GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

1) No conflicts. I have the newest BootMii and the newest Priiloader (Preloader is discontinued) installed. All good.

2) If you upgrade to the newest Bootmii and HBC before upgrading to 4.2, they won't get zapped by the 4.2 update (if you update using official channels). It'll just save you some grief later to update those first.

3) If it's been that long, your cIOSes are probably long obsolete. Just download and install the newest ones. They'll install right over the existing ones.

Thanks a lot.

Ok I just installed BootMii using the guide and it appear works in that I see it on the screen...except my wiimote no longer works and just flashes. I cant navigate or do nothing.

Have you tried using a GCN controller?

Also, I have BootMii and Preloader on my Wii and everything seems fine.

I thought Bootmii doesn't have Wiimote support?
Use a GCN controller or the reset/power buttons on the console to navigate. (Or something. I forget).
Might want to configure it to autoload the SysMenu, though.

do any of the wii emulators support that tatsunoko vs campom aracde stick? the guy who works at EB games told me it doesnt work with virtual console games :(

So I converted my hard drive to FAT32 (from WBFS) and moved all my homebrew onto it.
My SD card now only has the "private" folder that the Wii generates when you copy channels to the SD card.

Now I'd like to get rid of the SD card completely. I've got a lot of WiiWare/VC stuff, but nowhere near enough to justify dedicating an 8 GB SDHC card to it. And I'd really like to be able to load all of my VC/WiiWare shit without having to rely on the background transfer to the Wii.

So there's SNEEK and Triiforce for NAND emulation, as far as I can tell.
How the hell do these work? I tried to get Triiforce working but it just shat on me, and SEEK just looks painful.

If I got one of these working, is there any way to get my stuff from my SD card to my NAND dump without doing the following?:
  • SD->Wii transfer
  • New NAND dump
  • Merge stuff from NAND dump into original NAND dump
  • Repeat until SD card is empty

That would probably take more time than I'd ever save by having quick access to my VC/WiiWare. Unless there's something simple that I'm missing that makes NAND emulation easy (and functional...), I'll probably just give up.

Something that might be easier to solve - how do I tell the homebrew channel to mount my USB hard drive first, and not the SD card? I've moved all my homebrew to the usb drive, but the homebrew channel still mounts the SD card when I load it up. It's only a couple button presses to get it to mount the USB drive, but it's still bugging me.

It should be said that Triiforce's compatibility is far from perfect, so it's far from an ideal replacement even if you get it working.

The guy is an idiot/misinformed then. :P
Think of the stick as a giant Classic Controller (because that's basically what it is, haha). If the game can use the CC, the stick will work. So VC, Wii games, Homebrew emulators, whatever works with the CC will work with the TvC stick.

I believe the only way is to unplug the SD card.

As for the other question, UNEEK (USB version of SNEEK) is a little confusing to me too. I'm letting it mature a bit more before I take the plunge.

We're having a couple of issues with the USB Configurable Loader.. the first we've had in a long time. Upon trying to load it up a week ago (after the purchase of Mario Galaxy 2), it just hangs.

It won't even attempt to mount the drive, the application itself just freezes. I've tried a couple different SD cards, in case one of them was corrupt, but it's the same issue with each. The HDD itself appears to be okay. My partition is shown by WBFS on Windows, and we can play movies with the media player off the FAT32 partition.

Any clue what it might be? We haven't toyed with any IOS changes, or other system changes recently. Just a lot of Monster Hunter (off disc) and Mario Galaxy play.

SMG 2 includes a 4.2 update on the disc. This stubs the IOSes. Use the instructions in the tutorial to reinstall IOS249 and IOS222/223 (there are special instructions for upgrading after an update).

Also, you should update Cfg. 57b7 is the latest release and there's been stub detection that would have told you the error since 57b.

I should have figured. Thanks for the tip.

Whats the easiest way to make Bootmii auto boot USB Configurable Loader?
It can only autoboot to the HBC. You could put a .dol on the SD that the BootMii stub will detect and execute and have that launch Cfg, though, I guess.

In any case, I instead recommend that you boot to the Wii Menu and use a forwarder to launch Cfg. That's what I do and it means you can do stuff like enabling play logging so that your Wii Message Board and Nintendo Channel actually see your play time.

is it safe to install wads on other ios other than 249?
It depends. What do you want to install?

I've tried a few times to update my ios249 with rev19 on base 37. but each time the installation does not complete and it will say error! (ret = -1)

I've looked on the great wii homebrew tutorial and it says that this is a common problem if you are on firmware 4.2? and to use any title deleter to delete a bumch of ios' 249 250 222 223

However I am on firmware 4.1E. is it still safe for me to use Any title deleter mod to do that? and do I use IOS236 to run ATDM?
and I can then reinstall 249 250 222 223 properly?
(hermes222 or 223 has never worked for anything for me I'm pretty sure. I just get '...' and it stays there forever)

I'm not exactly a whizz with this stuff and I'm pretty worried about deleting anything on the wii.

