GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Guys, there's a fucking BUG that will prevent USB Loader working:

You can't have your connection setup as using a Lan Adapter, no sir,
NOT EVEN IF THE ADAPTER ISN'T ACTUALLY CONNECTED.

So here, after hours and hours wasted trying tons of different drives, I "discovered" I was forced to completely neglect my Wii from accessing the net, therefore NOT Agreeing to the Wii Connect 24 and such.

That was the ONLY way to be able to use any of the USB Loader, even after having changed the config.
This has to be quoted again. I did too spend hours and hours trying to find an answer. Not until I've read the endless posts in this thread I finally found one. Now my Wii doesn't crash anymore, but sadly my old HDD doesn't seem to be compatible since it still freezes with that. I can install to my USB thumb drive though, but it takes forever to install anything to that.

Don't WD hard drives have issues? I've been reading about them failing or something. Can you clear this up for me before I dive in and buy one? I don't mind the type of hd I buy as long as I know it won't screw up on me :p
If you're talking about drive spindown time, this doesn't affect all WD Passport Drives (there's no consistency since even within the same line they won't always use the exact same model drive inside) but WD doesn't (so far) have a tool to turn it off. Meanwhile Seagate does have a tool you can download for Windows to turn it off so you never have to worry about it.

Also Seagate gives 5 year warranties, not the 3 years everyone else does.

Did the first tutorial Clipper linked to and now have the Homebrew channel up, eep! :lol

Also grabbed the homebrew broswer, very nice though every so often it crashes with a screen with a bunch of numbers, is that normal? Also got errors trying to install the DVD thing after I loaded it for the first time, but I'll give t another shot. Can't wait to try Sam & Max and Full Throttle on Scumm! When I can find my discs of them that is..

Bought a Verbatim Smartdisk 500GB from The Source, who has them at $109CAD. Drive worked immedately with Ultimate USB Loader. HDD must be powered on before putting up the Wii though, for those concenred with wanting the HDD to boot up WITH the Wii.

We're happy with this anyhoo. :D

Wii would be my all time favorite console if it were possible to play GC games with USB loader. Can somebody more versed with Wii architecture say if that's even possible technically?

A cursory look around GBATemp say it's likely to happen eventually.

Only 72 Gigs for my collection of 35 Disc games. I say you are good to go!

I have a 320GB WD My Passport. it is 80 USD at CompUSA.

Some of our game install sizes are different. Such as my Mario Kart Wii being 2.79GB whereas yours is 2.59GB or my Link's Crossbow Training (0.37GB compared to your 0.22GB). My install sizes seem to be a bit larger than yours. :(

I am a noob, I have a 4.0 wii, I got the homebrew and dvdx stuff installed, it is working and I installed the homebrew browser.

I couldn't find a guide but on the USB loader I tried to install it from the Hombrew channel but I just get a custom IOS error.

Does it not work on 4.0 or am I doing it wrong?

Looks like you may have the update partition still in your files.

you need to install cIOS.

I'll keep looking. Maybe I'll find a 320 GB for the same price.

MICRO CENTER!!!

The 500's are on sale for 125, bought one for my girl just yesterday.

Protip! - They have the thing for your pc that lets you control it with your mind!

EDIT - Maybe you guys can help, gbatemp is failing me. I'm on a CIOSCORP'd 4.0 system, HBC, etc.

Why do I want/need to go to BOOTMII, and is the install going to be messy on top of what I already have?

The thread has gotten huge but if you start from page 47 or so you should see all the info you need ;)

Is there a program out there that can remove those update partitions? Actually, the better question is, should I be worried that they're still on there?

NAND Backup in case you bork up the major system files.

Nah, they're inactive on the loaders.
But they act as a decent level of security if you need a certain file to roll back on.

I think my Wii is messed beyond repair (for installing homebrew stuff)...

Tried installed cIOS and got nowhere...

I can still play my games and my downloaded stuff, but not anything new.

Is there a quick tutorial on how to do everything once your at 4.0? And is there a way to clear your system of all homebrew and start over?

I prefer them on than off. USB Loader 1.1-1.4 (and most of the mods based off these) only install the game partition.
USB Loader 1.5 installs all partitions (game and on-disc update).

I only know of one 1.5 mod that allows you to choose between game only or all upon installation, and that's Configurable USB Loader.

I got a 320 GB for $60. I don't think I'll need that much space since I have about 20 games or so.

