GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Ok, I'm still having the same issue with my in-law's Wii. Hopefully someone can help me.

I did what I thought was a pretty successful update to 4.3, updated the homebrew channel, updated the IOS from the GAF tutorial, and installed StartPatch 4.3.1U to disable th checks.

The problem I have is when I put a newer game in and try to boot a retail game from the disc channel, all I get is a blank screen and the game never loads. Anyone have any idea what I need to do to get games booting from the disc channel?

So I've been prepping an SD card for my little brother who lives in NZ and has a PAL Wii. He's just way too insecure and paranoid about following the Wiki and would feel much better if I "walked him through it" so to speak.

He says it's 4.2 so I've got Banner Bomb ready to go on the card. I know it messes with other Wii files in the Private folder but what about the App folder? Will that be safe when he's installing HBC?

I was thinking of setting him up with StartPatch since he doesn't have a USB drive and he just wants a way that he can play my games (already finished and backed up to my USB Hard drive) and his American Gamecube games right from the get go. How exactly does it get past the IOS problems and Disc Updates of newer games? Anything I should worry about?

And even though I've never really used it on my Wii, I'm definitely setting him up with BootMii for good measure.
The installation steps in the Wiki have you get rid of the bannerbomb version of the private folder afterwards and return it to your original one, so that should go just fine.

StartPatch works by patching the system menu so that it operates differently. There are patches for region free gaming and disc update blocking. Don't bother playing with any of the patches that affect menu operation like removing the health screen startup. I've never trusted those.

Describe what this successful update was? If you are using the new instructions from the GWHT, you don't need to block updates any more. I suggest disabling the update block and letting one of those discs update your Wii (provided it is the same region).

Ok, everything I did was from GWHT. Here's the steps I took.

1) Backed up with BootMii
2) Updated the Homebrew Channel
3) Install IOS236
4) Install IOS249
5) Update to 4.3U using DOP-Mii
6) Install StartPatch and apply the various update blocks

The system previously was 4.0U with HBC, and boot2v4 already installed.

So given that scenario, I should still remove the update blocks and then when I pop the disc in, apply the update that comes up? It used to just show that software update was available on the disc channel instead of the game. Thanks.

I just want to say that i love my homebrew enabled wii now 300 times more than before because now i can use it (and WiiSX) to play POCKEEET FIGHTEEEEERRR !!! =D

For real? How well does the emu as a whole work?

Edit: NM Checking out the Compatibility List myself. Never knew it came so far along.

Okay, sorry fro the double post but serious question.

I was checking the Wiki and it mentioned there was new, recommended USB Loader Forwarder Channel. My old one was working fine except for the occasional hiccup and times where it whouldn't show the CFG Splash Screen for some reason.

With the new one I got, it works fine, yet for some reason the feature that writes to the play log adds in the time for the CFG Loader where it didn't before. Is there any way to fix this?

The Dop-Mii upgrade method is not complete. Games that require newer IOSes that aren't in that list must have those IOSes installed. Disabling StartPatch then running any of the updates from the discs will fix this, giving you a proper 4.3 installation. I may delete the Dop-Mii upgrade method from the tutorial, actually, given the issues it causes as an incomplete update method.

Do you mean that you get Cfg listed as a separate entry to the game? Did you perhaps start Cfg and quit without launching a game while testing the forwarder? If not, I'll have a look to see if there is any way around it.

Alright so I'm in a slight predicament here (or at least I think I am)

I just put homebrew on my sister's wii and got ios 222, 223, 236 and the usual ones on there for usbloader gx to work properly, but I read somewhere and thought that downgrading to 4.1U from 4.3U would be a good idea. I found out that it's pretty poiintless and I want to get it back to 4.3U and still have homebrew stuff (or have it re-installed if it needs to be deleted.) I also deleted the homebrew channel because I thought it would help before I update it to 4.3U, but I realized that priiloader is still on there so I'm not sure if it would be safe to update now or not.

So the question I'm really trying to get here is: Since I've downgraded it should I keep it here and just keep all the custom ios' or should I really update to 4.3? And if so how do I do that without a brick?

Okay that must be it, because I did some Wii Fit this morning and there was no CFGLoad entry.

