GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Formatting to FAT is easy, so easy that I don't bother with the step-by-step and link to the tool. It's WBFS which has the long set of steps using GParted. Check again for the guiformat tool, which is really easy.

If it was months ago that you installed the IOSes, reinstall them. Follow the upgrade notes on the relevant tutorial pages.
Well, since my laser's already broken I might as well just stick with NTFS right? If I format the whole thing and just use that (do I need to format it?), can I still put other files on it?

In future versions, it'd be great if the loader could intelligently detect if your loader is run via autoboot methods or via the regular boot method, and thus decide on its own whether to log play times or not?

It does that already. If you try to start through an autoboot menu and you have asked to log play times, then it will warn you when starting a game that it can't log the time and gives you the choice to continue playing (without logs) or exit.

Any hope for a USB loader with GC compatibility sometime in the future? I remember there being talks of such possibility in the past, but I haven't really paid attention to what's happening with the scene.

I am not getting this message and it is not logging my time. I am booting through Wii menu and also have the latest release v52b2.dol and updated config.txt

aNy ideas?

Did you write following line into config.txt:
write_playlog = 1
(with no "option:" in front and no "[0]," behind the equation)? Works like a charm for me as well.

Yeah i saw my mistake, just a misspelling on my part (no "i" in write) . Thanks for making me double check that :D

Works great now

Seriously doubtful since GC BC is done with actual hardware and, as such, it turns off everything the Wii has that the GC doesn't (BT, the sensor bar, SD slot, USB ports, etc).

This might be a dumb question, but I installed Homebrew smoothly. Got TinyLoad to work, so I now have a reliable Region Free Wii.

I'm trying to install the Darkside Chronicles save to my JPN Wii, but the problem is that even though I put the Save File Extractor and Installers into the apps folder, the Homebrew Channel doesn't recognize them.

Right now I've got:

SD:/apps/Savegame_Installer_v2.0/Savegame_Installer_v2.0/save-installer_v2.0.elf

and

SD:/apps/Savegame_Installer_v2.0/Savegame_Installer_v2.0/save-installer_v2.0.dol

Homebrew doesn't bring them up to the menu, but it brings up TinyLoad. Am I doing something wrong or do I need anything else? Thanks to anyone who can help.

Don't all elf or dol files need to be renamed boot.elf or boot.dol?

Fuzzy said:

Just renamed them. Still not reading... I wonder if the file structure is out of whack.

EDIT: Okay, it finally began to read!

Now it just doesn't recognize them as valid Wii applications. Hmm. I really only need to do this once, so I can't wait to get this out of the way. :lol

Why do you have a folder inside a folder? Try SD:/apps/Savegame_Installer_v2.0/boot.elf

Fuzzy said:

That was the problem. The file was downloaded with the folder within a folder.

Thanks!

Now I just have to get the Wii to recognize that this is a legitimate Wii app. :lol

Could the problem be that you have both a elf and a dol file? Try having only one or the other in there.

SD:/apps/Savegame_Installer_v2.0/boot.dol

Edit:
Ho shit, thanks to Clipper for making me notice this:
manually rename the "nameoftheapp.do" in "boot.dol" and remember that if there's no xlm file and png then you'll just find a strage noname app with no icon on HBC, so it's easy to miss it if you have plenty others... just look for it ;)

Old .elf apps used to be created in the wrong manner and HBC refuses to recognise them any more. Use only the .dol file from the zip and rename it to boot.dol with a single subdirectory name under apps (as you have been doing). DO NOT rename the .elf as .dol, that won't work.

Another alternative is to try to use Savegame Manager instead. It's a much newer app and probably works a lot better than the old Extracter and Installer apps (which are dated in mid-2008)

Will installing just the Hombrew Channel and HackMii (and the three things installed with, DVDx and ?, ?) interfere with ordinary system updates and game updates? Or do I need to uninstall these things first or go through a special procedure to do that?

They won't interfere with system updates. However, system updates will at least attempt to interfere with them. The most recent update deleted all three from the system.

LOL, yeah what I wanted to write was "rename the name.dol" in boot.dol".
I edited my post, thanks for making me notice :)

Hey GAF, please help me!

I got my Wii in Japan a couple of years ago and at the time I only played JP released games. Then, before i moved back to America, I bought LoZ:TP to softmod the wii and change my region settings so I could play North American and Japanese games. Everything was working well, I was able to switch back and forth between the regions with relative ease. Then I got Wii Sports Resort, which auto-updated my system. Now, I cannot change my region settings back and forth between JP and NA. I am stuck in NA mode?, and since my copy of TP is JP, is there any way to update my homebrew channel so I can go back to JP because my SMG is in JP and I really want to replay it.

I'm not sure what my firmware and homebrew editions are, if needed, I can post that info.

Does installing hermes 222/223 ios as with the guide's instructions actually overwrite the previous 249 ios? Like, setting the USB Loader with Fat32 and using hermes ios, then reverting to WBFS, would that require reinstalling ios 249 or will it still be there and all I need to do is change it in the Loader settings?

