GAF's Battle of the Rock Band Bands: ENCORE EDITION

And shag, plaid, everyone- chill. I know This Is NeoGAF Dude, but this is a game, it's for fun, nothing's at stake, no need to get abrasive over the whole thing.

I agree that it's for fun, but if all people are going to do is sign up for a score-based competition and make no attempt to commit to it, they're wasting everyone else's time. To me, it's really no different than any of the GAF sports leagues I participate in. One or two delays is fine because everyone has a different schedule, but don't commit to something you know you won't have time for or an extended interest in.

OK, after battling with my router for hours I have come out the victor. My NAT is now open! Hopefully our connection issues will be a thing of the past. Can you guys play today?

I'll do my best to be on later, but I do work on Saturdays. I'll be on at some point tomorrow for sure.

QFT.

I love the game and playing with GAFers, but organizing this thing is an exercise in frustration. For every band that actively competes, it seems there's another that falls apart due to one or two AWOL members. It sucks, and I try to prevent this -- those tourneys that regularly fall apart in the online forum are what I'm trying to avoid.

I'm sorry if I came off as combative, but keeping this thing together ain't easy.

It's cool, it's cool. I just hate seeing people fight over something that's supposed to be a fun diversion from day-to-day life.

I honestly think a summer edition in July/August will work out a bit better, unless my supposition is wrong and I'm the only 'kid' here. >_>

Yeah, it sounds like you'll all have to break up into seperate bands as no two Brits are able to connect to one another (WTF?!). I'll add you to the PS3 bench -- if any other PS3 bands need a member or two, please add these guys:

PirateSean (PSN: AKIRA-UK) (Britain) - Medium/hard drums, hard/expert guitar/bass,

I'm still well up for this if anyone needs a guitar/bass to fill in for a lazy band member :D

I got some DLC, so should be fine on that front now. Still, time MAY be a problem, (5/8 hours ahead of USA) but I'll be willing to stay up late on the nights of the actual run through.

I'm in complete agreement. If you can't find the time to get together for an hour or two a week, then maybe a competition isn't for you.

I completely understand it's all about fun and I love my newly found bandmates, but having the rules and deadlines change midstream is pretty wack.

I've never hosted an online competition, but I did help run a local Rock Band tourney last month. I appreciate all you're doing, plaid. Sorry I came off as "abrasive" or whatnot.

Our scores have been sent. This time, Drakken both sang and drummed at the same time. He's a machine!!!

I wish I 100%'d Wanted Dead or Alive. There's a very hard part near the end of the song which I nailed, but I made a single retarded mistake elsewhere. That's the worst feeling.

...It just hit me how rough Tier 9 is gonna be. There's not much to select from, so I know we're gonna get stuck with a song I just cannot play. x_x

I have no problem with those songs on drums so we can switch next week if you want. Or I can play bass still.

If your band can't absolutely destroy the tier 1 and 2 songs, then how are you planning on cleaning house on tiers 7+? Just sounds weird.

RROD (and not cocaine and whiskey, I promise) has left my voice shredded and unrecognizable. What should I expect for a $20 dollar 360, eh?

Plaid, you should handicap the Experience's scores as they continue to play shorthanded.

Drakken and I are the best drummer/guitarist on GAF (trust me, I've checked). Meaning if Green Grass gets picked, I alone will probably get 100k more than anyone else (current record 536k), if Run For The Hills gets picked, Drakken will score big (since he's currently fricken 19th on the XBL Leaderboards for that song).

That's all fine and dandy if you were comfortably in second or something, but if you're down like a million points going into the final round you're not going to make that up.

We're not gonna win. We're just gonna kick ass.

That was a great session -- thanks for playing, guys. I've gotta jet right now, but we seriously improved some of those scores.

Forget the extension, Medium Rare will be dropping out; we can't seem to find a time we can all come together.

I tried my best but with people not showing up to practices or not being available certain days (or sometimes for only one hour), it was futile. I'm not going to point fingers since I contributed to the problem as well.

*sigh*

Well, guys, these week's results are in and they're kind of a mess. I'm at a loss over what to do with them.

