GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

I'm having an issue with USB loader gx. Yesterday I was able to install discs through it just fine. Today I went to install a couple more from my collection and I got a message saying 'disc error'. They are brand new discs.

Has anybody else had this problem?
Try another loader.

Yeah, USB Configurable Loader works like a charm, but I prefer GX's interface. It's also a pain to circumvent the autoboot since I'm in the process of transferring my collection.

I'm thinking about trying out wiiflow too. The UI looks great.

Quick question guys It might have been posted I'm not sure. I have my sd card on whe usb loader. Is there away to move that to the wii so I don't need the sd card anymore? The reason I'm asking is because with the sd card in my wife gets to the boot prompt and she has to remove the card and boot up and then put the card back in to play off the usb drive or load a load up a game of disc. I didn't know if there was a way to tell it to always just boot to the regular wii channel screen? Its not a big deal for me but my wife sees command lines and is like WTF.

What boot prompt? BootMii? Yes, you can set it to autoboot to the Wii Menu, and instructions to do so are on the BootMii page of the tutorial. You can also remove the BootMii app from the SD card, or copy all the apps to a FAT partition on your drive and remove the need for the SD card that way.

So I accidentally unplugged my external HDD from my laptop w/o ejecting it and now my Wii says it can't find the NTSF1 when I fire up CFG. :/ What can I do?

Partition: NTSF1 not found! Select a different partition or format a WBFS parition.

Edit: My Mac loads the external HDD just fine, and all files are intact with the exception of two games that I copied before unplugging it.

It's possible that the journal is corrupted. Add ntfs_write=1 to config.txt if you haven't already. Alternatively, plug back into the laptop and properly eject it.

Also, what happens when you push A when the Wii says it can't find your partition?

I tried both, no go.

When I press A: Opening NTFS partition...
ERROR: USB mount NTFS! (0)(3001)

I just realized that my drive's reverted back to a "Windows-only" state on my Mac. No copy or paste functionality, just readability. That's odd. Maybe that's what's my problem?

Edit: Now not even my NTFS-3G on my Mac will recognize the USB HDD as a mounted volume. WTF... are hard drives this retarded every time they're not zomgproperlyejected? Fuck.

I'm pumped.

I recently ordered a Classic Controller Pro, some component cables, and a 500GB portable HD. At the very least, the controlled and HD have arrived in the mail. I'm pumped to get back from my business trip and get everything working.

With regards to the HD, is it easy to get apps running from it versus an SD card? I'd like to move things away from my SD card and have all my emulators and whatnot running from the USB HD.

Yeah, it sounds like a journal corruption issue. NTFS is an advanced standard that stores some extra information and gets very confused if you happen to unplug it at a bad time. Trying to configure that journal is tricky, so pretty much the only thing that will fix it is a Windows machine. Running chkdsk on the drive will probably bring it back into a usable state.

Alternatively, copy the files off there and reformat to FAT32. You won't have similar ejection problems with it.

It's up to your drive. Some drives like running apps, others don't. It's worth a try though, and all you have to do is put stuff on the drive instead of the SD.

What is GAF's preferred USB Loader? I just switched back to USB Configurable Loader from USB Loader GX, because it is more stable for me abut I hate it's interface.

What does every here use?

I use Configurable USB Loader and have since the start. Perhaps my vote doesn't count seeing I am now on the dev team for it, though :lol

ive been using GX until about 2 weeks ago.

GX has the better interface, but it has some bugs here and there that config doesn't.

What I like about GX though is they have a website where you can get everything you need.

CFG as well, but it's just a forum post. Minor I know.

The GAF tutorial actually serves as Cfg's main site for everything else, with the GBATemp thread for discussion and release announcements.

Has CFG had any significant updates in the last while? I think I'm on v57c or some sort.
I'm going to guess you are on 56c as there never was a 57c.

You're missing out on full NTFS support, gamertag support (via Wiinnertag), theme downloading, new cIOS support (249 rev 20 and 222 v 5.1) and many other minor improvements.

So I've played around with CFG some more, and it's amazing. I found some of the options to 'pretty up' the interface and it's amazing. One question though. I like my titles to be displayed a certain way (lined up, and curved if that makes any sense) which happens when I push up on the D Pad. however, when I exit out of a game and go back to the menu the games being displayed go back to the default way that were arranged. I hope that makes sense.

