GAF Photography Thread of 2017

I actually don't hate lighting gear, just hate packing that shit around, since I already knew I was going to have to walk through a busy park I opted to not bring any of it. I honestly do just prefer working with natural light, only thing is apparently it's unflattering.

While lights would have helped, that girl really isn't a model (at least in the traditional sense of the word/profession). The clothes she wore didn't really do much for her figure either.

I was in New York for the past week on a business trip. I was super busy and only lugged my camera around twice and really had no chance to shoot, but got a few decent snaps in. Didn't run into Jaded, despite our best efforts to hang out and take some pics. Instead I did my best impression of him:

This one could probably use a crop, too much space up top. I liked the GAP in the gap though, worked out well.

Also got a chance to shoot some models, though it wasn't really a photoshoot. I definitely didn't have any lights, but having professional/attractive models that know how to move and pose makes it easy to get decent pics, so I feel for you Jaded. You didn't have a lot to work with on your shoot.

We were there at a private showroom to purchase some gowns and I grabbed a few pictures while we negotiated and checked out the dresses. There are a few more pictures up on the flickr, the dresses were gorgeous!

As always feedback appreciated. And accidentally messed up the image titles and I'm about to board a plane so sorry for that lol.

The second one I think would look more interesting as a black and white, it's so monotone and drab in color that it's honestly not helping the picture itself. The look of B&W would mesh better with the harsh shadows. Last one is meh, should've got them away from the brick walls. Funny enough I didn't mind the shoot that much, but was severely astonished that the model that called for the shoot wasn't as good as her friend that sort of just tagged along. I had better synergy with her for some odd reason, was also better at posing. With the other one her face being...angular didn't help. She's not unattractive, just very...Dodecahedron like.

The second one I also did in BW, prefer it in color but BW I think is nice too, we had the same idea.

I wasn't posing the girls. Didn't have an option. Also there were 7 people out there and I wasn't there to take photos, so my own placement was limited too. Dem dresses 😍

She certainly has an unusual look - like you say, not ugly but certainly unconventional. I don't think her look works for her as a more traditional model but I think her face - and eyes - could be really something lit in just the right way. Tough with ambient light, but in the studio and a bit more relaxed I think you could maybe get something really interesting with her.

I'm just sitting here trying to force Xray vision.

I think she has very pretty eyes. Would be fine to get her in a studio and bounce a bunch of light off her and fixate on them.

Yep! Perhaps tighter on her face - or even superclose on just her eyes? Lots of light from the right angle/s to lift those deep areas of her face a bit and get her eyes lit up and I think you could get something really interesting from her.

I actually think I got some decent headshots of her...just marred by the deep shadows in her face...granted by editing don't help cause I always enhance the shadows and dark tone curve in lightroom.

iPhone 7+ shot plus "gritty" VSCO filter but badass nonetheless imo... it looked like I was driving towards the end of the world this morning lol. IIRC, I was like only a few minutes behind the storm.

Also this showed up in the mail:

Now to find a manual and figure out how to use this lol.

guys, how the hell do i remove power lines in photoshop cc 2017? i'm trying to remove the power lines obstructing my view of the sky. i've used the magic wand tool and edit>fill>content-aware but there's always a little bit of the wire left behind. it looks like i just selected the wire and turned down the opacity of it

edit: wound up just spot removing it in lightroom but i wanna learn how to do it in ps too

These are from before and after my shoot:

If you look at your original post, then the pictures work so well together as the man playing is standing in the picture below it too!

Just croppped it above. hope you don't mind to show my point.

I took these probably 5 minutes within each other and I'm pretty sure these two were in the same area as well. I don't think I have any pictures where they're in the same frame though.

You can use clone stamp in photoshop. Would work quite well with clouds as long as you don't repeat patterns.

will give that a shot when i get home. thanks!

next question:
i am getting seriously frustrated with the poor low-light performance of my Nikon D5200. It's hard for me to part with it because it's my first-ever camera, and I don't know if there's anything in the sub-$1000 price range that still suits my needs.

