GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

El Pescado said:
My non-homebrewed v4.2 Wii just stared giving me a "Wii System Memory is Corrupt" error randomly when exiting from certain channels and games. Nintendo advised me to format the system memory, but I'd rather not lose my Animal Crossing or Brawl data. One forum I checked actually stated that this would not help me anyway.

I prefer to leave my system non-homebrewed, but Nintendo isn't giving me many options here. Is there a way to move these files without homebrewing or at least a way to revert my Wii back to a non-homebrewed state so Nintendo wouldn't be able to tell if I need to send it in for repairs at some point.
Edit: I just realised that I assume you have a Wii that can install BootMii as boot2. If you don't, then there is no way to do it unless somebody releases a version of Savegame Manager which doesn't require IOS249.

Hmm. Apparently BootMii now has an uninstall option. Hence, you could:

1. Use BannerBomb to install BootMii
2. Make a backup of your NAND
3. Install HBC (or just continue to use BannerBomb for the rest)
4. Install IOS249
5. Use Savegame Manager to get your saves off
6. Restore NAND
7. Use BannerBomb to delete BootMii.

The method for restoring those saves without leaving trace of homebrew is more complicated:

1. BannerBomb to use TBR Mod to install a patched IOS36 as IOS236 (see tutorial for IOS249)
2. BannerBomb to AnyTitle Deleter Mod to delete the IOS249 and IOS250 stubs
3. BannerBomb to install IOS249
4. BannerBomb to use Savegame Manager to get the saves on
5. BannerBomb to AnyTitle Deleter Mod to delete IOS236 and IOS250
6. BannerBomb to Wad Manager to install the IOS stubs over the IOS249 and IOS250 positions.

It definitely seems to downgrade to 4.0. I've run it twice now and my previously 4.1 Wii is now a 4.0 Wii. Weird...
Strange. I specifically I thought 4.0/4.1 was IOS60, which isn't updated, but I might be wrong.

SysMenu 4.0 and 4.1 definitely use IOS60.

Alright, just finished updating my cIOSes, HBC, my apps, Cfg USB Loader, my Cfg USB Loader forwarder channel, and now I'm backing up my NAND using Bootmii.

Then, I'll attempt to safe-update to 4.2, and install the new Preloader.
Wish me luck!

Bloody hell that was a pain-in-the-ass and a half!
Done.

Safely updated to SysMenu 4.2 without stubbing my cIOSes or borking my boot2.
Preloader (0.29 JODI patch version) FINALLY working again, with most of my favorite hacks.

The Safe 4.2 Updater took almost 30 minutes to work, and this on a fast wired connection.
Figuring out Preloader took me a goddamn hour. I got it installed, but properly fucking with IOS70 (SysMenu 4.2's new IOS) was a pain. And dangerous. Messing that up can kill your Wii. There were a couple of occasions where I had basically broken my Wii, in that Preloader was black-screening when trying to pull up the SysMenu. Thankfully, since I DID have the JODI patched version of Preloader running, I was able to auto-launch to the new HBC without issue. (Vanilla Preloader 0.29 cannot directly launch the new HBC!)

But... done. Finally.
I can't say it was all that worth it. But at least I'm at 4.2.

Hmm, some of the Preloader hacks for 4.2U up on Wiibrew.org are causing issues.
It seems like the remove nocopy protection from saves hack is preventing the SysMenu from loading. Also, it looks like the region free Wii channels hack causes the newest Narolez USB Cfg USB Loader forwarder channel to reboot back into the SysMenu, instead of the loader.

Disabling those brings things back to normal.

Nintendo hasn't beaten shit. 4.2 fell within 48 hours.
It's very possible to upgrade to 4.2 and get all of your homebrew up and running again.
Hell, even though no such system yet exists, even if they start releasing "virgin" 4.2 Wiis at retail, you'll be able to hack it like just about any other Wii.

Yep. Every single hack 'killed' by 4.2 is back. Bannerbomb, HBC, Bootmii and TBR are all working on new and old systems. I also coded a safe 4.2 updater that will upgrade everything except the stuff that has the potential to brick your Wii to remove the tiny bit of risk the official update has.

The tutorial has all the information.

So if I use that (I'm on 4.1) I'll keep everything, just using your updater?
Then what was all the pain in the ass stuff that Ilan was talking about?

Reading al of that I was just thinking of waiting for 4.3, maybe then it'll be easier, with the new hacks that will probably come with it.

I mean, I can't see updating to 4.2 as worth it atm, but it sucks that I can't access Wiishop (even though I rember there was some method to update just that, right?).

Update HBC to the latest version, then use the Safe 4.2 Updater and that should be all you need. If you just want the shop channel, that is also covered in the tutorial.

