I did my first 7 miles yesterday, but my nipple chafing problem can't be ignored any longer, they're sore as fuck.

Lots of runner have this problem, you can put a small bandage on your nipples, otherwise you might want to try different kind of running t shirt (made with different materials) to see if it can be solved that way.

Oddly enough I never got this problem until I ran a half a few months ago where my right neeple was bleeding heavily by the end, I'm still unsure of the exact reason as of today lol (it was raining and it wasn't the first time I was wearing the t shirt I wore back then)

Went to a shop today to buy a new pair of shoes and the clerk gasped at how flat my feet are. Jumped on the treadmill and my pronation was so severe it looked like my ankles were gonna snap. She said she's never seen flatter feet. Blew her mind when I told her I once ran a six minute mile wearing minimalist shoes (and of course I was in pain for a while thereafter). The current pair I'm wearing are an ASICS brand with no special insoles. They're four years old. With holes in them. And I run and hike in them still. Yeah, I'm a dummy.

Anyway, walked out with a pair of Brooks Ravenna 7 and some Superfeet insoles. The icing on the cake was that the Brooks rang up for 50% off, so I got em at a mere $54 or so! They are much better for my feet.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Any treadmill recommendations in here? Our current one is old as hell (the instruction manual talks about connecting a VCR to the unit) and is starting to die. We do not need anything fancy and are looking to spend no more than $700. We were looking at the ProForm 505 last night and it seemed alright, just wanted to reach out to you guys for any recommendations.

Thanks!

I just started week 6 of my c210k program and it was pretty rough - seems like I need to run as early as possible in the morning or else the humidity (85-90% typically) really gets to me. I should probably start carrying water with me as I suspect dehydration had a lot to do with it. Do you have any recommendations for lightweight water bottles? All the ones I have are pretty heavy/bulky.

You can get those ones designed for running, have you got one of those? It's like shaped to be gripped.

First half marathon tomorrow morning. Hope I keep a steady pace and don't get swept up in the moment at the start running faster than I should.

Nope, definitely don't - I just have regular water bottles for work and home. I'll check at REI when I head over there today. I feel like a dork carrying something like that for a 2 mile run, but I need it until I get used to running in this humidity :/

Well, I don't know about brands and such but I think the accepted wisdom regarding treadmills is that it should be dual motor with a belt motor of 2-3HP if it's for moderate to heavy use. I'd also consider a model that allows negative inclinations so that you can also do some downhill running training.

Also look at hydration packs and belts, just in case you find carrying something in your hand while running isn't your thing.

Good luck and have fun! :D

PR today with 7:32 for 10 miles in Chicago. That's 34sec/mile faster than last year. Nice, steady effort from start to finish. No issues.

Side note: Clif bloks are pretty great to handle compared to gel.

Did the Spring Lake 5 today. 5 mile race in Spring Lake, NJ. 41st year running. I ran like shit and felt like shit but I'm glad I did it. Honestly this felt harder than my first half marathon I did in Asbury last month. It didn't help that I laid off running for a month haha.

Good luck! You will settle into a rhythm. Don't overthink it or worry to much. It will work out and you'll have fun. Enjoy it.

I have a half marathon tonight at 6 PM - it's like 75% humidity here and will be almost 80 degrees so it's gonna be H O T! Curious to see how different it is running a race in the evening instead of morning...

I had that problem and did the whole bandaids thing for a while.

To rectify this issue, wear a tight shirt underneath that is polyester/spandex. After doing that I never had a problem.

The difference is that it's later in the day! :)

Good luck!

Thanks man! It went better than I could have imagined, my official time was 1:16:35 and i got first place! I was hoping to just get sub 1:20 so I'm thrilled! Unfortunately my Strava is about 0.2 miles short though :(

Anyone have any tips for getting over a foot stress fracture? I've had one since running boston. I took a good 3 weeks off but it's still bothering me. Anyone ever had one of these before?

Finished my first half marathon in 1:29:57 at 4'12"/km.

Just a bit quicker than I was expecting so pretty stoked.

Was damn cold this morning. Think it was around 8 degrees celsius

That's a very solid time. Off the top of my head, a 90 1/2 is probably closer to 4:16-4:17 than 4:12. But great job!

Well done on the win :) Checked the strava flyby, some other fast runners had 12.9s as well, but slower ones showed the 13.1 - I've seen this before with courses that have lots of intricate twists and turns and switchbacks, quicker runners record activities that get smoothed out a bit too much, not enough samples taken to show what you actually did. A local parkrun is the same, lots of faster runners show 2.9 and 3.0 miles, slower runners record the 3.1 - there's a repeated switchback and some winding/dodging turns that get straightened out by the time Strava displays them.

Just going off what the Nike+ app said for the per km.
The first part I started back a bit so the overall distance was 21.4 km might explain the difference but maybe not ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Awesome time man, especially for a first race! You should be stoked, enjoy it!

Thank you! I hadn't thought of that, but now thinking back about the course and how there were some weird twists and turns, I think this is exactly the case.

Man... 34°C... Went straight from miserable-cold-humid-winter to sunny-torridly-hot-summer. Thanks, Bavaria!

