GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Awesome, thanks :)
No, don't do that. That will only work if you already have BootMii.
Edit:Oops, just reread things. Didn't notice the use of 'apps' folder before. My bad.

The HBC loads both .elf and .dol files. Just rename the file boot.elf and put it in a subdirectory of the apps folder.

HELP ME GAF!!!!!! PLEAAASEEE!!! :D

the thing is that my girlfriend recently bought a used wii and when we instaled it and get to the configuration options we saw the dreaded opera error. So the wii is semi bricked.
I was thinking on updating the wii with a ntsc update, the most recent one(wii sport resort) to try to unbricked.

please gaf help me, thank in advance and sorry for the bad english.

Updating the Wii might save you if you're lucky. Very few recent games actually update your system menu any more, though. WSR will likely only install IOS55 and leave your system semi-bricked. I can't remember the most recent game that had an actual update. It might help if you can contact the seller and ask exactly how he semi-bricked his system.

Question guys.

What's the situation with the region free on Wii homebrew?

I would love to be able to just slot a US game in and just get it started. Is that possible now?

I thought djmattiepoo said this? Thanks for clearing it up, man :D

Now you can start it without slotting it in :)

Three ways:

  1. Gecko OS.
  2. USB Loader
  3. Preloader

Gecko OS is the easiest way, but you have to start it each time. USB Loader is the most convenient way, but you again have to start it each time. Preloader will allow you to boot it from the disc channel, but it comes with high risk of bricking your Wii if you aren't careful.

Preloader comes with a high risk of bricking? Care to explain why?
It was my understanding that it's basically as safe as any other system flash.
That is, so long as the power isn't interrupted during the flashing process, you're golden.
For what it's worth, Preloader takes something like a second to install, way shorter than a firmware flash/update (which by that token, is arguably "more dangerous.") Is there something specific to Preloader that I don't know about? Hell, the thing was created to institute a layer of brick protection/recovery!

Were you replying to my post? Asking because my question had nothing to do with the movie in WSR, I was just asking confirmation about the steps to catch up with firmware/BootMii/cIOS/Configurable USB Loader/etc. being in the correct order and with nothing missing.
Thanks for confirming the fact I don't need alt. dol to play WSR, though :)

Sorry about that! Usually, when someone quotes a wall of text, bolds one excerpt of it, and asks something to the effect of, "anyone?" then that means that they're really only looking for confirmation of the bolded bit.

So yeah, that's what I responded to. Again, sorry! :)

No problem :D I had bolded it because I had just added that part to my original post :)

Hermes' has updated his IOS (222/223) to v4. It's already confirmed working with Cfg and GX. V4 improves compatibility with Wiis, so if you have had trouble using it before, try again now (instructions are in the tutorial). It also seems to have improved hard drive compatibility and sped up quite a bit (partially due to a move to IOS38 as the base IOS).

Oooh, no need to wait for a new version of Cfg USBL? I had made the early jump to v3 and got screwed for it, so I held off this time!

Thanks for the confirmation!

Quick question about homebrew. I'm pretty ignorant on the subject. I was wondering..

Is there any way I could create multiple save states for a VC game? so that I could have an entire game blocked off into parts?

I think I could do it without homebrew, but it would be a big pain in the butt transferring the flies via sd card and renaming the files and all.

So here's the deal. got everything set up on my new sdhc card, trying to get usb loader working. installed the ios249 just fine. used gparted to set up a new primary partition on my drive, but it's not recognized by the launcher program so it won't format.

do i need to get a drive that has its own power supply or will it power over usb like it does when i plug it into my computer?

Hey guys, I'm trying to install Homebrew now, but I seem to be having some trouble.

I renamed the original "Private" folder to "Privateold". I downloaded and unzipped aad1f, which created a new "Private" folder. I then downloaded and unzipped the HackMii Installer, which created a "hackmii_installer_beta3" folder. It says to rename the "installer.elf" file to "boot.elf", but there isn't an "installer.elf", and there's already a "boot.elf".

I then put the SD card in my Wii, following the instructions as to when and where. A prompt came up saying "Load boot.dol/elf?", along with the "If you paid for this, you were scammed" message. But if I choose yes, it says: "/boot.dol" could not be opened.