I can tell you that it makes no sense to do 7 "beta" releases if you want users to update to those betas. I'll upgrade from 56 to 57 when 57 is released.

Hey, just a stupid question. Aonuma confirmed there will be no left handed mode for the new Wii Zelda. Would it be possible for the homebrew community to write a patch to flip the Y-axis, which would then make the game easier to play for a lefty? I don't even know if it's possible to do.

Yes, the 4.2 updated by Nintendo steps are safe for any Wii. Do those.

It's still in beta because the only person that can do a full release has been moving house and unable to do so. The current version is likely to become the release version anyway (there may be one more release to add full screen previews of themes).

One thing to note about Cfg is that virtually every release is stable, even the alphas and betas. If there's features that are dangerous or we don't think are fully implemented, then those are marked as experimental (with the suffix x) or test (with the suffix t) instead.

You mean the X-axis (flipping the Y-axis would be upside-down)? And I seriously doubt you'll notice any difference between left and right anyway. Miyamoto's a lefty isn't he? If he didn't like the way it felt, he'd be upending some tea tables. Try playing WSR swordplay with your setting set to right handed and see how it feels.

On your question, though, it's not going to be possible with any current homebrew, and I seriously doubt any future homebrew would work either. Plus, you do realise that any such feature would also mirror all the text...

Anyone else getting "Your System Files Are Corrupted" messages lately? I keep getting them every time I exit Netflix (or restart the system just after using Netflix).

I'm somewhat suspicious that due to this issue, it's just some internal file mangled, and that it might be easier to attempt to fix on my own rather than sending it in...

This seems to be related to certain Nintendo IOSes being different to those expected. Using Dop-Mii to update all your IOSes to the latest versions without patches might fix the issue.

Yeah, X-axis.

Miyamoto is left handed but uses the wiimote in his right. I don't. There's also no hand options for WSR swordplay because the Miis hold the sword in both hands.

Also, I'd have a much easier time reading backwards text. I do it naturally. I'm serious about that.

I know it was a stupid question. Thanks for answering.

Easier? Really? Wow... I have no trouble reading backwards text, but I must admit I do find it a little less easy than reading forward text. Although perhaps you meant you find it easier than most other people? Ambiguity is tricky that way...

The reason why I brought up Swordplay was that Link seemed to be holding the sword in exactly the same position as it was held in Swordplay. He might only be using one hand, but the sword position seemed to be almost smack dab in front of him. Thus the only difference is which hand you see the sword coming from and a slight change in angle. It shouldn't be too hard to get over that, especially if you focus on the sword tip rather than Link's hand.

Anyway, it's an argument for the other thread, I guess.

Hmm... I just realised that there is one solution to your problem, but you are probably not going to like it... All projectors allow a mirror mode, so if you get one of those, then that will do the flip for you. However, there is still the problem that the controls will now operate in the reverse direction. I don't think there's a non-mechanical fix for that...

Well, the way I look at it is that any "versioning" scheme is arbitrary. Whether you guys were on version 2.2.1 or version 57, it doesn't really matter. I just figure that some of your x->x+1 releases have added only very minor stuff, so it's not like you're scared to increment the version number without having enough big meaty features. Knowing that it's just a team member issue makes much more sense though. Keep on truckin'.

Hey - someone actually knows something. That's a nice change for once.

As far as I can tell, everything is up to date and system perfect; that's why I've been scratching my head about this. What IOS does Netflix use? Is there anyplace with information on this specific problem?

Any problems with hacking a Black Wii to region free? I'm guessing they have the latest firmware?

My dying GPU's pixel errors have been getting worse and worse playing Xenoblade (I think that game pushes the Wii gpu harder than anything else) and it's really bugging me. Very tempted to go pick up a black US wii at the store today to replace my JP wii but since all my games are JP I need to be able to get gecko running on it.

Thanks for the reply Clipper.

In the tutorial is says to use IOS236 as the base for using ATDM, but that option isn't available for me when I run ATDM. the Only IOS's in the 200's that I can choose are 222 223 249 250 and 254. should I use 254?
not sure why I don't have 236.

You must not of followed the preceding steps correctly. The TBR steps will install a patched version of IOS36 into the IOS236 slot. Perhaps you accidentally overwrote your existing 36 instead? To correct, Just run the preceding steps again. You might want to install an unpatched IOS36 back into the IOS36 slot when you are done just to make sure it's back to normal, too..

woops. I tried to do the ATDM steps without doing the Trucha bug restorer first.