Time to re-post the GIF from last year :)

I went ahead and bought the small amphipod water bottle and it's working well so far. It's small enough that's it's not too much of a pain to carry in my hand and provides some relief from this awful humidity.

Up to 7:30 minutes of non-stop running today. Personal best.

Could have gone a bit more, but want to keep attainable goals.

Congrats!! Keep at it, it gets easier and easier. I couldn't do more than 8 minutes a few weeks ago and now I'm up to 20 minutes without walking. Looking forward to being able to do 30-35 at a time so I can start running some 5ks :)

Can't run today, stuck in airports and planes. Fitness leaking out of my body through all its orifices.

Just walk, walk the anxiety away. That's what I've been doing and according to my scientific knowledge the pressure differential generated by walking prevents aerobic capacity leakage by at least 80%.

I learned to run in place for these situations. Feels weird at first but it's very satisfying when you get the form down (highly vertical instead of leaning in, everything else stays the same including footstrikes).

Those first milestones feel amazing, keep going mate.

Intriguing. Do you happen to have a visual reference on hand? I'd be willing to give this a try. Also, what metric do you use to compare a run-in-place's effort to that of a normal run? HR seems like the most reasonable option, but I don't know if there's 1:1 equivalence.

Same form as normal running: ears above shoulders, arms at 90 degrees and not swinging past the center line, straight back, core tight and landing on the balls of the feet.

Differences: you're not leaning forward so it feels like 'braking' to experienced runners (bit of a mental block you have to get over) and you don't accelerate with weight shifting but rather by pumping your arms faster (try it, your feet will turn-over faster to maintain balance when you do it)

The step counter/heartrate monitor of my Fitbit seems to line up fine with a regular run so I just manually input my virtual distance/pace into Runtastic afterwards. I sometimes interval with other exercises (shadow boxing, air jump rope, low squat sprint etc.) in a random 'Fartlek' style, depending on the noises around me or the vehicles passing my view.

I'm not saying it's as good as running but it has it's uses and makes my body happy.

Haha, I know the feeling - do all them heel raises and core muscle tensing things - might plug up the leaks!

Are you off someplace less mad hot at least?
I'm going to singapore.... *cries* + *sweats*

Thanks for the suggestions you guys. But I think I'll just be lazy and sit on my ass (while still whining about not being able to run). I'll go out for a run after I make it to the hotel tomorrow. Forecast is 'only' 29°C.

I generally avoid treadmills but in humid, hot countries I do love those soft treads with built-in cool air fans that a lot of hotels have.

That's a great suggestion, had not thought of it. I'll still at least get one run in outside (want an asian GPS file :3 ), but a treadmill would make a lot of sense.

4 and 5 star hotels are required to have a complete and maintained fitness room to qualify for the rating (or offer access to same in partnership with a local club/spa), so you're usually good in those. When I was young and poor, I may slipped into such hotel facilities without a room key. ;)

Back on the saddle.

Running home from work 2x a week which is a decent little 12k I can do in a bit longer then walking and getting a bus.

Anyone have any recommendations for a running friendly backpack? Just want something I could toss my work clothes into.

The good ones are ridiculously expensive and the cheap ones aren't worth the hassle/chafing/bouncing/rattling. I've played around with half a dozen of those until I invested it in the Montane Dragon 20 which I've been using without complaint. I can also highly recommend the FlipBelt for smaller stuff like phones and keys.

I bought a similar waste band pack for my phone and keys and it was a great investment.

Mostly because I dont have to worry about pockets at all when shopping for running clothes anymore.

Oh and I signed up for my first Marathon! Its not until October but I am OK with that. I am not great in summer heat. Plus a few races from July onward leading up so I have a little race calendar now. That should be fun.

Some of my best memories of "regular" runs are runs after a 12h+ flight oversea. Forced mini-rests are a blessing in disguise.

You'll be well rested, go for an impromptu tempo or something.

Whoa, that thing looks awesome! I'm about to go on a trip to France and I was wondering how I was going to go for runs with just my armband when I need to carry a room key - I'll have to pick one up at REI.

Finally bought my Fenix 3 HR Sapphire at Best Buy after hearing about a $150.00 discount. Was debating between the 3HR and 5 for several months, but in the end the limited time discount made my decision that much easier.

Time to retire my old Vivoactive, you will be missed (;_;)

My buddy is such a beast. The guy is 5'10" and 175lbs, shredded. But clearly not skinny. Dude runs pretty often but never did track in high school. He's in his 30s now and on top of being able to randomly do shit like bench 225lbs for reps going years in between benching and being able to do 25-35 pull-ups, his running is ridiculous. I'm talking 4:50/minute mile recently, 18:00 5k, and I'm looking at his Runkeeper and one of his activities is a 9.02 mile for 58:30. That's an average pace of 6:29. His notes are like, "Was alright. Little chilly. Pretty hilly." :|

Anyone else know freak athletes like this? Humbles my fucking efforts so much. He's not even a competitive runner and yet he casually destroys that shit.

Sounds like a few of my coaches and co-runners on my running team. Since I'm still relatively new to athletics, they're trying their best to turn me into one of these machines.

Should be interesting if it ever happens lol.
