GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Any news on Dios Mios? Wasn't it supposed to release in October?

Project is dead I think. The creator wanted money and no one sent donations so his thoughts were that no one was interested in such a project.

So my wii has had the black glitching problem for quite some time now and its just gotten to the point of unplayable. I want to send it in to Nintendo but I do have homebrew installed? Do I try to virginize it or do they even bother checking for it? I would of course remove any hints of homebrew from the channels but I'm not sure if I need to go all the way with it.

I've tried to find an answer to this myself but I've been told so many different stories that it pretty much equate to not being about to wipe the system clean at all unless your created a nand backup before every putting homebrew on your console to begin with.

I'm out $800 if my Wii console ever dies. Some people claim that just by using the banner bomb alone somehow Nintendo can detect it that you used it. Personally I hate the fact that the Homebrew channel even logs anything since it is so useless for them to do so in the first place. But apparently there is more to it and no one want to talk about how to properly do it even though there must be some way to do so regardless of a nand back up or not.

My wii crashed while playing DKC3 the other day (genuine VC game, not snes9x). Glitched horribly and froze up.

UH OH.

My Wii crashed twice, once after a game of madden 08 and again when I beat Wily in Mega Man 3. It happen on my first play when the game was first release on VC. Does your crash happen often? I have the DCK3 game but I've yet to play it much.

Hm, okay, using DOP-shop wouldn't connect to my network, so I followed the procedure to use DOP-Mii instead. It said that it installed the shop channel fine, but when I try to go into the shop channel I get a blue-screen error and a "eject the game disc and power off" message.
I got that too at some point, don't remember during which process. Try reinstalling, or see if DOP-shop will connect to your network this time.

I have a bit of a quick question.

Using Configurable USB Loader, ripping one of my games to the HDD as we speak. However I am noticing that there are two lines saying WARNING: read error (-2) and a large number every now and then.

Obviously this is due a dirty disc, but do you guys recommend I clean the disc and try to re-rip, or is it safe to just leave it.

Also, not sure how up to date the Wii Homebrew is, but is Metroid Prime Trilogy, MK Armageddon or any other dual layer games playable with USB Loader yet?

Is it possible to receive gifts from the shop channel if I'm not on the latest system menu? First I tried updating the shop channel, but that didn't seem to help, so then I updated to 4.2 (I was still on 3.3 all the time). But still no gift notification even though it should have been sent days ago. Should I try updating to 4.3, or could the problem be with something else?

I am trying to install StartPatch 4.2 after having run the Safe Upgrade from 4.1U. When I select IOS 236, I get the error message ISFS open error error -106. Where do I go from here?

Is there even a reason not to update to 4.3 if you have the latest HBC and everything else? If not, shouldn't the thread title be changed?

Hm, I just tried re-installing with DOP-shop and I got a error making http request error. Sound familiar to anyone?

total noob here..
I installed the HBC, ios 236, and ios 222/223 (hermes). Everything good so far. I can't access Wii shop. I install dop-shop and try to update the wii channel, using ios 222 (in that menu). It installs for a little while (v20), reboot, try again, no cookie. I vaguely read on the internet that I need 246 (aren't 222 and 246 'concurrents'?).

I tried to install it, it crashes as soon as I press A.

:/

Am I not supposed to try to install 222/233 and 246 at the same time? Is there a way to make the wii channel 'work' (i get error 002)?

Thanks for any help :)

nevermind, I was not reading the instructions correctly. I am installing 249 now, hopefully it all works out.. :)

edit: Hash BAD when I try to dop-shop to v20 using 249

It's a shame because SNES9XGX runs fantastically... The game I was playing was Megaman Zero games. Apparently, VBA GX runs GBC/GB games great, so that's good to know.

Dragona isn't a mod anymore? :(

RIP to the best

The only two games that gave me this issue were Wii Sports and Silent Hill. Silent Hill is damaged but My Wii Sports disc is mint. The odd thing is that Wii Sports installs fine (minus the -2 read errors) but when I select the game the disc channel music doesn't play but the game itself works fine. My Wii Sports disc is an American copy but I noticed under the disc that it was made in Japan. While the other ones that I have from later Wii purchases are from the USA. Silent Hill is just badly scratched thanks to a broken Wii that was given to me so I have to pony up the dough to get a replacement.

Off topic:

This is a bit off topic but can anyone recommend a disc resurfacer that may help repair the disc. The scratch isn't deep but the Wii left one heck of a circular scuff on the outer edge.

If the game works, you're probably OK. If it doesn't, you know what's to blame. Dual layer games have worked for ages. The only dual layer games are MPT, SSBB, Other M and MH3. All those games work fine except MPT which only works via the alternative dol method, needs cheats in order to choose difficulty and forces you to use the first save slot. MK Armageddon is a single layer game, but also needs the alternative dol technique.