I noticed that on the guide, it says it should ask me to install "boot.elf". Does this "boot.dol/elf" have anything to do with it?

Please help! :-(

EDIT: Never mind; I forgot to copy the file to the root of the SD card.

I'm just using a 2.5" HDD in a USB caddy, no external power supply

There was an issue with some external HDDs powering down when idling during games, but I think that may be fixed now. I need to have a ruddy good scan of this thread and redo the OP - maybe throw in an FAQ for stuff like that

htown: download wbfs manager for your pc (if you have a pc) and format it there. i'm sure there are mac alternatives, but i'm not familiar.

I've installed Gecko, and it seems to be working fine (haven't has a US game running for more than a minute though, so here's hoping there's no long-term problems). But that guide says:

# Use Launch Game to play your import game or local game without updating
# Once you have launched a local game this way, you should be able to launch it in the Disc Channel without updates from then on
# You can also use Rebooter to reboot your Wii to allow it to detect and play import games in the disc channel

* This only seems to work on some Wiis, perhaps a firmware 4.0 thing

I got Metroid Prime 3 (US) running on my PAL Wii, but I have to manually go through Gecko each time; I can't go through the disc channel. Also, what is Rebooter? I can't see any mention of it anywhere.

What would happen if I switched on "Force PAL 50", "Force PAL 60", and "Force NTSC"? All of them? Would that force any game I put in to be recognised in the disc channel?

Rebooter is one of the options in the Gecko OS menu. It reboots your Wii in an import friendly way. This doesn't help you. None of those options will help you either.

You will need to use Gecko OS every time you want to play import games, unless you want to further hack your Wii instead. Preloader is the tool that will give you seamless disc loading of import games. I don't add it to the tutorial as it does come with a high risk of bricking your system if you are not careful (and there are several in this thread to prove it).

If you want to take the risk, go ahead. Plenty of people swear by it. Just remember that you are going to need to wait for the new Preloader hacks every time you update the Wii if you do install it.

Just checking, you did take note that it only works in one of the two USB ports on the Wii, right?

Ah, thanks. I won't bother then. Manually going through Gecko each time is a minor inconvenience compared to having to switch the video cable between my NTSC and PAL Wii. I can sell my NTSC Wii now as well. Besides, if I can install Wii firmware updates without having to search for Gecko updates, I'd rather do that. Besides, I really don't want to be downloading a great deal of stuff.

Another question, since everything is all set up now, and I've gone back to my original "private" directory, can I delete the new one I set up? Or is it still being used? Are the Homebrew Browser and Gecko being ran off the Wii harddrive or the SD card's second "private" folder (which I've now renamed to "privatenew")?

I hope I'm being clear enough; it's hard to word properly.

Oh, and could you please point me in the right direction in regards to what I need to download cheat codes? Besides playing import games, I really want to screw around with Brawl.

Installed Hermes cIOSes (rev4) last night, and everything is going swimmingly (CFG USBL v42a). Okami runs great!

Incidentally, 42b was just released that improves v4 support a little bit.

Yep, Gecko should work no matter what. Just check here before updating your Wii to make sure HBC still works.

The other private directory was simply the bannerbomb hack. You don't really need it any more, so feel free to delete it.

You actually use Gecko OS to do your cheats too. Go here for the codes and more info. I can't really help as I don't use cheats myself.

I downloaded the updated Opera browser without repercussion.

Yep, noticed it after I posted here, right before I booted up Okami. Not sure what the improvement is, but both 42a and 42b have been treating me well.

Couple more questions. Again, I am teh noobs so be gentle.

When I start my Wii I always get a greyish screen with several icons with bootmii at the bottom left. My wiimote will not turn on and I have to hit reset on my Wii to get it to boot. Any suggestions?

Also, is all of this running off of the memory card? For example if I bought a bigger memory card and just copy and pasted evrything off one card to the other and loaded up Homebrew would everything still work fine?

Finally, I installed the DVDX with Homebrew. Now how do I play movies? Can you actually put a DVD in your wii and play it? If so, how?

Yeah that's the bootmii screen. You can use a gamecube controller to select whatever you'd like (you can also use the buttons on the wii console). i don't know if you've done it yet, but be sure to back up your nand to sd. it only takes a few minutes, and can protect you from a bricked wii.