Also, sometimes they are alphabetical and sometimes they aren't. How do I fix that?

Ok, so I like booted my Nintendo Wii up for the first time in like... 18 months (don't ask). I'm still on version 3.3u (what does the "u" stand for?). I'm intrigued about this HomeBrew stuff and I'm tempted to try it myself. Quick question, should I hesitate at all in downloading the 4.3 update? I do own a copy of Super Smash Bros.: Brawl, if that helps. I don't know if there is any improvements to the Wii OS since 3.3u, but I would like to get back into Wii Shop to see if there is any cool new and FREE channels. Not sure if I should hold off updated before I decide to try out HomeBrew.

Somehow, Gahiggidy, I'm surprised.

The display method of covers is controlled by the gui_style option. It can be set in either config.txt or settings.cfg, with settings.cfg having priority. The easiest way to save it in settings.cfg is to choose your favourite gui_style with D-pad down, then go to the global options in Cfg (push 1 twice) and then push 2.

You can also use the Configurator to set the appropriate gui_style attribute within settings.cfg. The one you mention is 'carousel'.

And yes, you can change the sorting. The default sorting method is Title Sort, which ignores articles at the start of titles (i.e., 'A', 'An' and 'The'). Thus, 'The Legend of Zelda' is sorted in the 'L's. You can change which words are ignored with title sort via the sort_ignore option. Set 'sort_ignore=0' for a purely alphabetical sort.

You can also change the sort to different orders with the 'sort' option, the sorting feature on the main menu (push -) or by assigning a button to the 'sort' action. Available sorting methods are by title, number of players, number of online players, publisher, developer, release date, number of times you have played each game, the most recently played dates or by installation date. You can also choose whether these run in ascending or descending order.

Thank you very much. I didn't even know about the - button menu.

After playing around with the HDD, I'd love it if Nintendo would just go DD in the future. I'm enjoying my wii a lot more than my other consoles now. The menu is so great.

Is there a way of changing the games' names? For example, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is incorrectly displayed as SUPER MARIO GALAXY MORE and Sin & Punishment: Star Successor is incorrectly displayed as SIN AND PUNISHMENT 2.

Also, if I have my own .mp3 song can I rename it to match the one on my SD card and use that instead? This default techno/trance abortion is making my ears bleed.

I still use WBFS and CIOS rev 17 or so, hasnt given me an issue yet on recent games. So I guess that's a no for the most part.

You should be able to access the global options from within CFG and manually update the titles.txt and wiitdb database files. Also, depending on your music settings, you can just drop a load of MP3s into that folder and have Cfg shuffle through them randomly. Clearly, you can delete the one that's currently offending your ears. :)

:lol That's actually a very appropriate name.

Nintendo actually has some really weird names in those game headers sometimes.

The WiiTDB download as Mejilan suggested is the best way to get the common titles for games. You don't need to bother with titles.txt. However, if there are games in the WiiTDB database that you dislike, you can also rename any game via files called either titles.txt or custom-titles.txt (custom-titles.txt has the highest priority of all naming schemes). Just add lines for whatever game you want to rename, e.g.:
SB4E01 = Super Special Awesome Mario Galaxy

But the WiiTDB titles will probably be perfect if you just want the real names of the games.

The default operation of the music option is to play all .mp3 and .mod files that are present in Cfg's base directory (Check Global Settings page to find out where that is) in a random shuffling playlist. I'm not sure why you'd have a song in there already, as we don't include any defaults with the Cfg installation. Or are you perhaps talking about the forwarder application? There's no way to change its little jingle, but there are other alternatives (one of which will be added to the GWHT soon).

You're welcome.

And yeah, I'm so used to helping people now that I don't think I can give it up. It's nice to see people really getting something good out of the help, though. It's amazing to think it's now 1.5 years since I started helping with this stuff and a year since I started coding.

So me and my friend got things worked out. He just took everything off and then we used the GAF homebrew guide to fix it up. Now I got the homebrew channel there as well as some emulators and usb loader gx.

