GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Backed up pikmin using the usbloader and it worked perfectly. However, Mad World froze during the back up process at about 37%. Anyone else have that issue?

Okay i got it installed on 4.0 using some method someone posted earlier in the thread.

I have a question though.

WTF is IOS and CIOS and how do i know which versions i need / have?

IOS = Input/Output System and is basically the mini-firmware/OS that is called by just about any app or game that you run on the Wii. IOSes are Nintendo-made, and many games come with new ones on-disc (typically because the game in question REQUIRES it to run). They are assigned numbers such as IOS36, IOS60, etc.

cIOS = custom IOS, the most popular of which is Waninkoko's cIOS36 rev10, which installs itself as a "fake" IOS249, a designation that Nintendo has not yet put into use. This particular cIOS comes with all kinds of goodies built in, such as homebrew USB2.0 drivers, homebrew SD card drivers, etc. Any modern version of USB Loader requires cIOS36 rev10, since they can load Wii disc game rips from either an SD card or an external USB drive.

Randomly had this issue with Ult. USB Loader. 2 of my then 54 games had failed partway, causing me to lose whatever HDD space it had eaten up before failing. Retrying them got them installed, however.

I've since wiped my HDD and reinstalled all (now) 60 games using Configurable USB Loader and had no hangs!

I'm just using a shitty MicroCenter usb thumb drive to sort of test it to make sure it worked so I am sure that didn't help. Since Pikmin worked I'll pick up a drive tomorrow.

Is there a way to transfer games you've already backed up (or at least attempted to, no idea if it worked or not) to the drive, or does it have to be ripped directly from the usb loader program?

There's some kind of WBFS Manager available for most OSes today.
If you're running Windows, I recommend WBFS Manager 3.0.1.
I linked to it a few posts up on this page.

Edit - Using it, you can extract the ISOs to your computer's HDD, and then reinstall them on a new device. Hell, I think it'll even allow you to clone the entire drive.

god dammit, it's still not working

Do you happen to have, by any chance, your Wii's internet settings as "Lan Adapter"?
That is a known bug (well, at least after I've wasted countless hours trying for everything!).
I couldn't have any USB Loader working until I completely removed (ie deleted) the Lan Adapter connection setting: If you can't set up a working wireless connection you'll be forced to just deleted everything AND block out both Wii Connect 24 and the internet connection agreement.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure usbloader isn't down with GPT Partitioning, which OSX uses these days.

When I formatted my drive on my Mac, I made sure to choose Master Boot Record for my partitioning scheme and everything is fine for me. Remove all of your partitions, click on options and see what it is set to. If it is Apple Partition Map or GUID Partition Map I don't think it'll work.

I also am going to say that I thought Ultimate USB Loader 7.4 (1.5) was the way to go until I tried Configurable USB Loader ver 30 - definitely the USB Loader of choice! Switch now!

Well I did the yafaze tutorial this morning with no issues then when I get home to tonight I will follow the rest of stumps and then get my hands on a HDD later

At this point the HBC channel is running so I think I'm good so far.

So I got Pikmin working fine, was able to back up another game no problem. However, I still am unable to update the homebrew channel past 0.9. Anyone have any idea why that might be?

Think I just broke my homebrew channel.

I did the TP hack on my launch Wii (with firmware 3.4U) some time ago and yesterday I thought I would prepare it for using USB loader. So I installed BootMii/boot2 using hackMii installer. I then installed cIOS rev10 and then upgraded my Wii to 4.0U. The thing is, homebrew channel ceased to work after that. When loading the channel, regardless if it is from BootMii or from the "real" Wii GUI, the Wii just displayed a blank/black screen.

So my question is. Can I install the homebrew channel again (with the help of Bannerbomb) or am I fucked?

Installed BootMii but I can't browse the menu with the power/reset/eject buttons.

Any reason why? I want to backup my NAND.

Also, my firmware is 3.3E. I want to downgrade to 3.2E. What is the safest and best way to do this?

I don't want to update to 4.0E just yet.

