Constantly freezing and random intervals sounds like a NAND on its death throws to me. It can also be a badly hacked Wii (downgrade have been known to cause issues like this but it is usually when the end user does something stupid too) but those tend to lock up consistently at the same place.
As for using someone elses bootmii as a restore. Take it as a last resort option. You will lose your Wii shop account (the donar might as well) and might not be able to get another one.
Sadly, Wiis don't have a "restory to factory settings". "But what about format?" I might hear you say. All that does is delete; Miis, Saves, Channels (but not their tickets meaning they can be re-downloaded through the Wii shop...if you delete Wii shop account that'll nuke the tickets) and basic settings like videomode etc. It keeps IOS, Firmware and other internals exactly the same as before the format.