When I do try to do the trucha bug steps however to downgrade IOS15 etc., it fails to install. or says exception! and has a code dump.
I'm pretty sure I haven't overwritten 36 in the past or now tho.

Just got my new Black Wii a day ago. Today I bought a SD card and a external hdd. I had a wee during the release months but sold it as it collected dust, got really hyped by Kirby and such on E3 this year so bought a new one. Also got to read that you can make the Wii regionfree and install your games on a external usb device (hdd). This to me sounds wonderful as it's a pain switching discs.

Now my only question is what file system my partition for the Wii should be when using configurable usb loader? People seem to say different things... I'm guessing NTFS doesn't work?

Make sure you are using the latest version of TBR and follow the steps very carefully. I haven't seen anyone have trouble with those steps when following them properly. If you are trying the online install, it might be better to try the offline method, though.

I updated wii to 4.2 today using the method listed in the wiki. Now I am at the part where I need to reinstall IOS249. wiki says to follow numbered instructions under "Updating IOS249 to a different version". It says I need AnyTitle Deleter Mod v6b. I go to the site and they no longer have it. is there an alternate site for that?

I tried the TBR steps again today and this time it all went fine even tho everything was exactly the same as yesterday. I did have to try the restore IOS15 step a couple of times as I kept getting a http error when trying to download from NUS. but it eventually downloaded properly.

Then when trying to install IOS249 with rev19 I kept getting the same download error! (ret = -1) that I was getting originally. So I tried using the WUFE program to download the parts I need from a wii DVD instead of doing a network install. when I ran WUFE it just said 'SD error'.

so I reformatted my SD card. tried the IOS249 rev19 app again and it worked perfectly straight away.
so it was my SD card the whole time. the fucking thing.

what a relief.

Ugh, that's a tad annoying. With this, I think it will finally be time to transition to using IOS236 for all installs. Just do the TBR steps of the 4.2 updated by Nintendo Wiis (don't bother with the ATD stuff) and choose IOS236 to install both IOS249 and IOS222/223. I'll update the tutorial to match soon.

I have the Any Title Deleter Mod zip saved on my PC, I can send it to one of you guys to host it somewhere (dont have any account on the file hosting sites).

Oh there was one weird thing I wanted to ask about here. I've updated safely to 4.2 and did the 2v4 update as well for boot2. However, when I put the Mario Galaxy 2 disc in, it still wanted to update. Any idea why? (It boots fine from USBLoader, so I don't really care, I'm just a bit curious.)

Thanks, but no thanks. I've been meaning to remove the need for AnyTitle Deleter since the latest version of TBR came out.

SMG 2 is the first game to have a 4.2 update. It will stub your cIOSes if you run it (and the fact that the cIOS versions are less than the stubs is the reason why it asks). You should probably use StartPatch to block disc updates.

Ahhh, makes sense.

I only put discs in my Wii to rip them, then they go up on the shelf. :P

Well, asides from Tri, just in case Capcom are able to tell I'm running from HDD and are actually banning people using USBLoader.

Completely unfounded rumour, but since it's literally the only game I play online, it can sit in the Wii. The load times would be about the same anyway from HDD whilst online, since the game is negotiating with the server anyway.

Yup same thing happened to me, you have to do the patch to block disc updates or you will have to re-install bootmii, cIOS, the works.

Better safe than sorry.

I forgot the game has to negotiate with a server so yeah they can probably tell if you're running off a disc or not.

Really? I'm pretty sure that if you are already at 4.2 and have boot2v4 then the only thing you need to do is reinstall the cIOSes if you run the SMG2 update. It should ignore boot2 as it is already at its latest version. Hmm, I might test this myself...

Edit: Oops, forgot I imported SMG 2 for a minute there. I'm unable to test it myself, but I'm pretty sure Bootmii is safe as it shouldn't attempt to update boot2.

Just bought myself a hard drive yesterday and decided to set my Wii up for USB loading. After having installed the homebrew channel previously there wasn't a lot left to do but following the awesome guide made it so easy! Thanks guys! One thing I was wondering - while playing I noticed the Wii's blue disc light flash on and off a few times while loading - what does this mean? Thanks again!

bought mario galaxy 2, ran update, USB loader no longer works.

Followed guide, USB loader now works, but Mario Galaxy 2 shows up as 'system update' again so I can't run the game.

What do I need to do now so I can run mario galaxy but keep the USB loader?

Reading the post 8 posts before yours would have helped. You need to block disc updates.

I'm usually a good boy, honest. This Wii stuff just does my head in.

I ended up just ripping the disc to the HDD so I don't need it. will do that disc blocking thing anyway though.

if it helps, I did the 4.2 upgrade off disc, and it only stopped the USB loader from working. Homebrew channel was still ok, so your guide worked fine just updating IOS249. Didn't use the deleter as it wasn't available from the linked site.