I do have another problem though. I was trying to update the Shop Channel. I first tried DOP Shop but it couldn't download the update for some reason. I used DOP Mii, and I did the first part in downloading the shop update, exited and tried and failed at accessing the Shop. I went back in and realized I failed to do the other steps. So I installed IOS 56 and IOS 61 (with versions 5661 and 5662 respectively) and while I got access to the shop alright, the menu in the Homebrew Channel is now upside down.

Removing the HBC before upgrading to 4.3 is a really stupid thing, given the trouble you will have launching the HBC as Priiloader will be gone afterwards (there is a new system menu IOS) and at that point you will either need to have a forwarder channel installed, or to own one of the games with known hacks.

Also, GX and 4.3 don't really like co-habitating as you would be playing leap frog between stubbing the cIOSes and installing back over the top. You can avoid that by using the new cIOS installation methods in the tutorial which remove all that fuss and make it work really nicely.

For other updating questions, make sure you check the FAQ too.

You are using an old version of Dop-Mii and you must have applied Trucha patches to the IOSes you installed. Use Dop-Mii WiiBrew Edition or go back and make sure you aren't installing patched IOSes into your Nintendo-IOS slots.

You need to format the iPod drive first, as I don't think Cfg will recognise the iPod formatting correctly. Try formatting it to FAT32 using the methods in the tutorial. Several people have reported getting it working in the past, but I have never tried it myself.

Thanks for the help but I haven't had any luck, so I think I'm gonna just buy a portable HDD.

I'm thinking of buying that one. Is there anything I should know before buying a portable HDD? Any other recommended models around 50 dollars?

(General question, not really towards Clipper since I'm sure he's busy enough with questions)

Keep in mind that the Wii doesn't have USB 3.0 ports, so you will be relying on the 2.0 backwards compatibility. That drive also comes with encryption capabilities and preloaded software, which you will probably want to disable as they don't play nicely with the Wii.

Shouldn't be too hard to disable those things, right? I suppose I should dig around and check out some more drives.

Actually it's the latest version. It's just your instructions didn't specify what to do at all those "patch" prompts. The first time I said Yes to all. I did it a second time and said No to all, and that seemed to fix it.

After some searching I came across this page. Looking through the list this seems to be exactly what I am looking for... Has anyone used this drive before? Looks pretty good from what I have researched.

I classify the non-Wiibrew versions as old these days (both are currently maintained). The Wiibrew version doesn't give options to install those IOSes as patched, IIRC.

Weird issue with my hard drive:

It used to work fine with Config. USB Loader. I recently copied the GAF settings file (which I'm not sure I understand... since it doesn't seem to be GAF-themed or anything different) and since then my hard drive has not been detected upon launch of the Loader, even if I unplug/plug during detection. The weird thing is, I can start Uloader and it will also fail to detect the drive, but I can unplug/plug and it will find it. Then I can quit and go back to Cfg Usb Loader, and it will work fine. But once I power cycle the Wii, same problem.

Did you also copy across the theme.txt file? That's the important part of the theme. Anyway, I don't recommend it any more as I need to update to a new one that was created a short while ago.

delete the config.txt from the apps directory. That is a mistake on my part. You should only be using the one in /usb-loader. Upgrading Cfg and your IOSes via the tutorial (make sure you run the meta.xml steps) is also a good idea.

So I feel like I haven't updated my homebrew stuff in a while, and I see that there are a few changes to the wiki. I'm kind of gun shy as far as updating stuff that already works, so.. what's worth changing?

Currently I have:
4.2 firmware
no forwarders
config usb loader v60 (release)
running off of a wbfs formatted partition on a portable drive (other partition is fat32 I believe)
the ios settings from before you updated for the new ones

is it recommended to change any of that stuff for stability/feature/speed reasons, or am I fine where I am? just not sure what the new stuff gets me.

It doesn't really matter much, but if you perform the new steps with the altered IOS slots, then it means that you can accidentally update the Wii and your homebrew will still work. With your present setup, you'd need to reinstall everything.

You should ask in the DS emulation thread.

If you update your DSiXL to the latest firmware, you'll need to update your flash card first or it will be locked out (until you update the card using an older DS). Some cheaper cards don't have updates available.

Is there some idiot-proof guide to getting homebrew set up? I have the channel on my wii (which only seems to load with the SD card in), but I am convinced I have screwed up somewhere along the way. How do I uninstall and start over?

There's no need to uninstall. Just start over as if you were on a new Wii.

there an alternate link to get IOS236 without having to give my information?

