Amateur Hour checking in! I discovered the awesomeness of f4 the last couple of weeks. Got a couple of tips that shooting wide open wasn't always the best and that lenses have an "optimal aperature" I wasn't aware of.

So here I like how all the bros are in focus in a way that f1.4 would never had given me.

Colston and Tenley's Birthday Party by Pieter, on Flickr

These horses were so loving to each other and really seemed to pose for me as I took pictures. I just wish I would have gotten the bottom of their legs in frame.

I'm under no illusion that this is a good shot, but boy was it yummy. The fixings were slim by the time I got to eat so I threw on two patties and a pile of mac and cheese!

The light was really severe for most of the party, but towards the end I got this lovely shot of a little girl, a huge piece of cake, and a pouty face that seemed to say, "I've had enough of this."

Unless you're shooting one person and are trying to achieve a nice blurred background look for a portrait you pretty much shouldn't be shooting wide open, especially at 1.4, even 1.8 is a hit or miss disaster at times, at least for me. I usually try to do group shops at like F5-8 usually depending on light available and how many people in the picture.

I checked out some twin peaks locations today.

More pics and videos from it on my instagram:

I started studying at a film school a couple months ago and one classmate asked one day when we were eating, that have I taken the pics that I have on Facebook. Said yes and he asked me, that have I taken any pics in this city. Told him that I don't have a camera, so he said he doesn't use his and asked if I want to borrow it. The random kindness of some people makes me happy.

The camera was Canon 7D with Canon EFS 18-135mm. Here are couple of pics I took:

From an improv competition for the theater students. Going to the dentist done in propaganda style was what they were doing IIRC.

If anyone has any money burning a hole in their pocket and wants to support a fellow GAF photographer, I just finished putting together a photobook from the Nepal Opera that I worked on. The opera was the first ever "western style" opera produced locally in Nepal, and I was lucky enough that they asked me to be involved as the photographer to help document it. I got a lot of behind the scenes stuff, but this book is strictly shots from the performances, which was absolutely beautiful, with the set made from locally sourced bamboo and put together by local craftsmen. It was also set outside in an ancient courtyard at Patan Durbar Square... really a unique kind of experience not just for me but for everyone involved and the people of Nepal. We even managed to raise quite a bit of money for earthquake relief efforts and reconstruction efforts, which are still ongoing.

I mentioned it and shared photos from it before ( and I can't access flickr to share photos again anyway), but you can see a preview of the smaller version of the book here: http://www.blurb.com/b/7412208-arjuna-s-dilemma

Or a larger, premium quality version here:
http://www.blurb.com/b/7412295-arjuna-s-dilemma-large-version

If you do buy it on or before Oct 18, use the code FAM40 to get a 40% discount.
If you'd like a PDF version I'll email you directly for $15 paypal bucks.

Thanks to everyone for always providing inspiration as well as criticism over the years. Appreciate you guys. I've got tons of more photos to share and for you all to rip apart if I ever get my VPN working again, or gtfo of China.

Is there an OT for photography basics? I have a Google Pixel on order and after seeing an album of samples taken with that phone's camera, I would like to be able to capture better images than I normally take. I need to learn about composition, lighting, etc. but nothing too fancy. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

There's this one from Reddit: http://www.r-photoclass.com/

You can also check out YouTube (like Mike Browne's channel) for great guides on composition

What's the optimal time to use grain in post? I have messed with it in lightroom and never achieved a result I thought worth keeping. Nothing ever looks old and cool, just bad. Are there specific situations where it's helpful?

Managed to upload a few from Seoul. All handheld double exposures in camera.

I've been shooting a short film over 8 days and to prep for it I needed to take a local model out and did some work with her. Here are some of the best shots...

The session was only an hour but I got a ton of good ones.

I think the first two aren't bad, her expression in the second one I really like for some reason. Third one watch the shadows and light, her nose is super bright and I think out of all 4 you posted her face looks worst here too. Not a fan of this shot. Last one isn't bad but also doesn't really do anything for me. Second one captures her character best I would guess.

The last one is the one I ended up using. It was for set decoration and I chose it because it was the least distracting and she seemed to look the oldest in that one. In that hour I fired off 133 shots over 4 locations. I also hate shooting in direct sun so I feel you when you say the 3rd one has the bright nose. I did do a print of the 2nd one as a backup.

I wasn't going to say anything until I actually checked out what you were using. The camera is fine and I agree with Vern that your second pic is the better pic. Someone will probably come down on me like a ton of bricks cause I'm recommending that you buy something, but look into something with a lower constant aperture, it makes a world of difference with portraiture. Sometimes what adds more character to a portrait is some nice bokeh in the background, which you aren't getting with what you're using. Maybe the depth of field is just a MFT thing and this isn't me saying you can't take portraits cause I checked your Flickr and you have nicer portraits of what I'm assuming is your son than of the model. I'm still trying to figure out why some of the backgrounds are that distracting...at least for me. I shot this at F8 and the background still isn't that much of a bother:

Believe it or not 133 shots across 4 locations isn't really that many. Depending on the location and how well me and the model click I can come out with 300 and more shots.

Bokeh is a result of distance to subject, focal length, and aperture. Using telephoto kit lenses will get you plenty of background blur without the need for the wide apertures. You don't need to spend money to get a narrower depth of field, just stand closer to your subject, that is why your shot at f8 has background blur.

Yeah I was pretty up close on that shot. I guess I'm just used to always being either at 2.8 or F4 just due to the lighting conditions I'm usually working in.

I like these the most. Third one looks like he's in some seedy porn bar with the red lighting. Second one looks like something I've shot a couple of times. Are you kneeling for one of the ones after these? Looks like it from that perspective.

I like the composition and processing of this one.

Yep if it looks like I'm squatting I'm probably squatting.

The red light place was a really dope bar. Had a big wall of old records and some little Korean dude spinning old Korean rock jams. Apparently Korea had a huge rock scene pre Kpop and all that crap. Little underground place my friends took me to.

Sounds pretty cool. Korea looks a lot less rustic than the areas of China and Malaysia you took pictures at...haven't seen a stray animal yet.

Lol Korea is modern dude. More advanced than USA. China actually is too in a a bunch of cities in a lot of ways, I just don't portray it as much I guess.

Dude you were like in 200 years in the past China. The fact the internet is clamped down over there it was like you hopped in a time machine. I didn't mind though. I'm always in NYC so it's nice seeing photography in a completely different setting.

People sure dress weird in NYC.

Hot dog dude looks cool though, did you get a whole series of him stuffing his face?
I can confirm that I took more than one pic, just only used one of the pics though. I think a lot of these are tourists for the most part...that one black dude I actually question the sanity of.