I DID have this set up! I thought for sure that would fix it, and maybe that was another issue, but it still didn't work. I think in light of the information that the 250 gig HDD of the same brand is incompatible with USB Loader, I really have no choice but to buy a new one. I just hope that in the end it's not my install that's messed up and that if I DO get a new HDD, it will work without any issues.

I got my homebrew channel back after having to remove it to send it to Nintendo for repairs. I was on firmware version 4.0 and I did it fairly easily with this guide. If it's a full reinstall you need, this should do it for you, and as long as you don't delete the apps folder, your HBC will be right back where it was when you lost it.

I've had absolutely no problems using various USB Loader versions and mods with my wired settings still in place. Now I've got both wired and wireless connections going, also without issue.

I was the biggest fan of Ult USB Loader v6-v7, but honestly, Cfg USB Loader v30 destroys it. It's everything Ult USB Loader used to be, and more.

Use the Hackmii (BootMii) Installer to install 1.0.2.

So I need to send my Wii in because of flashing pixels. I have the HBC on my 4.0U Wii. Do I just copy it to the SD card so Nintendo doesn't find it and then copy it back when I get my Wii back?

Fixed for clarity. I hate that it doesn't recognize my WaveBird.

My wavebird works. What gives?

My Wavebird works as well, but only if I power on the console with a Wii remote. The Wii remote can't control BootMii, but for some reason the Wii Remote power button lets my wavebird work. Wavebird does not work if I power on from the console.

I'm currently using a 4th gen 40gig iPod as my hdd. Working quite well too. I backed up my copies of Mario Kart and Brawl on there to try it. What other cool things can I do with a harddrive?

I also am having the unusually slow startup into BootMii as well. Currently using a 2GB SD card, I think made by Kingston? Purchased it around the time I bought the Wii.

(Originally was a 4.0U unmodded few-weeks-after-launch Wii, now with Homebrew Channel 1.0.2, DVDX and BootMii with use of Bannerbomb. Did the cIOS revisions recommended to have USBLoader work as well.)

You could have wired settings indeed, just not selected (I mean your default connection setup has to be the wi-fi one). If you don't have a chance to set-up a wireless connection though, you're forced to delete the LAN settings as well since otherwise that'll be selected by default.
With IOS rev10, I couldn't rip anything from the Wii DVD drive using any USB Loader, I've wasted countless hours because of that. I could play the games if I ripped them from a PC/Mac DVD drive, but there was no way I could rip them (Wii freezed at 5% or 45% mainly, having to power it off from the console itself.
It is (was?) a know bug, confirmed by the devs as well.

I didn't keep up with the new stuff though, I'm still at Ultimate USB Loader v7.

There's not bug in cIOS rev10 that causes consistent freezes during ripping/installation. Out of 54 rips I did using Ult USB Loader, only 2 failed for me using rev10. After wiping the drive and re-ripping all of my games (now 60) using Cfg USB Loader, I managed all 60 without a single failure.

Now it's true that rev10 is a little buggier than rev9, but nothing that can be considered 'broken.' Additionally, the initial version of rev10 uploaded by Waninkoko was broken, but he upped a fixed version within the hour. So long as you reinstalled rev10 with the fixed version (and don't try using 2 USB devices at once), you're basically good to go.

Also, if you're using an Ult USB Loader that's based on 1.2, 1.3, or 1.4, then that could also be your problem. Ripping/installing with any mod based on Waninkoko's 1.1-1.4 is a no-no. Something he did in his versions of USB Loader made ripping much slower and more prone to failure. 1.5 installs/rips faster and more reliably than even 1.1.

Long story short, I would highly recommend upgrading to cIOS rev10 and Configurable USB Loader v30 (which is based on Waninkoko's 1.5). It utterly destroys any and all versions of Ultimate USB Loader.

Edit - I had wired settings selected for most of my initial ripping and playing. No problems. I only added a wireless setting relatively recently.

Hey Gaf, I just brought home Punch Out for the first time and it's telling me I need to update to play. I'm currently running 3.3U (with hbc). Could someone guide me on how to update?

Little Mac is waiting! Thanks in advance

If you have HBC, you can update through the disc just fine!