It's looking like my only option is to get a cheap mirrorless, but I'm worried about poor autofocus. Despite what the ad material says about mirrorless AF, everyone I've spoken to about mirrorless AF says it's not sufficient. Peeps are having troubles shooting toddlers without poor/delayed/inaccurate autofocus.

But I also want great video capabilities (4k isn't exactly necessary but it's nice to have). Low-light video capabilities are important, too.

tl;dr
Basically, I need something that will shoot a great-looking short film in low-light, but will also provide high-quality stills in all the big arenas (street, landscape, action, portraits, low-light). And it's gotta cost less than $1,000. I feel lost.

Much of Mirrorless AF gains have been very recent, the a6000 was one of the first to have PDAF at all IIRC, and the gains since then have been massive, so make sure that they've been speaking about newer cameras on that point. Mirrorless bodies also have some cool AF modes like EYE TRACKING and shit, which is always nifty.

I don't know if it's the camera or the lens, but anything with a pulse minus the person painting is soft focused. I look at the settings and they should be in focus, but it's not. There are a few pictures in here that I think really could be good if you made them pop a little bit in Lightroom or something.

I guess it might be the setting a bit (macro setting) and my camera and lens (Sony NEX-5R with E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS). I tend to take pics based on what I see and don't really do any touch up in post. I guess it might be time to start learning to use lightroom to make my pics more better than it's as of now.

I'm not sure if Sony did kit lens zooms well either, though taking pictures of far away things with the macro setting doesn't help either. Also you can add so much character to you shots by running them through lightroom.

In New Orleans this week. Stopped on my way back to the hotel last night to grab this with my Mavic.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuu that's fncking gorgeous!

I've seen your other drone shots on your IG and while I did love them as well, this is sorta on another level for me lol. But it's probably just coz I love NOLA haha.

I was there around this time last year for a startup convention called Collision and we were at that convention center you see on the left. At night, they had these pub crawls on Fulton St and I seriously had one of the best times of my life. My boss at that time knew a lot of the local creatives and it was fun talking shop with them, from chatting about cameras, to shooting techniques, and all that good stuff. I absorbed a lot, but unfortunately, I was also under the influence of alcohol so I don't remember much lolol.

Man I wish I could go back there. NOLA is truly a beautiful and inspiring city to be in... just being able to walk down a block and listen to some live jazz and see fantastic art is something I can't forget(at least when I was sober haha).

Nice photos everyone. I really need to take more photos...ugh.

I'm curious about the drone photo because I wanted to get a drone eventually, mainly for photos. How challenging is it to get the shots you want and post process? I'm up for a challenge but I'm weary of investing in tech I may bit clock with.

I'm not super sure of what you're asking. The post processing isn't any different than anything you'd do with traditional photography.

As far as getting the shots/composition, your head needs to be on a swivel to make sure you're not in the way of other air traffic, or birds, and things like that.

The downtown New Orleans shot came from my third purchased drone. They're a lot of fun to fly, and each drone I've purchased had a larger list of safety features to make them harder to crash.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
For ages, I've used Flickr as an inspirational destination of sorts for my own photography. I can search by camera and/or lens, or even by photographer. There's all sorts of tools to expand my knowledge and see how others view the world through a lens.

However, the app sucks. And I've come to realize I'm doing more and more of my casual browsing on my phone, and so I'd like to keep a similar connection to the photography world... but I'm not sure what other destinations are out there.

What do you all look at? Do you have a favorite site that you can view others' works?

Instagram is, like, the exact opposite of what I want, if you get what I'm saying...

Not quite sure what you mean. There's tons of fantastic pros on Instagram who post their shot data / equipment. But Flickr is still the go-to for serious photographers and hobbyists as far as I know.

I know 500px.com and deviantart.com are considered big communities. Adobe and some apps like VSCO are popular so they have started their own Sharing communities but that's more niche because they are subsets of specific editing apps.

But yeah, most photographers seem infatuated with either the super simple and super popular instagram, or the more presentation pushing Flickr.

Bought an Epson V850 a couple of weeks ago. It's a HUGE improvement over my old V500.