Ilan's troublesome stuff was Preloader. If you don't use it, you will have none of the problems he had.

Depends what you want to do with your Wii. USB Loaders are hardly the only apps that utilize custom IOSes. It can't hurt to have it, but you can always install it later if need be.

MoogPaul said:
do you need ISO249 to upgrade to 4.2 if you don't use a usb loader?
If you don't have IOS249 installed and you run the app and it fails after the IOSes have been updated but not the system menu, then you would have no way to rerun the app. You can also use TBR to install a patched version of IOS36 in the IOS236 or IOS249 slot to achieve the same effect if you like.

I only installed the homebrew channel inorder to play a PAL import of Another Code. If I uninstall the hb channel, can I safely turn on connect24 and upgrade to 4.2?

Honestly. Did you even read the thread title OR the announcement?

The official 4.2 updater isn't particularly safe regardless.
Whether your Wii is homebrewed or not, your chances of bricking due to the official 4.2 updater are basically identical.

Since you already have the HBC installed, I'd use it to launch Clipper's safe 4.2 updater, which doesn't include Nintendo's dodgy code.

I fucked up somewhere along the line, and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how to wipe out all traces of homebrew from my Wii without having it connected to the web (fucking York :lol)

It can't be done, even if you had access to the web. Uninstalling BootMii and doing a system format will remove a lot, but not all trace of it.

Can I use the same method listed in the tutorial to install homebrew channel on my JP Wii?
Yes.

This has probably been talked about to death, but I am lazy and it would be easier just to ask. Has the Metroid Prime Trilogy issue with USB Loaders been fixed yet? I can't seem to get it to work even with the alternate.dol method.

Anyone here not update to 4.2 yet? I was gonna do it earlier today but I might wait until newer firmware is out.

I'm yet to because I don't really need to. I'll do it eventually, but at the moment everything works fine so I don't really see the point. Hell, unless some game comes out (NSMB Wii probably) that requires it I'll no doubt hold off until until firmware 4.3 or whatever.

Lazy, really.

The farthest I ever saw the safe updater get before it failed was IOS57 so I have no idea how the downgrade took place. After trying over and over for about 90 minutes it finally completed successfully and now I'm on 4.2. I've never had that much trouble with an update before but my DSL has been a little unstable lately so that might have been the issue.

I got it to work but the game resets itself whenever I select a file in the menu. I tried messing with IOS 222/223 and alternate .dol but nothing works for me.

Edit: Ah I figured it out...I just don't like how I have to choose a different .dol to play each individual Metroid Prime game.

Is there an app that lets you copy Gamecube saves to SD? I want to copy my F-Zero GX save (which normally can't be moved) from my dodgy 3rd party memory card to my Nintendo memory card, and I have an app called Gamecube Saver that lets you copy a save over from your SD card , so I guess I just need a way to get my save onto the SD card. I suppose I could download a save from the internet but I'd rather use my own save.

Nugasa is for you, I can't use it because my memory cards are all first party...

Wow now you mention, better backup my F-Zero GX save in other memory card, I could got crazy if I lost that shit. :lol

Thx! I might be screwed though, I can't even get my Wii to recognize the card anymore :/

Never mind, just got it! Had to blow in it around 10 times.

NuGaSa isn't really working for me, presumably because it can't recognize the memory card. (Nothing happens when I press 1).
NVM, it worked!

I haven't cause my Wii isn't connected to the internet. 4.2 is pointless, so I'd just wait till a useful update comes out.

Gamecube Saver doesn't appear to work. The save file doesn't show up on my memory card. Has anyone successfully managed to copy an F-Zero GX save?

I haven't updated yet either (except for the shop) and I probably won't update until 4.3 as the only stuff that 4.2 seems to provide is slightly faster startup time and The Conduit online bug fixes. I don't own The Conduit, so I'll continue to stick around on 3.2 for now.

Also, it's that time again:

For all your homebrew and upgrading questions (including safely upgrading to 4.2), check this first:

Well, I've gone through that site and this thread, and I still can't seem to figure out what's going wrong when I attempt to set all this up. I followed the steps for the post-4.2 installation of HBC to the letter, and seemingly was able to install HBC correctly. However, when I went to exit the program, I was presented with the message: "Flushing log file... Unable to mount file system, could not flush log to SD". At this point the system is completely hung and I can't even use the remote any more. However, after turning the system off and on manually, everything seemed to be fine. I had a nice, shiny HBC waiting for me. So I install HBB according to the instructions and it keeps looping, claiming that it can't mount the SD card. I know that this card is readable, considering that that's what HBB loaded from in the first place, so what could be causing this problem? I even tried going back into that installer for HBC and uninstalling and reinstalling everything to see if that helps, to no avail. I had figured that I misread a couple of the steps for the installation...