Switching regions is no longer safe nor easy. However, if all you want to do is play games from other regions, there are MUCH better ways to do it than switching the region of the console around. Take a look at the Wiki's Region Free page.

No, it is an alternative to IOS249 and you can still use IOS249 after installing it. So yes, reverting just requires you to change your ios and partition settings.

Okay, just updated to the latest version of the loader. Thought I'd load up Brawl since there's some new Texture Hacks I've been meaning to try out in ages. But when I tell it to load I get something about an invalid EHC Module ??? and that it needs a new dol file, something like that. I can change to IOS 250, but I get "disc-read" errors and doing some of the other IOSes give me a WFTS error of some kind. It's been a good few months since I've done any kind of real updating (looking at the wiki for upgrading now). Is that it? Or is this something else?

Crisis averted! You may want to add that to your FAQ Clipper, though I'm probably one of the only people who were so badly out of date by now. Updated to Rev 17 just fine. I'll update Hermes IOS later. Turns out I haven't updated my IOS since last July if my SD Card is accurate :lol Though I was reading about the dol method to run games like MPT, and the the "old way" was obsolete. Does this mean there's now "proper" support for the game now without the weird "Save File 1 only side effects?

The EHC Module error means you need to upgrade IOS222 to v4.

Check the dates again. The old way was made obsolete before MPT launched :P.

One thing I can suggest is that Brawl cheat files tend to be too big for the loaders and you might want to delete some of the cheats in there you aren't going to use first.

There are codes that enable you to use arbitratily large cheat files for brawl, look around on the forums at smashboards.com and check their wiki too, they've got all the brawl-customization stuff very well documented.

So managed to get my wii working yet again, redid everything from beginning using the wiki. Played few hours of no more heros 2 from my usb drive. Turned on wii today, no signal doesn't even display bootmii. Disc tray flashes blue and thats all. Does this mean something? Any idea on how to fix it? Thinking maybe my wii has some hardware problem due to fact it keeps corrupting the nand completely forcing me to restore every few weeks. But hoping it something else and someone might know.

Edit- Tray only flashes when I have sd card inserted for bootmii. Is this some kinda error code? No sd card tray just stays dark as well as screen.

Edit- Well ignore this, i read somewhere that blinking might be a prob w/ bootmii reading from sd card..... so i blew in the sd card slot and now it works again, like having my nes all over again.

That happyness was short lived. Now the homebrew channel is being displayed upside down, which the site says means I've installed a shady ios. I've installed absolutely nothing in the past week while playing no more heros 2. Only things I've ever installed are from the wiki, how is this all possible? Is there a way to check all my ios and get them back to all original versions?

I really don't know how that is possible, unless you made a mistake during installation of TBR...

To fix, run HBC, and push either 1 or Home (I can't remember off the top of my head). On one or the other screen it will tell you which IOS the HBC is using. Then get Dop-IOS Mod and install the latest version of that IOS without any sort of patches.

Also, please post which IOS HBC was running from so I can figure out which step might have caused this.

Well, I'm actually at the end process of redoing everything over from my 3.2u nand backup. Last time it worked fine after doing everything in your tutorial, it all started happening after playing nmh2 few times and resetting the wii. Will see if its still happening after redoing everything in a little bit.

edit- One more thing, the backup I have of 3.2u that I'm using is all sorts of fucked up with me installing so many random things messing around before anything standard got made. I update to 4.2 using offical nintendo updater, that should clean out all the patched ios I would have install and stuff right?

edit 2 - homebrew chan 1.0.6 ios61v21.29. Everything is normal again not upside down.

Ah good, this makes a LOT more sense. Yes, other random things would definitely have done this to your Wii a long time ago. The HBC only started turning upside-down as an anti-piracy joke late last year. When you updated the HBC, it detected the stuff you had done before the tutorial and turned upside-down. Yes, the official update would correct the issues, but so would the safe update, which would have been very slightly safer.

well really weird thing is, I ran official updater before last time too, then it turned upside down with me installing any ios

Let me just start off by saying I looked through the homebrew tutorial but I cannot find what I need. Anyways, I got my copy of Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom from Amazon today and it wants me to update my wii, and I'm still on 3.2U. I was reading up on the "Upgrade to 4.2 Safely" page and going through the list of things to install when I got to IOS249 I hit a bump. On the page it shows how to from "3.3 through 4.1" and then some 4.2 stuff, but since I'm still on 3.2U I feel lost. And the last time I did any wii stuff was to update to 3.2U(for Brawl) and install the HBC, and I never touched the IOS stuff. What should I do from here; am I stuck or is there a way to play Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom without having to update?

I just looked through the "Avoid Disc Updates" but I still need to install IOS249, and seeing none of the options list 3.2U I need some help.

