that hit me, Eyedea still crushes me. He has very little material and there's no doubt that he could have improved since he was only 27 or so when he released his last album.

Now check out Noname (she had a feature on the Chance tape), it sounds similar, but less gospel-y. Really, really smooth.

Hey Gaf-hop, I need some recommendations. I'm normally a prog rock/metal kind of guy, but I had a lot of hip hop in my younger history. Went to a big hip-hop showcase of Milwaukee talent the other day and it was really rad so that has me exploring hip hop a lot more.

I've already checked out Kendrick Lamar, and I like most of To Pimp a Butterfly. Listened to Kanye and I absolutely loved My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy but thought Pablo was kind of trash and the rest of the stuff I listened to of him didn't really do much for me. I generally have liked Eminem throughout the years. Liked Dre and Jay-Z back in the day (and still do now).

I also tend to listen to a lot of new music, so what's good in 2016 specifically? I've checked out Chance the Rapper and that was pretty interesting. Alyssa Marie's "Louder than Words" was also pretty rad. Also thought Ugly Heroes "Everything in Between" was kinda cool.

Two songs I found that don't have albums yet but I'd really love to hear similar things because they blew me away: Sundance's "Cycles" and Apollo Brown/Skyzoo's "One in the Same"

Oh, I also tend to listen to albums as a whole and that's been the one thing I think that pushed me away from hip hop in general. I can't find whole albums that I like. There tends to be a few really weird/offputting tracks/skits/whatever that just sour me. Kendrick even has that problem with TPAB, and I know Eminem has that problem a lot with his stupid skits. So I guess any rappers that shy away from skits would be good but obviously if there's some great tracks there I can look past it.

Based on the music you posted, some albums from 2016 that you may like:

Kendrick Lamar - untitled unmastered
Oddisee - The Odd Tape
Elzhi - Lead Poison
Westside Gunn - Flygod
Noname - Telefone

you should probably listen to the .Paak album as well (Malibu) even if it's technically not rap because it's got the chillest vibes of the year.

You should listen to both Run The Jewels albums and classic Wu Tang albums (since my metal friends always gravitated towards these). The Wu Tang albums to start off with are Enter the 36 Chambers, Liquid Swords, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, and Ironman.

Sucks at poetry
Finally listened to Coloring Book. Couple songs are real standouts, the rest is... eh. Overall I like it, but a few tracks bring it down for me.

Blank Face is spectacular. But not really feeling that E-40 verse, and I like E-40.

Oh yeah, and Still Brazy was decent... if not a little cheesy at points. Why you always Hatin is great though haha

You would dig Edan's Beauty and the Beat. Think if a 60's psychedelic group made a rap album. They even sample On the Run on Torture Chamber, one of my favorite rap songs ever.