Mejilan said:
Yeah, I've got 60 games installed already. No way in hell I'm making channels for even a fraction of them. USB Loader HDD Forwarder channel ftw.

You don't have to make them. There's a couple of zip files around containing channels for pretty much every game out there. There's also a program that'll look at the games on your disk and make channels for them, then you just have to install them.

I think Mejilan prefers that his Wii's home screen isn't cluttered with channels for each game. At least, that's why I haven't made separate channels for each game.

Quick question. To get 4.0 installed, all I would need are the proper files and a normal SD Card right? I remember reading somewhere you needed a SDHC or something for 4.0. Not sure if thats true or not.

This is my first dive into Wii Homebrew so sorry if I come across noobish.

Ugh...

I get to this:

downgrading your wii

* download this
* drag everything to your sd card, say yes if it asks to merge.
* put sd card in wii, boot wii, run homebrew channel, run CMDVDX34
* run all parts of the application one at a time in the order specified.
some people report lockups during one or all of these steps. if your wii locks up, power it down manually and run through this step again. if a given step does not work the second time, move on to the next portion. don't worry; this is normal and will not damage your wii.
* run wad manager ios35 version (WMIOS35)
* install ios35.wad
* run it again
* install cios7.wad
* your wii is downgraded--note, the actual firmware version doesn't change--and ready to do the usb loading thing.
* click here to continue

The third step of the first part freezes up, goes to a black screen doesn't continue...so I reboot, try again...same thing. It says if it doesn't work on the second time, move on...I do...then I try the WMIOS35 thing and it fails...try again...fails.

Now what?

JUST A LITTLE TIP THAT FUCKED ME UP.

I KNOW THAT THIS HACKING THING HAS BEEN GOING ON A WHILE, SO PEOPLE MAY FORGET TO PUT AT THE TOP OF THEIR GUIDES...

Try the third step again, maybe (you could just be unlucky). Also, if you have a new Wii with a serial number that starts with LU64, you may not be able to use this method (or any right now).

Oh, and GAF's Stumpokapow should get all the credit for the tutorial.

My error is with the libfat something or other...

That's where it locks up and gives me the error.

Mines a launch unit...so it shouldn't be that.

Yeah, I tried my WAD Manager again (I have two SD cards, one that I install from, one that I have software on)...and I can't do anything with either. I'll try the third set up one last time.

Clipper said:

I was doing the 4.0 upgrade via Waninkoko's installer, and some other steps, and it kept freezing when trying to install an IOS or something, and I was losing my fucking mind trying to figure out the issue (I hadn't done any wii hacking in months). I was so angry yet happy when I figured out that my GC stuff was still in.

Damn Gamecube memory cards. *shakes fist*

I took out the GC stuff...

I get to that "Select PatchMii when prompted" or something or other...then wait...network initializes and then BAM...black screen and nothing happens.

(EDIT)
It flashes "File invalid" right before it goes to black and freezes there.

Eew, no thanks. I prefer having one channel that'll launch my lovely GUI-based Cfg USB Loader. From there, I simply click on the box art cover of my game of choice, and I'm off!

Jesus...

I wonder if I can just start fresh on my Wii...save all of my VC games and game saves onto an SD card and just start over...

I think I've tried doing this shit so many different ways that it's all fucked up.

So which usb loader do you guys use? I'm probably going to go with the one recommended by Stump, but I'd like some opinions first.
Try the configurable USB loader. Neato piece of software.

There are guides out there to "virgin" your wii, you should google it.

The answer is probably something stupid though, keep trying! (also, those instructions you quoted on the last page, say that if a step doesn't work, to just skip it and keep going, did you try that yet?)

Yeah, moved on to the next step (run wad manager ios35 version (WMIOS35))

And it says there's a libfat something or other Error.

i'm probably going to mod my virgin 4.0 wii tonight or tomorrow (depends on my sd card) is this a good guide to follow? anything i should keep in mind? (already unplugged my gc stuff)

Dude, you're out of luck for a while. 4.0 virgin is not hackable yet.

Yes, works perfectly. Just follow it exactly.
Also Preloader doesn't work with SDHC cards, so don't install it after you're done with that if you want to use SDHC.

That is a good guide. You can also use the Bootmii installer to install the HBC and then follow the guide linked to in big flashing letters on the previous page.

Other things to do in preparation are to remove any other USB devices from your Wii and turn off Wii LAN adapter settings (may not be necessary, but worth mentioning).
