GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Dead Space Extraction has just became my favourite game ever to be played with USB Loader (Prime 3 in second place and Overkill in 3rd)!

What a friggin' awesome app, it just gives this game a much more cohesive experience so that the atmosphere (which plays a major part in what makes this game so good) it's never broken down by the otherwise (too) long disc-loading doors.

The game really benefits a lot from it, I mean the game (suprise!) is very good but with USB Loader it just gained a whole point in a 1 to 10 scale.

It's weird, I haven't updated my channel forwarder for USBLoader and yet it found the new HBC channel just fine. It's psychic.

You mean for the Home button functionality? And are we talking Cfg here?

Configurable USBLoader. But I thought it had to go through HBC?

I suppose it could just be looking for CfgUSB in the /apps/ folder.

Nah... it's psychic.

I am going to psychically make it start to fail. I just need you to change the name of your folder first...

And no, it does not need HBC. You could delete HBC and the forwarder would still work :D.

Yep, it's a hardcoded path

I think this is a very clean, well-contained topic with very few deviations from what Clipper and others are driving.

As I've said before, people ask redundant questions out of fear of bricking their machine, not because they're annoyingly inquisitive.

But I'll throw one out there that's not covered in the guide. If you wanted to eliminate nearly all user error from installing homebrew or the USB loader, what would be the ultimate goal? Like for example, could there be an all-in-one installer that does absolutely everything for you in one click?

That might sound like a dumb question, but if you're looking for a topic where everyone is on the same page, I think it might be the only way. Otherwise, doubt leads to fear, which leads to questions folks generally already know the answer to.

It'd be better if people came into the thread saying something like:

"OK I just want to make sure because this is the first time doing this but, to _____ on the Wii I just do ______ according to _____ page on the Wiki, right?"

I know I try to do that when I have my bonehead moments.

Nice title change.

It would be great, but there are a few reasons why it doesn't work:
  1. Not everybody wants everything (e.g., USB Loaders)
  2. All the different parts are frequently updating, making any sort of megapack obsolete very quickly (which is why I dislike the download this one file with everything in it tutorials)
  3. We don't have source for a lot of the stuff (e.g., Hackmii Installer, and source for it won't be released until the Wii is dead to hide the hacks from the pirates)
The starting page of the Wiki at least attempts to provide something simulating that. It asks you what you want to be able to do and then gives you the list of pages you need to follow. It's a lot more than one click, but you are guided through every click, at least.

Unless you're retarded like me where you're told to select something and you think it's busted because you didn't try left or right on the DPAD. :P

Heh. I'm pretty sure I actually changed the Wiki after you did that, actually.

I still say it's because all other homebrew before CfgUSBLoader (Wii, PSP, etc) I've used has had the entire menu on one screen and you press up and down to select. Not a "hidden" menu that requires you to press left and right to scroll through them.

Do they even tell you that you can press left or right to change how you want to install? I don't remember any of the installers mentioning it.

Nope. That's the other thing. Had it been ON THE SCREEN, I'd have figured it out. Shame on them!

I just want to mention that if you want a mp3 file that goes good with usb loader menu, try the one from Crystal Bearer's webpage. I think it fits rather nicely. :D

Clippy,

Following your guide but I encountered an error:

Trying to install IOS249 and I got to the part where after installing IOS15, you say to do this part again:

# Use Trucha Bug Restorer with IOS15 to install a patched IOS36 as IOS 249:

1. Choose IOS15 for IOS to reload.
2. Wait for the message to push 1 or Start to appear and do so.
3. Ensure the IOS at the top of the screen now states "IOS15 (Rev 257)"
4. Choose "IOS36 menu".
5. Change "Install IOS to slot" to be 249.
6. Leave the yes/no options at their default values (i.e., yes-yes-no)
7. Choose "Install patched IOS36".
8. If you are connected to the Internet, choose "Download IOS from NUS" with the D-Pad and Push A to select. If not, choose "Load IOS from sd card" with the D-Pad and push A to select. # When prompted, push A to start installation.
9. Press any button to exit when prompted.

When I select IOS15 for it to reload, at the top right of my screen it doesn't show IOS15 (Rev 257), it says IOS36 (Rev 3034).

Edit:

Nevermind, I tried it anyway and it says it was successful updating to IOS249. But strangely my backups of recent games still won't load. Waiting on an external hard drive still I suppose.

So you are using left/right to choose IOS15 and then push A, and then wait for the prompt to push 1 and then it shows up as IOS36 after that?

Did you look at the tutorial? We have WiiSCU and a second method there for when WiiSCU fails.
Yes, I did. Updating online using WiiSCU, etc. didn't work since my connection always seemed to drop out after a few minutes. I'm glad I'm getting a new internet connection in a few weeks since my Wii doesn't like the one I have at the moment at all.

