GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Hi guys, I wanted to know how do you uninstall the homebrew and restore the wii to the default configuration?
It is extremely difficult to do it. You have to really know what you are doing, what you have installed and so on and selectively delete it all. You can't get rid of all the evidence either, unless you still have a BootMii backup from when you first installed the HBC.

Why do you want to do this?

i have a japanese wii and i'm trying to play a US region fire emblem path of radiance gamecube game but the wii won't load the game.

is there a homebrew that will make the wii region free for gamecube games?

Yes. All the region free methods on the tutorial work for Gamecube.

i tried configurable usb loader and when i first ran path of radiance it loaded fine but said that the memory card was corrupt and needed to reformat.

I just turned the system off and removed the memory card and loaded the game without the card this time. now when i load the game it goes to a black screen with some vertical pink stripes. any idea whats going on?

Note that Japanese games need a different memory card format to non-Japanese games. US and PAL should happily share a card, though. You probably should try it with a different memory card (formatting WILL delete all games on the card). That might not fix your display problem but it is worth a try. Also, try holding B during launch of the game in case it has the 480p menu choice.

I'm wondering if the memory card corrupt message is a sort of disc read error message caused by the Wii import loaders. In any case my Japanese path of Radiance worked fine on a US/EU formatted card when played on an EU gamecube....its another possibility.

Thats only if you are using it on the respective hardware or hardware forced to that country such as a soldered US/Japanese switch on a Gamecube* (as the firmware can only read/encode the format for its region so sees anything out of it as corrupt). I don't know if country forcing** is making the system behave as a US gamecube so causing the Japanese card to be "corrupt".

*-These people have to use a seperate memory card while people who used freeloader did not need to and also had to put up with a few games not being able to save.

**-Its required to make Japanese text appear correctly in a few Wii and Gamecube games.

I thought I remembered it being a problem with Freeloader too. That was my only import method back in the GCN days (I had a PAL GCN), but I didn't import anything from Japan, so it didn't affect me. I was aware that I would need a new card if I had gotten a Japanese one, though. I'm pretty sure the corrupt message is the one that came up when you used the wrong region card.

So I imported and ripped Pikmin 2 for Wii. Leaving default settings it seems to run fine, except for what seems to be a 1 or 2 pixel high row of garbage across the bottom. I don't know if that's just a normal quirk of this game (kind of reminds me of something Super Mario Sunshine does on my set), something to be expected from playing PAL games on NTSC console, or something that would be gotten rid of through options? I tried fiddling with the video options, but the only other thing I got was Nothing At All, which is a definite step worse.

Hey guys! I got CFG USB Loader up and running today. It's working perfectly but I'm wondering if it's supposed to take a while to install a game? I'm installing No More Heroes 2 at the moment. It's 3.26GB and the ETA for it to be done installing is 15 minutes. Is that at all normal? Brawl took about 30 minutes and Galaxy 2 took five minutes.

I'm using a FAT32 partition on this HDD: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003B8PPEY/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I'd say to treat it as normal. It's probably the way your TV is handling the change. You could try forcing NTSC in the video options to see if that fixes it. Also, if your set is 480p and you have component cables, try setting video to Force NTSC and Video Patch to All.

Those are typical installation times.

So, will a Wii simply not recognize an SD card bigger than 2GB?

Also, a game like the JPN Disaster should work on a regular non-HD TV using the standard cables, right?

i gave up on path of radiance and decided to just play radiant dawn but i now have a new problem. the game wont start off of usb loader, it immediately goes to a black screen and the wii remote turns off too. i have the same problem with punch out also, but i can run smash brothers brawl just fine off of usb loader.

i tried running radiant dawn off the disk but i get the same problem. i tried ripping it to usb loader again hoping to fix it and it seemed to rip just fine, but when i launch it it just freezes at a black screen

i tried this on my brothers wii and everything works just fine on his. his wii is a US version 4.2U firmware if that makes a difference.

here is what im using

US ver. fire emblem radiant dawn
JPN wii 4.3J firmware

loader version 70b6
cfg base: sd/usb-loader
fs: [sd:usb:]
ios248 (r21006)
base: ios56 d2x v6 mload v1.0

I'm using a 4GB SD card without problems. I think 2GB is a limitation of the Wii software, but homebrew and config loader work fine with the full capacity from what I've seen.