You can edit the config file (sd:/bootmii/bootmii.ini) to load directly to the system menu (sysmenu) or homebrew channel (hbc) after a certain amount of time (bootdelay). pressing a button on your gamecube controller or wii console will stop the countdown.

So you'd want something like this:
Code:
AUTOBOOT=SYSMENU
BOOTDELAY=2

You can move everything to another SD card with no problem.

Thanks. My SD card has a NAND file on it. I think I'm safe?

Edit: I got stalled midway through writing this. Good catch Nabs.

BootMii doesn't support Wii Remotes. If you want to disable BootMii at startup, change the name of the sd:/bootmii directory or copy it to a different drive. If you want to set BootMii so that it autoboots to the system menu or to the HBC, you need to change the settings in the .ini file for BootMii. Instructions for this are in the tutorial, or there is an application called BootMii Configurator that will let you do it on your Wii.

Also, is all of this running off of the memory card? For example if I bought a bigger memory card and just copy and pasted evrything off one card to the other and loaded up Homebrew would everything still work fine?
The only things not on your card are the BootMii stub (which simply looks for the main BootMii app and goes to the system menu if not found), the HBC and any cIOSes that you installed (i.e., IOS222/223/249). The rest is on your SD card. You can transfer information to another card like you say.

Finally, I installed the DVDX with Homebrew. Now how do I play movies? Can you actually put a DVD in your wii and play it? If so, how?
You need MPlayer CE. Get it via the Homebrew Browser. You should be warned that playing of DVDs on the Wii may damage the laser and cause early failure. Only do this if you don't have a better DVD player available.

Thanks for the help, Clipper. :-)

One more question though; I've set up Bootmii, Homebrew Channel, Browser, and Gecko on my own and a friend's Wii, and while using Browser on both of them, I'd get a error screen saying something like "DSI Exception Occurred". It seems to happen at random, as upon starting it up again both times, I was able to download Gecko and exit before it happened again. But I'd really like to know what's causing this, as having had a quick glance through the different applications, I'd actually now like to see what's available (I'm particularly interested in Scumm), but the possibility of my Wii freezing makes me reluctant to use the Homebrew Browser again.

In regards to importing stuff though, everything seems to be working just fine, and it was a LOT simpler than I expected. Thanks to everybody for the help and the great guide. I agree that a lot of people are being put off Homebrew, as on the surface it seems quite daunting, when in reality, it's really quite straightforward.

DSI exceptions simply the way that apps crash much of the time. It's kind of similar to a BSOD. There's no danger to your Wii when it occurs, so try going in and just take your time (I've found the Browser can get overwhelmed if you move through it too fast).

Meaningless edit to test something out (please ignore):

I just got the Homebrew Channel set up and working, big thanks to Meijilan for helping me out! :D

It was incredibly easy to get going, and I can't believe I missed out on this for so long. I had no idea that you no longer need to do a Twilight Hack to get this stuff running. Now I can finally play U.S. Wii and Game Cube games on my Japanese Wii! I'm stoked!

It's been awhile since I updated usb loader. Currently, I have some usbloader called "usbloader 1.5". I have either cios v9 or v10. not sure which one and I am currently on FW 4.0U. I am looking at the GAF guide right now and the latest version of configurable usb loader is v41. Do I need to upgrade to the latest nintendo firmware to use this or can I stay on what I have now. Also, I assume cios v9 or v10 won't work with this? Thanks.

You can stay on 4.0, but you might as well upgrade to 4.1 anyway as it has no impact on homebrew. Also, rev 9 and 10 will still work on most (but not all) games, although you would need to turn on the "anti-002 fix". You should upgrade to rev 14 for maximum compatibility, though. Installing Hermes' IOS is also a good idea if you want to play SSBB, MPT or music games.

Updating the Wii might save you if you're lucky. Very few recent games actually update your system menu any more, though. WSR will likely only install IOS55 and leave your system semi-bricked. I can't remember the most recent game that had an actual update. It might help if you can contact the seller and ask exactly how he semi-bricked his system.

thanks, i asked the seller but he didnt know didnt wanted to help, maybe a drowngrade could help but im afraid of bricking my wii completeli :(.
Is there any app that tells me my wii vercion?