Hi Clipper,

I am trying to get the USB Loader on to my 4.2U Wii using your tutorial and I've encountered a couple errors using ATDM. After running boot.dol from HBC, and selecting IOS236, i get Error! ISFS_Delete (ret= -102) and then ES_OpenContent (ret = -1017). It still proceeds past the error but the files I'm supposed to delete after that aren't there. Any ideas?

How did you update to 4.2?

Try moving on with the installation. If there's nothing in the IOS249/250 slots, then it should work. If it doesn't work, go back to the TBR Mod step and reinstall IOS236 while ensuring you choose to apply ES Identify (I think that's the term, it might be something similar). If that doesn't work, or you can't work out what I'm saying to do, then post again and I'll try to help further.

I used Safe Firmware Updater by Zektor for 4.2.

I am trying the process over again, but where would I choose to apply ES Identify on TBR Mod?

Did you install IOS249 before running the Safe Firmware Updater?

I have a feeling you didn't, but it doesn't really matter. Just move onto the 3.2 steps. The only reason why you need to delete those parts is if you did an official update. If you did install beforehand, there is no need to do it again.

Varshes said:
No, I didn't.

Alright, so should I use IOS236, 249 or 250 during the installation procedure?
236. You never installed 249 or 250 yet. I'll edit the tutorial for people that followed your upgrade path too (it never occurred to me before).

Okay cool, thanks. So I don't have to do the following step "Updating IOS249" then correct, just move on?

Yes, that section is only for updating IOS249 to a different version at a later stage.

Alright I have USB Loader installed as a channel and when I go to update it, it says an update is available and it downloads then it says it must restart the system but it never seems to actually update.

Any ideas?

For some odd reason you can never update a channel version through an update. All it does is update or install the latest version on your SD card for use through the Homebrew Channel. So in short you'll always have to get an updated WAD for USB Loader and install it that way.

Lame. I didn't read the tutorial because I already have Homebrew installed and have for a couple months now. I didn't imagine the answer to the question was in a tutorial. Thanks for the responses though.

If you use a channel forwarder instead of a full channel, you won't have to reinstall the channel to update the loader. There are also forwarder + full channels that will run the channel if it can't find the app on your SD / USB.

I personally prefer the channel forwarders as they take up less blocks and I always have my SD card in my Wii.

Can someone help me with getting Metroid Prime Trilogy to work in USBLoader? I know it's old hat and has been talked about much before, but I can't find a decent tutorial online for it. Figured you geniuses'd be able to help a brother out.

Just got the game, love it, but again, want it to be on my hard drive. I used Wiiscrubber to extra the three .dol files and I put it on the root of my SD card, but it still doesn't work, even after doing the renaming method (RE3MO1 or whatever it was). Just loads the game up, as well as the save files, and then boots to the system menu .

Am I putting the .dols in the wrong place on my SD card? What option for the "alternate .dol" section am I supposed to be picking? Does it even work in Configurable USBLoader, or do I have to boot into that dreadful USBLoader GX app? Any help would be great, and I'm sorry again for brining it up.

You can do the alternate .dol method WITHOUT extracting them from the ISO.
You can have Cfg USB Loader (and just about any other decent loader, I'd imagine) just pull the specified .dol straight from the disc image installed on the HDD.

That said, MPT is pretty broken off the HDD. You only have access to one save slot, only have access to one difficulty level, and can't access the multiplayer. It's easier just to run it off the disc. Hell, with some loaders I hear you're even stuck with 480i instead of 480p.

Yes Metroid Prime Trilogy is one of those annoying games to run off usbloaders. It took me a while to figure out that you could only load one save file for each game and to run each game you would have to select an alternative .dol. Better to run it off a disc and have everything accessible than run it off a hdd.

BrandNew, you didn't have to extract anything, and the answer is, not surprisingly, in the tutorial. The three numbered alternate .dols are your three games.

You do have the restriction that you can neither choose your save slot nor your difficulty.

To get 480p, set the "video_patch" option to "all" and the "video" option to "ntsc". Perhaps you should set something else if it's PAL. I guess I'll go find that out now with my own version.

Edit: It seems the PAL version works in 480p without the need for the patch_all option. Also, I forgot to mention that because it is a dual layer game, you should use Hermes' IOS (222/223) to install and play it.

My 360 recently got the RROD and as it's normally also my main DVD player (upconverting is awesome!), I'm searching for an alternative to play my DVDs. I've had Homebrew Channel on my Wii for a while now, just now decided to mess with trying to get DVDX to work.

I installed it using BootMii and it said it was successful. But when I try to load the DVD in Media Player CE, it tries mounting the DVD then just stops.

Any ideas?

To break from the monotony of the usual discussion it seems after nearly a year the homebrew shooting range game Smashing! has been updated:
http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Smashing!
I don't know what it looked like a year ago but it doesn't look half bad for a homebrew title.

Bootmii doesn't enable DVD playback. DVDX does. You need to install that (it's in the same installer, so just rerun the bootmii installer and select "Install DVDx" or whatever).

Then it should work. Don't expect any wonders though.
