GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

What is the difference between cIOS 222 and 223? I know that 222 fixes the spindown issue, but does 223 do that plus add support for USB instruments or something? Tracking down a feature list for these things has been tough.

Apparently they are just two alternatives for the same thing, although I keep hearing 223 seems to fix more issues for more people.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I loaded both just in case. Ran Boom Blox with cIOS 222 last night, and it didn't lock up on me for the first time! Finally I don't regret getting my WD drive.

Hm, I wonder if they fixed SD Card channel bugs with Bootmii 2. Whenever I try and load the SD Card Channel, it freezes on me. I guess I'm going to need to put it on another SD card.

Darn my head spins from all the IOS and cIOS versions :)

Anyway, I have HBC installed through Zelda hack and latest 4.0E (I believe) Wii firmware on my machine. USB Loader works and I use SD Card for 2 VC games I have.

Now I would like to install BootMii, What is the easiest way to do it and to get most out of it?

Also is there a mod/hack that will remove that "strap-controller-to-your-hand" screen before a game starts? Drives me mad :P

Thank you for your time!

so bootmii is cube controller only ? will there ever be wiimote support ?

Easiest way would be through HBC, download bootmii beta 2, put it in your apps, run from HBC. follow the on screen instructions. With bootmiibeta2, it doesn't format your SD card, so you don't have to worry about the files on the SD card, but id back it up just to be safe. once you run the bootmii installer and its successful, power off the wii and then back on, you should see the bootmii screen now. I would go ahead and backup your NAND (4th opition, then 1st opition, (should be a green arrow pointing to a SD card)) once you back up your NAND, id go ahead and put the SD card back into your PC, rename the bootmii folder to something else that way the wii will boot directly to the system menu.

not sure about wiimote support, but you can always use the buttons on the wii itself

Power button moves to the right, and Reset is enter.

I have the latest Homebrew Browser (0.3.1) and I get the error that my SD card isn't inserted properly and it kicks me back out to HBC (1.0.3). Doesn't HBB work with SDHC cards? Or is it a matter of having to downgrade something on my 4.0U Wii?

Will this install bootmii to boot2 or IOS? as I'm reading differences between the two and boot2 sure sounds better

It gives you the option to do either (you can also do both).

Only the pre-3.4 version of the DVDx installer allows you to use the 'Advanced' option, which lets you select your own custom IOS for DVDx to run on. The post-3.4 version of DVDx does not have this 'Advanced' option.

You need the trucha bug in the early IOS files for the pre-3.4 DVDx installer to work. So even if you are on firmware 4.0, if you run 'IOS Downgrader', then you will have the trucha bug back and you can then run the pre-3.4 DVDx installer.

So run 'IOS Downgrader' (this will reset a bunch of IOS files to their earlier trucha bug versions), then install the USB2.0-cIOS beta3 (install as IOS202 using IOS36), then run the pre-3.4 DVDx installer and select the 'Advanced' option, and then select IOS202 in the 'Advanced' option. Now DVDx will run on IOS202 when you use it.

Do I have to install custom IOSes before upgrading to 4.0? That's basically my question right now. I want to download some Virtual Console stuff but I'm on 3.3 with HBC already installed as well as BootMii.

I've downloaded the hackmii installer 2 and stuck it in the apps folder, but I cant seem to get the thing to show up on the Homebrew channel at all. The hackmii installer folder doesn't appear to have a .dol file at all, is this the problem?

like linkhero said, but its actually an .elf file I believe. so rename it boot.elf

I'm about install Bootmii but I'm still not clear on whether or not I can use the same SD card my apps and stuff is on or if I need to use a seperate card with this?

Not sure the exact answer but I used the same card and had no problems.

With beta2 you can use the same card. Id back it up just in case anything happens. and if you don't want bootmii to load every time you turn on your wii just rename the folder.

Thanks, I renamed it it and now I have bootmii up and running. I also installed DVDX with it, is there anyway to tell if it has installed? Also, I backed up the Wii's NAND memory on my SD card and while it was doing so it found some 'factory bad block marker's, though they cleared when it was verifying. Is that a problem or nothing to worry about?

EDIT: By some I mean 4. 84, 857, 2545 and 3560 if that means anything.

Thanks, just started and Jesus my Wii has a ton of bad blocks is the NAND. I hope this isn't too abnormal :/

when you load bootmii installer, does it say uninstall dvdx? if so you have it. as for Badblocks, nothing to worry about, you can have as little as one or in my case over 20. these were factory badblocks, so they were bad before you even opened your wii.