[Thanks btw: I realize where my mistake was.... it's simply see above lol]

What do you mean? Sharebee shouldn't ask for information and it provides four different links to download the file.

one more dumbass question

I went ahead and updated the ios stuff and added the new cfg forwarder (because why not) and I was thinking about letting a disc (MJ the experience) go ahead and do its update, since it might need an ios or something. It's been months since i did the update to 4.2, so...

bootmii had to be installed at boot2v4 for it to even work at startup for a wii that's been updated to 4.2u, right? I won't lose anything at all by updating from disc, not even bootmii?

If you have previously performed the boot2v4 upgrade, either by the method in the tutorial or by performing an update from any disc or via the Internet after the release of NSMB Wii, then reinstalled BootMii, then you are safe and it won't try to upgrade it again, nor delete BootMii. If you haven't done that, it is the first part of the Upgrade steps on the tutorial.

Do most folks use snes9x GX 4.2.5 or 4.1.5 with cover mod? I only ask because I like the cover mod support but won't be worth running if 4.2.5 resolves substantial issues.

Stupid question: SDHC cards will work with the Wii, right? I'm thinking of buying this one off of Amazon. That'll work, right? Is there a better one I can use?

EDIT: After a bit of research, I see that they work. Yay!

oh man

my wii is doing that thing where it won't read dual layer discs.

i'm assuming if I send it to nintendo, they'll delete all my stuff, and i don't know how much extra they'll charge me for the cleaning/repair.
I have a lens cleaning kit on the way from nintendo, i'm praying that works out.

is there any way to like, rip my discs to the external drive using my PC's disk drive instead of the wii? or is that one of those things where you have to have a specific kind of drive?

You need a specific type and the type is discontinued.

Anybody having issues with NUSDownloader not working? I can't get anything from NUS right now. Need boot2v4.wad and if I can't get it from Nintendo looks like I'm screwed (trying to get upgraded to 4.2).

Works fine for me at the moment.

Ok, so I finally got around to doing this and got HomeBrew running on my Wii (one from the original launch day batch!). I used the instructions at the Tuturial site under "None of the above apply and I have a Wii on firmware 4.1 or less from any region". So far I've just installed the WiiMC thingy. It does seem to freeze when trying to pull up radio stations, but I'm not too worried about that now as I've had limited time to try it out.

Now that that is out of the way, I'd like to play my Christmas presents, Donkey Kong and Epic Micky. It it A-Ok to go ahead and update the system to 4.3? Its on 3.3U now.

uggest you update as your Wii doesn't have the necessary IOSes. Do so via these steps. The Upgrade FAQ answers some more questions.

What if I don't have access to a SD drive anymore?

Alright, the reason I'm wanting to homebrew now rather than later is that when I tried to play DKCR, it tried to download the latest firmware, and I know that that will make it much harder to enable homebrew. My question is, once I'm all homebrewed up, will I have to do anything special to play DKCR due to its firmware requirements? I'll be able to go online and stuff, right (never been online with the Wii before)? Is the custom firmware just recognized as the latest firmware?

You aren't installing custom firmware. The Wii has many slots that store different mini-OS type things called the IOSes. You are just installing some IOSes into slots that Nintendo hasn't used yet that have special features that allow you to read from the USB drive and so on. In addition, you install an extra channel or two onto the Wii as well. The original firmware, as well as the original IOSes, remain fully intact (unless you follow a bad tutorial) and you will have no problem running DKCR or anything else.

To ensure you don't run into any troubles, just make sure you follow our own tutorial:

Is there a utiliy that will only format part of a drive for wbfs or does Everyone do something different now?
Yes there is, and it is part of the tutorial (GParted), but there is no need to reformat the drive to WBFS any more. Cfg supports FAT and NTFS partitions and they are better supported than the WBFS format, so there is no need to reformat.

So do I have to reformat and re-rip all my disks or can I use wbfs manager to put iso's on my PC the reformat to fat32 and just copy all the Isos back?

If it's in the tutorial let me know

From what I know, you can do that (transfer from WBFS to PC, format then transfer back). The disadvantage in that case would be that, since you'll be transferring iso-images to the HDD, you'll have a bunch of 4+GB games filling your HDD faster, even on games like New Super Mario Bros. which are actually under 500MB.

Don't know if there's a tool on Configurable (or someplace else) to reduce the size of the games or something.

Obviously Clipper knows better; so maybe he'll reply shortly and contradict everything I said. :p
