GAF: how old are you and until when will you continue playing?

Also 34 like you OP.

I can see myself gaming when I'm older, I think it's actually a pretty good activity in order to avoid becoming mentally seline.

See, this might sound as hyperbole to many but... I wholeheartedly agree.

Everything that calms you, keeps you stable/sane after a hard/tough day is good in my books since it doesn't involve medicines/medication.

For me it was always music, games and riding, I always found magical the fact that - no matter how much of a shitty day I had - as soon as i sat on my chair, put my headphones on and started a game or listening to some music everything would go away almost in an instant, same as riding, i would put my jacket, boots, gloves and helmet on and I'd just take a ride as to clear my head...

Unfortunately, I don't ride anymore (but I do miss it G'dammit) so I'm only left with music and games which...i'll take it any day of the week over having no hobbies whatsoever like most people my age (where I live at least).
I'm 46 btw.

It's "medicine" for the mind and soul and no one will ever convince me otherwise.

Millenial here.

I don't plan on stopping. And, being a Millenial, I hope that neural interfaces are mass-market and not mind-controlly by the time my hands start failing so I can keep playing.

Weird question. Why not ask how long you'll watch TV, movies, sports or read books.

I'm 45. At 54, I'll stop and spend my time staring out the window waiting to die. Obviously.

39 this year, and I'll probably be gaming until I cant move these hands anymore. My wife certainly has given up the idea that I might stop gaming.

40, been going strong since I played an Atari 2600 and NES, doubt it'll slow down anytime soon. But there are moments of dry spells here and there, pretty standard as far as I can tell.

63. I win the oldest coot award. Although I fiddled around with videogames a little when I was younger (Intellivision as a kid, then the arcades in college), I didn't really get into videogames until I was about 40, with the PS1/2 and original Xbox.

I was more heavily into gaming back then. I'd play 4-6 hours a day sometimes, particularly with WRPGs. I don't do that anymore. I play about an hour a day, a few times a week. My interest in gaming has trailed off over the past 6 years, but it's still there.

I'm healthy now, but whether I'll still be gaming when I'm in my late 70s and feeble, who knows. I'll keep up with the hobby as long as my eyes, hands, and brain hold out.

Only 50+ say "fiddled"

38. Started on the NES and 8 inch floppy disks at 3 years old and will game till the day I die. You will have to grab the controller (if controllers still exist) out of my cold hands.

I've been playing for far too long. It would be madness to stop now. So I'll guess I'll keep playing until I die.

It makes me very happy to read the responses.

I have been playing since I was 4 or 5 years old.

I can't imagine a life without playing, it's my grounding cable, just like the gym or soccer. There is also a lot of negative connotation around the gaming world related to the fact that one spends more time on the PC or a console than being with friends or exercising. Like everything in life, it's about finding the right balance between everything.

Thank you GAF. You are the best Community out there.

this but unironically

This is why you buy a B0XX ladies and gentlemen

(how good are you in Melee, by the way?)
Not too bad, at least back in the day. I lived with M2K for like three years lol. These aging hands aren't doing me any favors, though. Probably couldn't handle spacies anymore 😩

39. Gaming is mainstream now partly due to our generation from the 80s- i see us all leading the wave as older gamers in the future. The gen before us/parents would never or even fathom gaming today, well its def not common. But it will be with us 30-40yr olds atm.

Ive def slowed down due to kids and such, my selection of games is far more picky, and so is the length of a game very important to me (less is more). I dont anticipate ever walking away unless gaming as we know it completely changes (like no more consoles or something)

25 and was on some self doubt about how much importance I give my games.

safe to say thread has helped me, be gaming til i die. currently only at like 1-2 hrs a day

My father was almost 80 when he passed away last year and even 3 days before he passed he was on Steam having just played They Are Billions and his last text to me was "Found any new games I should try?"

:messenger_heart:

My father also played videogames well into his 80s. He's 93 now. Body is fucked (as often it started with a fall on the ice), but his mind is sharp.

50 and I've been gaming since pong...no expectations to stop anytime soon. Lately I've been into darts quite a bit so don't game as much but I'm sure once a game comes that grabs me it'll consume all my time.

Dart is a game as well. (just have problems to call it "sport") :messenger_winking_tongue:

So GAF, that's it. How old are they and when do they plan to continue playing?

In my case, I am 34 and gaming is my favorite hobby. I plan to do it as long as I can. I imagine being an old man playing with the PC.

Also 34 like you OP.

I'm 34 as well. Just like any other hobby, I don't see myself being too old to go to the cinema or go fishing. Also, 34 is old? C'mon man.

Holy shit, 34 crew reunion?

I'm 34.

I will stop playing games the day I die.
I'm 33 you fucks.

I'm 45. I've been playing video games since 1982. I intend to keep playing as long as I am physically able to do so.

38 and been gaming for 32 of those years, my first game was Ecco the Dolphin, after beating that I was hooked on games ever since.

Outside of some sort of accident that removes my sight or hands I can't see myself stopping.

They have found that crosswords and the like can fend off dementia after you retire, so gaming will obviously help.

45 and until I die btw

54. Started with the Atari VCS (before it was the 2600). Primarily a Nintendo fanboy because they were the ones that brought me back from the crash of 83 during the holidays of 1987.

My "gaming" has declined significantly, and am "console agnostic."

EDIT: It's nice seeing other 5-decaders and older on here.

Turning 30 in a couple of weeks. My interest waxes and wanes depending on the releases and demands of work, but I've always spent at least most days of the week gaming in the evenings. I'm sure it'll be this way for the rest of my life; I take a lot of pleasure and comfort in this hobby.

I think some of my first memories are from 3-5 years old:
- Lode Runner on my grandparents Macintosh
- Going to my friends house to play Primal Rage, Aladdin, Lion King, etc. on the Sega Genesis
- Taking turns with cousins trying to beat Wizpig on Diddy Kong Racing for the N64