Either I haven't been installing the right, most updated Homebrew stuff or something, because recently after downloading the latest version of Opera I keep getting a "your system files are corrupted" when I try turning it on. I tried uninstalling the Homebrew channel via the maintenance mode but it still comes up with the same error message. Uninstalling Opera Browser thankfully allows me to access my Wii again, but any attempts to look at my SD card (which has both a copy of the Browser Channel and Homebrew Channel on) freezes the Wii so I can't access Homebrew anymore... and I dare not install Opera again.

I haven't updated the Homebrew Channel in quite a while, but my Wii has been updated via the internet to the most recent version.

Am I now completely screwed in terms of Homebrew? Yay ignorance! Not.

Has SDHC compatibility improved much? I'm planning on getting a 16GB card and was wondering if switching from SD to SDHC would mess anything up. Thanks again for such a informative and helpful thread everyone.

Thanks, everything worked out. When I am selecting a game under IOS, I can choose 249, 222-yal, 222-mload, 223-yal, 223-mload, and 250. I assume 249 is rev14. What do the other ones mean? Thanks.

You don't still have BannerBomb on your SD card do you? If you have an sd:/private/wii/title/aktn directory, then delete or move it elsewhere and it might fix the problem. Oh, and HBC on the SD is useless, you might as well just delete it as you can't copy it back.

It has a bit. It is still a gamble, though. Make sure you get a good brand.

All of this is explained in README-CFG.txt and the tutorial (check the "I want to use a specific IOS as default." part), but the basic rundown are that the yal ones are kwiirk's IOS, the mload ones are Hermes' IOS and 249 and 250 are Waninkoko's. The only ones you should be interested in are 249, 222-mload and 223-mload, and instructions for using the non-249 ones are in the tutorial too.

Yo team... where's the authoritative place to find decent Ocarina cheat txt files? Everyone references usbgecko.com, but they appear to be gone.

It's now geckocodes.org but if you use a USB loader, it should be able to autofetch the codes for you.

Installed HBC fine added Geko OS and GC Boot on a Japanese Noir 4.0 then updated to 4.1

I also installed MPlayer CE as I want to use DVD playback ocasionally however I understand I need some further files to enable DVD support.

Will it be okay to add the required files or will I get bricked.

Please help me guys.

Got HBC and Gecko OS running on my FW 4.1E PAL Wii.

Problem: I have black edges on the left and right if I play No More Heroes US or MadWorld US. It looks like the picture is in 4:3 on my HDTV, how do I change Gecko OS and/or the HBC to 16:9 so that it will fit the whole screen?

I believe the extra stuff you need is DVDX which is part of the HackMii installer (used for BootMii and the HBC). It won't brick your Wii.

Do you have your Wii connected with component cables and set to 480p? If so, then try playing with the video settings in Gecko OS to make it work. I can't tell you exactly what to do, because it should just be working. If you haven't got it set to 480p with component cables, then do that as it's stupid not to when playing on an HDTV.

It was always set 480p with component cable connection to my HDTV.

Ok, so I've tried a few things:

Force NTSC = It works, but I still got black edges.
Force PAL 60 = It seems to load the disc, but then I get a green screen, the Wii remote get disconnected and it looks like the picture and/or the Wii freezed.
Force PAL 50 = the same thing just like with PAL 60.

So I tried the Wii-included cinch cable, but still, black edges with Gecko OS and No More Heroes. It seems like there's no solution for a 16:9 HDTV screen...

Every othe game like Super Paper Mario PAL Version fits perfect.

How do the games look in 4:3? Specifically check the width of the characters. This will determine whether it's Gecko OS or your TV that is the problem.

OK, I'm really, really dumb.

I wanted to play Rock Band : the Beatles, so I looked for the needed cIOS. Though, I wanted to check what was my wii's current IOS (I know I need the 249), and as I haven't installed these things for a while, I just thought any app would tell me. So I launched FUCKING IOS DOWNGRADER V1.1 - and not just "clicked", I mean "launched". No menu, of course, it's just going and... well, doing whatever it's supposed to do.

What have I done ?

(Shouldn't do these kind of things while I'm still not completely awaken :( )

As far as I can tell, it is meant to have a menu. It seems like you have just downgraded your Wii in some way. Good luck with that, hopefully you haven't bricked your Wii.