You need to use an IOS that is able to support USB peripherals (due to it supporting Wii Speak). Thus, the IOS you use to play the game must use IOS37 or IOS56 as its base. The current tutorial gives you IOS249 as base 56, which should work fine.

They should work properly. Do you have WiiConnect24 enabled? Are the country settings of you and your gift-giver's Wiis the same?

Reinstall IOS236 and try again.

Yes. Updating to 4.3 makes it very hard to fix things if you accidentally go and delete the HBC or something else. It also doesn't help you remove update attempts as the 4.2 and above updates will still try to correct your IOS222 and IOS249, even if you are already on 4.3. These problems are only minor ones, but there is no benefit to updating, so they tip the balance in the favour of not updating.

Did you install the latest version of 236 according to the tutroial? Also, try using IOS222 as it should work too.

Yeah, I installed IOS236 with the v5 installer and it ran without problems. Will give 222 a shot, though. Will double check 236 just in case I missed something.

I have a problem. My Wii has a nasty habit of freezing up. I modded it because it was so far past warranty but now I'm sick of the freezing and the new 25th Anniversary Wii's are looking pretty tasty. What I want to know is: if I send both Wii's to Nintendo to do a license swap, will they have grounds to deny my request, seeing as I have evidence of soft-modding? When I first modded it, I made a backup of the NAND as it was, and I have since bought new stuff from Wiiware. If I were to revert the NAND back to the way it was, will I still have a license to the stuff I bought after modding?

Just got Kirby's Epic Yarn from the USA, and while it plays fine using Gecko OS on my 4.3 PAL Wii, the game doesn't show up in the usual channel... Not a big deal, just curious as to why that would be and if there's any benefit to try and fix it?

Trying to install A Boy And His Blob US retail disc to Configurable USB Loader Ver 60 on a Japanese wii 4.1J

Game appears to install and is selectable but does not work and neither does the boot game disc option.

Been Googling and see this game does cause problems.

Is there a solution?

Play with some of the options in configurable. I think there are some to force the language (country or something like that) as I have a feeling the system is trying to get Japanese language data off the disc...which of course does not exist resulting in the failure to boot.

@Starwolf_UK

Good call - forcing the game to PAL50 or 60 makes it boot.

Downside side is the game is not progressive.

50 Hz - 575i

60 Hz - 480i

You are going to need to test the various video mode options. Try various configurations of the video patch, vidtv and country patch options. Also, the language option might be confusing things. Try some other values of that too.

Edit: Oops, missed the new page of posts :S.

Hmm... Only the PAL modes work? That's very strange. What is the ID of the game (the 6 character code displayed on the game's option page near the title)? Also, try setting both 'video' to 'ntsc' and 'video patch' to 'all'

Game ID SBLE5G

Force NTSC and video patch to ALL results in black screen and needs reset.

Connection is wii component to DVDO Edge Video Processor to HDMI monitor.

Very strange indeed. I can only suggest trying out the other options too. lannguage, vidtv and country patch could all possibly fix things. There might just be a weird incompatibility, though.

I don't know if this is the right topic to be posting this in, but does anyone know where the download for glovepie has gone? I really want to hook up my wiimote so I can play flash/indie games.

Could anyone give me the lowdown on how to get everything working? I have successfully connected my Wiimote to my PC, but beyond that I have no idea what to do.

Thanks!

You'll probably have better luck asking in the Dolphin thread.

Sorry for the stupid questions guys I'm new to the Wii homebrew scene. I'm currently on stock 4.2U and I want to upgrade to the newest firmware so I can get the new Netflix update. If I do that will I lose the ability to ever jailbreak it in the future?

Edit: Searching around it seem 4.3 is a lot more difficult to homebrew so I'll just stay at 4.2 for the time being.

With homebrew, you can stay on 4.2 and still get the latest stuff on the shop, so perhaps now it's time to bite the bullet? Just update the shop. It's possible there is a newer version of the shop than the one mentioned in the tutorial (due to Netflix), so you might need to select the next version up if the specified one doesn't work. If so, please let me know so I can update the tutorial.

Once you have homebrew, it is also safe to update to 4.3 normally (although it is still not recommended unless you need some new feature, like Netflix), so you can do that too if you want.

I was able load and use Netflix without updating my shop again.
That is, not since the last update that hit around a month or so ago.

Has anyone else been having trouble with the homebrew browser? I can't seem to get it to load anymore.

It successfully checks for the IP of the site and then it just hangs there.

It stopped working for me a couple of months ago and I have no idea why. I didn't post about it because I didn't really care.

Anyone know how to find out which wii version I have? I softmodded a year ago and don't remember which update I have. I don't think it's 4.2 or 4.3

Are you following our tutorial? It tells you how to find your version number in most of the places that you would need it.