All you need to do are the "Steps needed by all Wiis after performing any needed steps above." steps. You must have missed the part just above the expandable sections which stated "Now, follow the appropriate instructions. Note that the final steps must be performed for all Wiis, but Wiis at 3.3 or later require additional steps first. For Wiis at 3.2 or less, choose the default IOS chosen by the installer when asked."

The day Perfect Dark is stable and smooth, if it ever comes, is the day I weep tears of joy.

I gotta ask, why do people stick with the old firmwares? Im not sure I see the reason behind it. Mine is fully updated and still modded, I still buy stuff off the Shop Channel, and I have zero incompatability with my USB loader.

I'm not entirely sure why people dont update and avoid worrying about all the updates found in games.

Perfect Dark runs smoothly, the video includes it too =P
The problem is that the sound is screwed, the same with some section in Golden Eye, but hey! it still a great progress run those RARE microcodes :D

Sure, it's OK right now, but there have been many times in the past when it was better to stay on a previous firmware than update. If you had no need for the new features, then the safest method was just to stick with what works.

On a 3.2 or earlier system, you actually have several benefits too as you don't need to fool around with the TBR steps to install IOS249 etc. I stayed on that firmware for as long as I could, mostly out of stubbornness.

Right now, there is that very minor risk of bricking when installing the boot2 update to worry about as well. If you have no need for SD channels, then there is little point to taking this tiny risk.

It really doesn't matter what firmware a system has. You can still have homebrew and all the other necessary features (Wii Shop etc.) on that firmware. There have been times when that was not true for the latest firmwares (4.0 took a very long time to fall), so there is logic to choosing not to update. However, if you want the new features, then you should update, of course. That's the choice each individual has.

For the record, my Wii is currently on 4.1. This was done via the NSMB Wii update, so I know there is no risk in the 4.2 update for me. Even though this is the case, my Wii will remain at 4.1 until there is a need to update or I am tricked into updating (which was the case with NSMB Wii in a way; I thought it was just 4.1, not 4.1+boot2). The only reason I can come up with not to update is still just pure stubbornness, but that has worked well in the past for me.

Ok I'm going crazy here.
I dunno what the fuck happened, for the first time ever I downloaded some cover directly from CFG Loader (v52b2) because I had the LAN adapter set-up already, so I though "what the hell, instead of doing it manually just for once...".
I'll be damned, I saw that I was gettin' some error ".png not correct" (or something similar iirc) but in the end the covers showed up so I thought it was just cheking through various IPs or Wiitdb's database, then in the middle of downloading a cover everything froze with a
BIG FIXED GREEN BAR (bolding so maybe someone recognize this kind of error) across the screen and the console reset itself.
Now everygoddamntime I go into CFG, it opens for like 5 seconds showing all the covers lined up and then BAM! it goes black and send me back to HBC. Everytime it's like that. I played through CFG this afternoon with no problem like any other day, just up until the cover download thingy.
I tried deleteing my previous cfgv52b and replaced it with the one just released few hours ago (called v52) and yet I have still the same problem: I noticed that I get the "freezing with green bar" if I move the wiimote to scroll the covers, while if I stay still with the pointer then it's more of a "going black and fading to the HBC channel".
I'm freakin' out a bit honestly.

You have a corrupted cover. Probably the one you downloaded. Please, move the file elsewhere and check if that solves your problem, if it does, then please contact me by PM so that you can send me the bad file. We keep hearing of these corrupted covers but are yet to actually get one of them to study it for errors, so please don't just delete it.

Oh, I hope you're right... but I've looked CFG's FAQ and it didn't mention this bug, I've only seen something resembling a "green bar error fixed". Dunno it that's related at all.

I'll do as you say, but how do I know which one is the corrupted one (to tell you)?

I can tell you right away that it' either (3D or FULL, that I'm sure since it doesn't crush on other layout... most probably it's FULL but can't be 100% sure):

Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All Stars (PAL); The Sky Crawlers (US NTSC); No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle (US NTSC) or Family Ski and Snowboard (PAL).

I'll report later.

Just copy the files elsewhere one at a time and it'll be easy to find the bad one. It'll probably be even easier just to llok at the files on a PC as the image should be corrupted there too.

If you don't have much time, just send them all to me.

Well, wii fucked again after just turning it off for a day. Can get it to say system files corrupted with slightly scrambled text, bootmii wont load etc. I'm gonna go with the hardware is fucked and just get a new wii. Should I just send into nintendo to repair? Its a launch unit so I assume its gonna cost me $$ to repair modded or not.

Found it, it's Tatsunoko (PAL) FULL - STKP08

I've uploaded it here

It's very interesting, thanks. Hopefully this will help the error be found (we already have some theories).

Edit: OK, turns out the cover is just corrupted at wiiboxart.com. Your best bet is probably to replace it with this image, or set your cover_url_full option to remove wiiboxart.

Yeah, I had already replaced it with WiiTDB's one, I'll just deleted every link other than them... I find they're the most reliable anyway.
I had no idea a corrupted image could cause such problems to CFG (and maybe other loaders too?). Interesting to know, I won't freak out next time :P