Speaking of which, I could use some clarification on that. The instructions say to "Unzip HackMii Installer and copy boot.elf to the root directory of the SD card (sd:/)". Does that mean to unzip the whole zip to the SD card and just copy boot.elf back to the root, or am I just moving the one file from the zip to the SD card (on top of BannerBomb, of course).

Also, Once I've installed HBC the instructions say to remove or rename the private directory, which I did. However, they don't say what to do with the file(s) from the HackMii zip. Can/should I remove boot.elf from the SD card?

Oh, and one other piece of hopefully useful information. Once I hit the home button to get out of HBB's "attempting to mount" loop, I ended up back at the HBC main screen, but the HBB icon had vanished, as if I had no apps installed at all.

There's an issue with existing game cube memory card to SD copiers (like GCMM and NuGaSa) where official Nintendo memory cards will not work due to some issue in one of the libraries. I had to buy a third party card to backup my saves, but after doing so everything was fairly smooth sailing.

Edit: Blast. Just after sending the message, I realized the first party issue was already mentioned. Okay, at least I'll mention that I'm pretty sure that F-Zero GX is among the games whose saves I backed up.

I actually looked into it a little more and found out that F-Zero GX saves contain specific information about the memory card they were initially saved on, so if you copy them onto a different memory card they show up as corrupted data anyway. Apparently the only way to use them on a different memory card is to use a gamecube homebrew program called "save unlocker" which allows you to create an image of your memory card, but that program was illegal because it used the official SDK. Oh well, looks like I'll have to keep giving my crap 3rd party card blowjobs every time I want to play some F-Zero :(

Not all homebrew works with all SD media. Try copying everything off the card, reformatting, then copying the data back. If that doesn't work, you may need to get a different card.

I just added a ground rule to make this clearer. It means to only copy the specified files out of the zip/rar. The other files in the archive are not needed.

Also, Once I've installed HBC the instructions say to remove or rename the private directory, which I did. However, they don't say what to do with the file(s) from the HackMii zip. Can/should I remove boot.elf from the SD card?
It doesn't matter. By replacing the original private directory, or removing it, you are stopping BannerBomb. I guess you might as well delete the file to save space. What you shouldn't delete is the sd:/bootmii directory, which stores the files that BootMii runs at startup.

Oh, and one other piece of hopefully useful information. Once I hit the home button to get out of HBB's "attempting to mount" loop, I ended up back at the HBC main screen, but the HBB icon had vanished, as if I had no apps installed at all.
That seems to indicate that HBB is incompatible with the SD card and it needs to be reinitialised before it can be read again.

Yeah, I had already tried that one, too. This was the same card that I had in my digital camera so I figured on there was a chance that it needed to be freshly formatted. I've tried other apps that read from the SD card with that card, and while I can run the apps, they can't actually read from the card (a Kingston one). I found a SD compatibility list on WiiBrew.org, but it's not particularly helpful, seeing as they just list brand name and size, and there's occasions where the same brand name+size combination is listed as working and not working.

I didn't even install BootMii. Given that the installer couldn't write the log file to the SD card, I'm guessing I wouldn't have been able to anyway.

You need a clean memory card (preferable), and change the name of your save.

For example fzerogx.gci → aa.gci

"aa" file name always works for me, give a try, and only store just ONE *.cgi file in the codes folder :) (personally I´ve never tried with F-Zero GX)

I followed all the directions in the readme (the save was named a.gci), so I'm not sure why the save didn't even show up on the memory card. But it's irrelevent because the F-Zero save file contains the serial number of the card it was saved on, so it wouldn't work on a card with a different serial number.

That's the site that went down. I wouldn't go there right now, since whatever hacker is messing with them is likely to slip you a trojan.

Question. I'm updating everything at the moment, including Bootmii. Now I've never really known, but if I have the option to, is it preferable to install bootmii as a boot2? Apparently through all my hacks in the past I've installed bootmii as both an IOS AND a boot2. Shoudl I just update as a boot2 and uninstall it as an IOS?

It's fine to have Bootmii installed as both. If you plan on using both, update both.
Boot2 is the safest and preferred method, but installing it as an IOS will also allow you to launch it directly from the HBC. It's handy.

Every time I try to update the Shop Channel using WiiSCU it sends me back to the Homebrew Channel after a few minutes without finishing the update. :/

Edit: nevermind, successfully updatet the channel using NUS Downloader and WadImport. Guess my Wii doesn't like my internet connection.