Punch out update is A-o.k. and thanks to gecko I can finally play Disaster, and I have NO idea why this isn't released over here.

Yeah, there is Ilan (not only in CiosRev10 though, or not specifically if you get what I mean... alas I don't actually know what's causing the bug) but I understand you don't want to take my word for it :)
so:

Long story short-
1) I'm using Cios rev10, dunno why you advice me to go installing it again
2) If you just google for the bug I mentioned you'll see that is a known bug, it's not like I'm the only one that mentioned it (even in this very same thread!).
3) I couldn't install anything before, it always hanged on me with ANY of the Usb Loaders and with both Cios Rev9 and then rev10, as soon as I fixed the Lan connection problem I managed to install all of my 48 games without having it fail ONE time. Everything's super smooth, never a problem again. I tried before this post to revert once again to the Lan internet connection for my Wii to verify your statement and I tried to rip Little's King Story and Trauma Center:NB which I've just got this week: both times the Wii froze on me during installation at 3.3% and 44.3%.
4) The Ultimate USB Loader 7.3 I'm using it's based on Waninkoko's 1.5, never had a problem with it ;) at the moment I don't have the need to switch to configuarable v30 even if I understand it's a lot better than the previous versions... I'll wait for the next Cios Rev before deciding which one to use and then I'll be done for good with this, I've already spent too much time fiddling with Loaders, time that I could've spent actually playing the games.
5) Luckily, my HD doesn't have that "spin-down sleeping problem".
6) Your posts and infos in this thread, as well as all the help and tips you gave me, has been invaluable to me... so thanks again for all the hard work :)

Perhaps I should have worded it such:
There's no bug in cIOS36 rev10 that independently causes consistent rip/installation failures with USB Loader and its various mods; that is, fully breaks ripping and installing. I know that there are issues with USB Loader and cIOS36; I've already mentioned that both are variously buggy, moreso than other versions even.

There's very clearly certain combinations of apps/settings that do, however, break features, and currently we have to work around them. I didn't mean to imply that these bugs/incompatibilities didn't exist, only that they're not absolute! (Which is probably what's making it tricky to stamp them out!)

As to advising people (not you specifically) to install rev10 again, I only mention it as a possible solution because there are bad/broken versions of the rev10 installer floating around out there. If you've downloaded a known/confirmed working version from a trusted source, then obviously that's not your issue.

For what it's worth, I just deleted a game from my HDD, made my wired ethernet settings the default, and successfully installed the game again using cIOS36 rev10 and Cfg USB Loader v30. No freeze. No hang-up. I did keep the LAN adapter unplugged though, since it's known that you can't have two USB devices hooked up and working with cIOS36 rev10 (or rev9 either, for that matter). So, the point I was trying to make before still stands. Rev10 is not innately broken for installs.

x86 if you're on a 32-bit OS, x64 if you're on a 64-bit OS.
If you don't know what you're using, it's probably 32-bit.

Funnily, the multiple devices thing is possibly selective too. I discovered the other day that my games still worked with Configurable while a USB hub that has my wireless keyboard and mouse was plugged in (A KVM switch).

However, I also had plenty of crashes while installing games back with Configurable, but back then it was only v17 or something.

Thanks, that program is super impressive. I don't know how much you've played around with it, but what is the Wii Channel button? Can I make each game on the hard drive it's own channel (that would be amazing).

Last questsion, GC games? Any way to backup and load them the same way?

Wii gets downclocked to a GCN when running a GCN game.
GCNs don't have USB ports.

As for the channel creator, yes, I'm pretty sure this'll allow you to convert any Wii game to a channel. I haven't played around with it, though.

I currently use an HDD forwarder channel to launch Cfg USB Loader. I prefer that to having one channel per game.

Clipper: I believe the dude who maintains Cfg USBL is working on getting Kwirk's/Hermes' CIOS222 and CIOS223 properly supported. One, or both, of those allow multiple USB devices. I think everyone's pretty sick of waiting for rev11 to hit.

http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/index.php/USB_Loader_Releases

Find your USB Loader mod in that list above, and scroll down to where you see "Wii Channel Download." If one's available for your mod of choice, download it. If it's not listed there, use this same list to get to the mod's home page (usually a forum thread) and see if one's listed in the OP there.