Sometimes mine will appear to freeze at a black screen when loading. Its just a random occurrence. It seems like a long time, but never more than a minute.

SDHC support was added to Wii in firmware 4.0, I think. Thus, older firmwares and early games like SSBB do not support it. Hence, most of the initial tricks you need to perform to hack the Wii require an SD card rather than SDHC. Once you have your Wii hacked, SDHC cards work just fine.

Try setting some of the options. In particular, the Country Patch is needed for PAL games on NTSC-J consoles, I think. Also experiment with the other patching options like VIDTV and so on to see if any help. None of the options can cause harm, so don't be scared to try them out, just in case.

So regarding the 24 hour waiting period, should I have my Wii not connected to the internet at all, giving it a red light, or do I just turn it off and wait around, with a yellow light?

i tried to boot all of my wii games from the disk from inside usb loader and the only ones that don't work are punch out and fire emblem: radiant dawn. sucks that those 2 wont boot from the disk or usb but at least i know its the game and not the system.

i was thinking of doing something like changing regions or downgrading firmware.

edit: just finished messing with the options and it turns out fire emblem needed vidtv turned on and punch out needed country fix turned on.

thx for the help

What 24 hour waiting period?

For the Smash Bros. method.
Oh right, you were using the daily download? Switching that option off and waiting the time should be enough.

Alternatively, I guess moving your save off the Wii temporarily and creating a new one might be another option.

But that's not possible with Smash, is it? I thought it couldn't be copied without HB already installed.

So is there a good compatibility list for the various region free apps?

No way to test for Xenoblade, The Last Story, and Pandora's Tower obviously but would like to be sure that I can play:

[PAL] One Piece Unlimited Cruise 1
[PAL] One Piece Unlimited Cruise 2
[PAL] Another Code R

and Fatal Frame 4 with the translation patch

Fatal Frame 4 with the translation patch is a special case and the developers of the patch have their own homebrew method. Check the webpage. I don't even know how you make it load in a USB loader. The authors didn't want to run the risk of getting tarred as pirates or pirate-enablers.

Another Code R plays fine in Gecko and/or Configurable USB Loader. Almost every PAL game will except games that render exclusively in 576i and can't be forced into any NTSC video mode--I'm not sure which these are but they're very few and far between.

alright I just picked up my second Wii from a friend of mine and I am ready to get started. The Wii is firmware 4.2U and already has the homebrew channel installed. I do not have the SD card that was used to set it up though.

Now I want to get Fatal Frame 4 running and they do have a method for Wii's that have the HBC installed. Do I need all that bootmii, hackmii stuff on the SD card for the homebrew channel to work?

Instructions for the FF4 patch include the following passage:

Extract both of the above Zip files. Place the Zero4 folder, the private folder, the boot.dol, and the riivolution folder on your SD card. If you are running via HBC, add the Zero4 in /apps to your existing one instead.

If your Wii has an internet connection, make certain it is active. If your Wii does not have an Internet connection, please go to the offline installation instructions for further help.

Place the SD card in your Wii.

Can I just make the /apps folder myself or do I need to do some formatting?

If I connect to the internet will it make me update? There is a process for doing it offline as well but it looks to be slightly more complicated.

Any help would be appreciated.

You don't need the other stuff, but it is safe to have it there. I recommend you upgrade the HBC, do a firmware upgrade to 4.3 and then do the Fatal Frame 4 steps. You can just create any folders on the SD card on your PC like you'd create any other folder. The Wii doesn't treat these folders in any special way.

Quick question for the many smart people in this thread:

I have a new(ish), post-2008 Wii. Is it worth it at all to install BootMii? I'm technologically inept, and all I'm planning on doing is installing the Homebrew Channel and Gecko to play import games. Everything I'm reading on the subject suggests BootMii has limited functionality on the newer systems.