Here are a couple of scanned negatives.

Exposed on Kodak Portra 400 120 film

This next one is a pretty old negative. The day I shot it, it came out incredibly underexposed (I meant to push it, but I think I forgot to let the lab know). Anyways, my V500 just wasn't up to the task of giving me an acceptable scan, so I gave up on it.

Now that I upgraded my scanner, I thought I'd put it through the test of scanning what my previous scanner failed at. It actually turned out pretty good! Not exactly what I envisioned when shooting the portrait, but pretty nice.

So what really *is* 500px? A little bit of searching seems to indicate that it's kinda for "best of the best" sorts of photos, and what little I saw seem to indicate that theirs kicks the shit out of my photos, but maybe that's just the site obviously putting their best foot forward sort of thing.

500px is pretty much where the graphics designers with cameras pretty much hang out.

Getting packed and organised for the cycle race tomorrow and having a think about composition etc. so I've got some ideas to try when I get there. It occurred to me that I don't really move the focus point off the centre when I'm shooting sports and I wondered if anyone had any experience of doing that? A bit iffy about it, as I believe the D7100 AF sensitivity is best on the centre-point and the cluster immediately around that, but being able to compose with my subjects off-centre and still use the AF would give me some more options tomorrow. I know that cropping in PP is an option, but I prefer to try and get as close to the composition I want in-camera.

Anyone have any experience using off-centre focus points? Am I likely to see my keeper rate plummet if I use one of the less-sensitive areas?

Sorry for the off-topic question but...

My gf really wants to buy a camera for beginning photography but she doenst really know where to start.
Can somebody in here give a recommendation for a starter? Her budget is around €450/500,-

Thank you in advance.

Well the front page photos are way better than mine! Hahaha.
I don't think a person is even relevant on there unless their photoshopping in their own God rays and compositing in baby cows with babies or doing time lapses around light houses...or soft core porn.

Hey now, some of my photos could kinda sorta qualify for that last one there.

Hectic weekend and just catching up on processing my shots. Saturday was full-on - I turned up a couple of hours ahead of the race to get set up and scout out angles, spent an hour or so running around like an idiot up and down rock faces and hairpins to get my shots, then once the last competitor was past I pegged it down the hill and drove round to catch the riders as they headed around the coast to the finish line. Shot loads with my 70-300, 18-140 and a borrowed Tokina 11-16 and managed to get plenty of different angles. Not sure how successful I was, but I did get chatting to the team behind the event and I've got an open invite to upcoming events and they're interested in using a few shots, and I got approached by people on the day looking to buy photos. Really good experience, but because the race was just one lap there really was no room for error - if you missed a rider, you'd be bloody lucky to catch them again. Sun placement was a shit - high in the sky, at just the wrong angle etc. - but I tried to work with it as best as possible to get lots of colour and contrast and avoid the washed-out look as far as I could. Loads still to sort, but here are a few from the day:

The next day I took a run out to catch a Spitfire flypast/display at a local WWII festival. Spectacular weather and a great display, but the pilot ran his display pretty high and distant, so close shots were a struggle. I did manage to get a whole sequence of shots from his display though and I tried something a little different, assembling them into one composite image to show a couple of the manoeuvres in full. I think there around 20 images in all in this, and while I extended the sky to fill in gaps it's otherwise not been messed with. Not sure I managed to nail the form of the display properly so it might need tweaked a little, but it was a fun way to try and salvage something from the shoot.

...and an uncropped shot. Each photo in the composite image was this size, so the whole comp is enormous!

Nice shots hEIst. I like the style that seems to carry through each photo.

Nice job Cosmonaut! Really like that close up of the cyclist and the valley scene. Glad you enjoyed and made some good contacts!

Still trying out this portrait thing with like, actual people haha. My sister and her BF for that "prom" thing.

Any comments or critique is welcome
Yes I know he looks grumpy.

I will say, if I want to do this for money, I'm probably going to invest in the 85mm 1.8 FE, could use AF for not making everyone wait while I focus shit.