Once you have your channel forwarder wad, drop it into the wad folder of your sd card (x:/WAD) and install it using WAD Manager 1.4, or some such.

That's it. It should be in your Wii's channel menu. Drag and drop it wherever you want. So long as you have your mod installed on your sd card according to specs, the forwarder channel will find it and launch it for you, circumventing the HBC entirely.

It's actually very simple/easy, once you do it once.

Yeah, some of the WBFS managers do the channel stuff for you. However, consider how annoying it's going to be to get that stuff off your Wii or reinstall all those channels if a new update comes out that breaks fake channels. It's not that much trouble to click through HBC and on to a USB Loader or use the forwarder app to install USB Loader as its own channel.

Plus there's the point that I don't have enough channel space for my games :p.

Yeah, I've got 60 games installed already. No way in hell I'm making channels for even a fraction of them. USB Loader HDD Forwarder channel ftw.

That was simple...thanks!

I was asking about channels since I was going into HBC, scrolling all the way to the right, then getting into the loader. It was a pain. This is WAY better.

Told ya!
It probably took me longer to type that up than it did for you to actually install it.
Works pretty awesome, no?

Edit - There's also a trick for reordering goodies in the HBC, by editing the accompanying meta.xml files, IIRC. You can adjust the names that show up on the HBC, and since it sorts in alphabetical order, it's pretty easy to manage.

This is pretty much my first time monkeying with it, I could never get it working right previously and never had much of a reason to. I use my systems 10x more when I have all my games accessible without fucking around with discs. This will get my Wii used a ton more.

How much space are these games using on your hard drive so far? I'm thinking of getting a 250 GB Seagate Free Agent Go Portable Drive for $70 off newegg.

Something like 125GBs of my Seagate FreeAgent Go's 500GBs. I forget the exact number.
Great drive. I got mine for about $90, brand new, and I've seen 320GBs for roughly what you've quoted for the 250GB. Food for thought.

Only 72 Gigs for my collection of 35 Disc games. I say you are good to go!

I have a 320GB WD My Passport. it is 80 USD at CompUSA.

Don't WD hard drives have issues? I've been reading about them failing or something. Can you clear this up for me before I dive in and buy one? I don't mind the type of hd I buy as long as I know it won't screw up on me :p

WD HDDs are some of the best you can buy dude! The My Passport 320GB has my full recommendation.

http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3952296&CatId=2424

You can even find it cheaper in-store, and some targets have them for 70 USD!

I bought a WD Passport 400GB for like $55 a few months ago, crack opened the enclosure and put it in my PS3, then used my PS3 80GB HDD into the enclosure and used it for my Wii HDD. Works great, about 74GB of HDD space which is plenty of space. I've had no problems whatsoever, and I'm sure the original 400GB HDD Passport should serve no problem.

I think it's funny though that I'm using my PS3 HDD for my Wii.

Is this the 400 GB you bought by any chance? I wish it were a little cheaper.

I can't get the USB Loader to install my games. I've tried both the Ultimate loader and the Configurable Loader. What happens is that it will freeze/crash sooner or later during an installation. Punch-Out!! failed after about 2.50% and Blast Works failed at 34% or so. I guess it could be my HDD since it's pretty old by now. It's some Maxtor 120GB I've used in my PS2 before this.

I have cIOS36 rev 10 installed and I formatted the HDD with WBFS Manager 3.0.

Edit: I tried a USB thumb drive and it found it, formatted and it crashed during install. I think my cIOS is fucked or something. I get "Exception (DSI) occurred!". Doesn't sound too good.

Get the Homebrew app that lets you connect to the internet and select off-the-shelf emulators and other cool apps. With that, it's almost too easy.

Having some issues with Punch-Out and the Configurable USB Loader. Everything runs fight until I reach a title fight, and then the Wii hard locks (sometimes with an unhandled exception, sometimes just a freeze). Any ideas?

I'm using an older Western Digital 250GB My Book, formatted into one partition. Game plays off the disc fine. Bad dump possibly?