I don't want to lose my VC games, but I just don't know if it's worth it to install BootMii if I'm not planning on installing a bunch of different Homebrew-related stuff.

I was wondering if I could use my gamecube controller for monster hunter Wii, instead of resorting to buy the classic one.

Is this possible, any coding permitting me to do so?

I got Gecko working so I can play imports now. I don't have Fatal Frame yet so I'm not sure if that worked. The Riivolution application isn't showing up at all. I guess I'll figure out that mess when I come to it. At least I can play Another Code R and my One Piece games when they arrive in the mail.

Thanks for all the help.

Has anyone tried the Arc Rise Fantasia Undub patch? Is it complicated to get it to work?

BootMii allows you to make a backup of the Wii's system data first before making changes to it. You can skip it if you think you can do without a backup.

If all you plan to do is follow my tutorials, you don't need a Bootmii backup. It's still nice to have one just in case, but you will be fine without it.

The only way this would be possible is via an Ocarina code. I don't think one has been created, though as it doesn't seem to be in the geckocodes.org database of cheats. Your only real option, besides using the default controls or buying a classic is to find someone willing to try to program that cheat code for you.

Okay I want to use cheats for a virtual console game Breath of Fire 2. I realize Gecko no longer loads into the VC channels after system 4.0.

The only way around this seems to be using Dop-Mii.

Is that a safe program? It seems like a program that could brick your Wii if used improperly.

Also how do I use it? Apparantly resources out there seem to be terrible at giving instructions to people.

Dop-Mii is indeed dangerous if you do something stupid. It does warn you before you do most of those stupid things, though. I'm also not sure exactly how it would help in this case and I don't know what you need to do to get cheats with VC stuff.

If it's what I'm possibly thinking, that you want to use it to downgrade your Wii, DON'T DO IT. That is extremely risky and it is definitely not worth it just to enable a few cheats.

Probably been asked already but is there a good guide to get started with the Ocarina codes thingie? I got DKCR and having to shake every 5 seconds is unbearable, so I want to map it to a button. Seems Retro wants to ruin every Nintendo franchise.

Download and compile the .gct file for your game using Cfg or Gecko Codes' online gct creator. Put that into sd:/cheats, usb:/cheats or <cfg_base_dir>/cheats and then in the options for the game, turn on Ocarina. You might need to experiment with various hook types in the options too as the default hook type does not work for all games.

I've also got to say, I almost didn't help due to the Retro/waggle hate combo, but... sigh.

Playing online does work and it seems you are safe to do so. While Nintendo could theoretically use your load times to detect that you are using a drive, it appears they can't be bothered to do anything about it.

Come on Mejilan, we haven't posted the link in a few pages, so a little bit of leeway can be given. For all your homebrew and import related questions:

Haha. Sorry, was a little snarky last night due to an extended Wii surgery session! But happily my Wii can now load GCN games from a HDD! On that note, can anyone recommend me a reliable powered USB hub?

What?

Which one is safer and/or better to use? Gecko or USB Loader? I'm going to install the Region Free app soon and just want to play the games off the disc, if it makes any difference.

Gecko is probably safer as you don't install as much stuff to the Wii (but as long as you can follow the instructions on the GWHT, both are just as safe as each other). USB Loader is possibly better as it has more video forcing options.

If anybody was having trouble with the IOS236 part of the install due to not having an Internet connection, it seems a workaround the crashing issue has finally been discovered. It was discovered by davebaol and the new version should be released sometime in the next 24 hours. :D

Edit: Also, I'm finally updating the launch page to add some of the newer exploits like the Lego Batman one and Tales of Symphonia one.

Edit 2: Launch page updates are complete.

So, on the Gecko page, it says to turn the VIDTV patch on for Japanese games. Where do I find the VIDTV patch? I haven't found it in the Gecko options, and haven't been finding it in the Homebrew Browser either.