I do have a question though. We fixed everything up using my 1GB SD card but I play to buy a usb hard drive for it soon. Will I be able to copy everything from the SD card over to the hard drive so I can keep my SD card open empty to hold my WiiWare games?

Yes, but only if you format the hard drive as FAT32.

First post on that topic.

I am looking for something to load retail non PAL games on my non moddel PAL Wii. I am thinking about Trauma Team and ExciteBots. Does Riivolution does the job ??

No, but you are in the right place. Click the Mario picture in the second post of this thread.

To back up your Wii disks to a USB drive and load them from the drive, like with USB Loader GX. Does it only work with up to 4.2 systems, or is there a way to get it to work with 4.3 as well?

1) Yes, it works fine with 4.3

2) USB Loader GX is deprecated at this point. The two newer options would be Configurable USB Loader and I think WiiFlow, although I've only used Configurable USB Loader.

3) The reason why it says "Easy tutorial" in the thread title is because there's an easy tutorial on this subject written by GAFfers and linked on pretty much any page of this thread and the best place to go to get an answer to all of your questions would be there.

So I have a 4.1U system with bootmii/hbc & configurable usb loader with a really old something-something ISO (I really never grokked how this stuff gets installed), and I want to upgrade everything to the latest and greatest.

1. Is this possible?
2. If yes, is it worth it?
3. If yes, what do I need to do? The wiki is great for starting from a fresh Wii, but I don't know what to do to upgrade an already modded one.

Hmm, everything worked perfectly as I went by the instructions, except for the last bit with the forwarder channel for the USB loader.

Originally, I had my drive formatted as FAT32. The USB loader worked fine. I installed the forwarder via the wad manager. When I ran the forwarder, it brought up the loading splash screen and then froze. I had to shut down the Wii via the power button.

Then for the heck of it and since I didn't know what else to try, I reformatted the drive to WBFS. Again, the loader itself works fine, but the forwarder now brings up the loading splash screen, then goes black, then restarts to the Wii Menu.

Any ideas?

Yes, a FAT32 formatted hard drive can play games through a USB loader.

I and many others here (Clipper is on the dev team) use Configurable USB Loader (CFG). It supposedly has the best compatibility, and even has built-in Ocarina (Gameshark cheats).

So yesterday I installed Bootmi, Homebrew Channel and StartPatch to play Kirby on 4.2.
Now I want to install IOS249, but the guide says to disable all patches before updating.
I started StartPatch again, and it says ""The patch section was not found in the dol" for the patches I installed.
I tested Kirby again and it works.

Help? Or is it not necessary to disable them unless you're doing a system update?

Yes, you only need to disable the patches if you actually want to do a system update. It is very strange that it didn't find the patches, though. It should have if you applied them correctly the first time.

What a while. There's a newer, better forwarder, but I've been away and haven't had a chance to update the tutorial to the new installation method. I just got home from my flight, but it was delayed for 5 hours, with most of that time being spent still on the plane without air conditioning. Thus, I'll probably write it up next week.

read this, but still confused as it only tlks about 4.0 and above...if I'm at 3.0 do I even need to bother upgrading other then upgrading HBC and getting usb loader ect?
Yes, it talks about upgrading to the various 4.X versions from 3.X. There are some games that might not play properly if you don't have some of the latest IOSes, so that is one other reason that using a game to update might help. I'm actually going to revise the update methodology soon to just go to 4.3 for simplicity.

Only thing I can think of:
The 2nd time I started StartPatch (to disable the patches) I accidentaly chose IOS249 instead of 236. It gave me an error and freezed. I had to power off the Wii.
Then I started it again and gave me the "The patch section was not found in the dol"

How do I fix it... ?

Thanks for the fast reply.

Is it actually blocking disc updates? If, after installing 249, a 4.2 or 4.3 disc still asks to update you, then perhaps you made a mistake applying the patch the first time. I can't think of anything else.

It still works, it's blocking disc updates since I can play Kirby fine. Haven't installed 249 yet though.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally run the update? Check your version again. Also, I'm not entirely sure Kirby had the 4.3 update...

A question about StartPatch.

When activated, does it block any kind of update, or only official Nintendo updates? Just wondering if it also blocks IOS or channel updates from something like Dop-Mii?