Yep, I've got it. Does it actually turn the Wii into a DVD player then? I can't see where it allows me to run DVDs. Not that I'd use the Wii for that really, just curious.

You would need a media player app to play the DVDs, like MPlayer CE.

Forgotten to delete the Bannerbomb from the sd-card have we?

You could always use the same card, you just couldnt use the same card for the NAND backup.

Also, my 8gb SDHC card, that broke out of nowhere using Homebrew Browser and HBC v 1.0.1, now works again with 1.0.3!

Yeah thats what I meant, even though thats not what I said. :)

Woo beta2 was it. Was able to install onto boot2 :D So now... what can I do with this ? Backing up the NAND, does that mean I can downgrade if I go to 4.0?

It means you can save your ass if you fuck up your wii. (if you backup)

you could install onto boot2 with beta2, but not with the first version ?

So having downgraded a long time ago using the Twilight Hack, I'm on 3.2 now. What is the process of updating to 4.0 and still being able to use all the homebrew stuff? Bannerbomb?

Yeah - install cIOS rev10 before you do anything.

Are you on 3.3v1 or 3.3v2 (pre-Oct 23/08 or post-Oct 23/08)? They both show up as the same firmware on your Wii system settings, so it is difficult to know which version of 3.3 you have. If you have 3.3v1 then it will be really easy to update. If you are on 3.3v2, then some extra steps will be necessary.

Anyway, get waninkoko's cIOS rev10 and try to install it. If it won't install, then you are on 3.3v2. If it does install properly, then you are on 3.3v1, and just follow these next few steps.

- Install 'cIOS rev10'
- Update your Wii to 4.0 using Nintendo's official updater from your system settings
- Run 'IOS Downgrader' (this will revert many IOS files back to earlier versions that still have the trucha bug - just make sure to run 'IOS Downgrader' and not 'cIOS Downgrader')
- you can now follow my earlier instructions for installing USB2.0 cIOS (beta3) and installing IOS202, and then running the pre-3.4 version of the DVDx installer and using the 'Advanced' option in order to set DVDx to run off of IOS202. That way it will work with MPlayer.

What's the purpose of using IOS downgrader? If I dont do this step, what stuff is being blocked?

It resets a bunch of IOS files back to their original forms, before Nintendo started patching them with the 3.3v2 system update. The original forms of these IOS files contained the trucha bug, which allows for code to be 'fakesigned' so that the Wii thinks it is official Nintendo code, even though it is not. With 3.3v2 and higher system updates, Nintendo has been patching the trucha bug out of those early IOS files.

At this point, most homebrew stuff runs off of cIOS files, so you may not have any need to use IOS Downgrader. But it doesn't hurt to run it (the IOS files will still work just fine after using IOS Downgrader), and there is still some homebrew stuff that needs the trucha bug to be active in those early IOS files.

Stuff like AnyTitleDeleter will require the trucha bug. Also, installing DVDx to run on IOS202 so that it can be used by MPlayer will require the trucha bug in order to use the 'Advanced' (pre-3.4) version of DVDx.

And then there is stuff like modified games that also use the trucha bug. So if you modified your game disc so that you can play the uncencored version of Manhunt 2, or if you modified your Guitar Hero disc so that you added your own songs to the game. Those modified games use the trucha bug to run.

Also, the trucha bug is needed to install some stuff like the USB2.0-cIOS that I mentioned earlier that installs IOS202.

So depending on your homebrew needs, you may not need to run IOS Downgrader, but it still has a fair share of uses. But you need to have waninkoko's cIOS installed before you can run 'IOS Downgrader'.

Right, how do I make my HBC auto-update to 1.0.3?
There's no way to do that, as the auto-update thing doesn't work on 4.0, I believe. Only way to get the new version is to use the BootMii beta 2 installer. If you are still on 1.0.1 (pre BootMii), there is no need to update, though.

Edit: Whoa. HBC just asked me to update on the second time I ran it this morning, so 1.0.3 has been added to the update server, I guess. I'm still on 3.2, so I don't know if the same will happen for 4.0 users.

OK, this is even more of a whoa. The HBC auto-update actually gives you the BootMii beta2 installer! I wasn't going to update to BootMii yet, but I guess I might as well :).

Ok, Gridflow rocks.

Indeed. For those interested, cfg31b essentially has Coverflow (not quite as snazzy, but virtually the same) now.

I found a bug that it won't work if you have your default IOS set to something other than IOS249, but oggzee will fix it soon.