Just bought a modded wii this weekend so dont know much about it yet...I installed the Hermes cIOS 222 and 223 but certain games are still giving me a disc read error..they are smash bros brawl and metroid other M. They were both installed to 500GB HDD from retail disc. Metroid other M does it during the baby cry cutscene and Brawl does it after beating master hand in classic mode. Any Ideas on how to remedy this. I just wanna make sure I have this thing functional for Donkey Kong and Epic Mickey. Using Wii Flow and USB Loader GX and have tried IOS 222, 223, and 249

Haven't turned on my Wii in like a year(since I got my sf4 TE stick), I'm still at 3.2, what should I do? I want to keep a bunch of emulators + homebrew stuff, also my smash save file...

Both of you should use the tutorial to upgrade your homebrew to the latest versions. You can treat your Wiis as if they were unmodded and just follow all the instructions. NinjaKixx, it sounds like your IOS249 in particular is way out of date as it has the dual layer bug. After upgrading it, you will need to delete Brawl and Other M and reinstall them. gutabo, after upgrading your homebrew, you can choose whether you want to upgrade the Wii or not. Instructions for that are also in the tutorial.

And for those that don't know what I'm talking about:

I checked the tutorial and couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

I put a GBA emulator on my wii so I can play Mother3. I like having forwarder channels. Apparently the forwarder channel needs to be installed from CIOS58 (maybe 57), i think. My HBC does not run off of this IOS.

Can I use Multi-Mod-Manager and select it to load 58, and then use the MMMapp manager to install the forwarder channel? I looked into this, but 58 doesn't show in my list of CIOS that I can run MMM from.

So I guess I have to find the cios58 on the net, install it with WAD Manager, then load it up in MMM and install the forwarder channel? Before I put in the work, I just want to know if this is the right way of going about it.

Thanks!

The only games that should be affected are SSBB, Metroid Prime Trilogy and Metroid: Other M. I can't remember off the top of my head if Monster Hunter 3 is a dual layer game too, but I don't think so.

You have the totally wrong idea. You won't be installing any forwarder wads with an official IOS. Perhaps they are referencing the fact that only certain base IOSes in the cIOSes are supported by the WAD managers? Follow the instructions in the tutorial for the forwarder, but using the forwarder you want instead of the Cfg one, and all should be good.

It is also possible that your emulator needs AHBPROT support (which gets confused with HBC's support for IOS58 sometimes). That doesn't need IOS58, but I don't think there is any forwarder which enables AHBPROT.

Gotcha. Its not a forwarder wad. Its a dol that you have to run using HBC. Its for GBAVX.

Here is the instructions

Install IOS58 first, unzip the IOS58 installer archive, open the apps folder and copy the IOS58-installer folder to the apps folder of your Wii's SD card. Run this installer from the homebrew channel.
If you are using the Homebrew Channel just copy the apps directory from the archive to the root of your SD card. If you are using another loader use the executables/vbagx_wii.dol.
ROMs & saves files should be stored in vbagx/roms and vbagx/saves on the root of your SD card or USB flash drive. You can copy the vbagx directory from the archive to your support drive. Your ROMs must be in ".gb", ".gbc" or ".gba" format. To be clear, there will be 2 "vbagx" folders. One in your apps folder, and one on the SD root.
Launch the emulator using your Loader.

EDIT - I guess I just need to run the ios58 installer, and then it will install fine. When I try and run the program from HBC now, it tells me I'm running off the wrong IOS for install.

To clarify, the emulator itself works FINE from HBC, I'm just trying to get this forwarder, that apparently has special needs, to work properly.

Oh. The forwarder comes with its own installer? It's weird that it needs IOS58. The only thing I thought that was needed for is to allow reading from burnt DVDs. It is also possible that you will need to reinstall the HBC after installing IOS58 so that it runs off IOS58 too.

So, I've been reading up on this lately because I've been considering modding my 4.2U Wii.

Quick question or two regarding the Configurable USB Loader that's talked about on the GWHT site:
http://gwht.wikidot.com/usb-loader

On the Wiki, it says that your external drive needs to be formatted to either FAT32 or WBFS. However, on the Configurable USB Loader page at GBATemp (http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=147638), it says that it supports "- Loading games from .wbfs or .iso files on a FAT or NTFS partition" as well.

It the Wiki a little bit out of date? Is it recommended to use FAT32 over NTFS? Further down on the GBATemp page, they talk about 4GB limits affecting FAT32 drives but make no mention of problems with NTFS drives.

It only started properly accepting NTFS drives as of the latest full release, v60. I haven't updated the site to reflect that yet, but will once I get a good set of time to do it.

Thanks.

Would you recommend continuing to use non-NTFS drives? It sounded like the most support would come from WBFS, but I like the idea of native support in Windows.