From the original 15 bands, only seven participated last week. This week, I've received just four bands' scores. I don't have enough scores to complete even a single scheduled matchup. Worse, two of the scores are practically unusable (by no fault of their own) as they are using songs that they selected and, because their opponent didn't submit scores, I have no way to compare "Black Hole Sun" against an average.

From experience, dropouts only get worse with time. As such, in a head-to-head tourney, I'm not sure I see a way or reason to continue this, barring a complete overhaul of the rules and format.

I was hesitant to make this version of the BotRBB head-to-head from the very beginning, but thought it would be the easiest way to implement DLC and, with the success of the previous iteration, I hoped we'd already know who would drop out. I was wrong, clearly, and any future BotRBBs will have to be more like the first one in format.

I'm sorry guys -- it breaks my heart, but I don't see a way to continue this. I really appreciate those of you who took part in this BotRBB and hope you'll participate in a future one, too.

plaidtopia, I appreciate the hard work you put into this. Sorry that it didn't work out. I know that for our band, Medium Rare, each one of us experienced some kind of schedule issue. I enjoyed our short stint and hopefully things might work out better in a future competition.

Icallitfutile, sorry the band didn't work out. I know I had some missed times, but you did a good job arranging everything to the best that you could.

Well, that sucks.

A suggestion on the next iteration of this competition maybe shouldn't just include time zone. Some people in a time zone have completely different schedules and might match up better with someone in Central or even Pacific. Just an idea I'm throwing out. Could be something like:

XShagrath Available Times: T-Th-Sat-Sun after 9pm EST.

That way maybe so many of these mixed up schedules wouldn't be so much of a problem. You just put the people with the same schedules together.

That's a shame... I'm not going to say anything negative but it's incredibly frustrating when people sign up for this and never read this thread again.

LakeEarth

I really really liked this competition, so it sucks to see it go. One idea I had was just to have bands, play whatever songs you want, and post your scores/percentages/streaks and compare them with one-another. No need to have a schedule, no need to worry if one group has DLC and another doesn't, etc. Less fun and less organized but it gets rid of some of the troubles.

duderon

This sucks, but it was fun playing with you, plaid. I would suggest picking DLC next time and forcing people to download it if they want to participate. The songs are cheap and if people don't want to buy 10 new songs over the course of 5 weeks, screw em. They probably would have dropped out anyway.

Sucks, but judging from the last few posts I can't say I'm shocked. I was getting ready to turn in our scores (recorded over a week ago), but I guess I can hold off now.

I saw this mentioned over on another board, but how about a "One Man Band" competition?

You should post the scores of the people who did submit, so we can at least see how the people who participated did.

We should all try to come up with some collaborative ideas as to how to make the next one flow a little more smoothly.

Agreed. GCQuinton, if you wanna send in your scores, I'd be glad to put them through the ringer and post 'em. Thanks for playing and thanks for the suggestions, guys. I may try to do another one of these post-Europe release, but I also may let someone else try their hand at it.

Couple of notes:
- LakeEarth, Drakken and Lonestar just killed Time We Had, with Lonestar playing on hard, LakeEarth FCing guitar, and Drakken singing while FCing drums (which is nuts).
- Similarly, someone from Bon Jovi's real group must be on Intense Flavor because they beat everyone else's Wanted Dead or Alive score by nearly 50%.

Correction, I should've clarified when I sent you the PM. Drakken was the one who sang for us this week, not me. Yup, he sang and drummed at the same time.

I really wished I FC'd Wanted Dead or Alive. I practiced the hard part again and again and FC'd it alone, but when it came to crunch time I always made some dumb error. I'd get the hard part I practiced, but screw up on some mundane part.

You missed radjago's 100% on Learn to Fly as well. Gotta give props where props are due.

I did 100% on vocals, but not on our best run. We were having some connection issues that screwed up our overdrive paths last night or else we probably would've scored even higher. :D

EDIT: And how is our Wanted: Dead or Alive score not the top performance? We scored higher than they did. I thought that was the criteria.

Playing favorites?

Eh, it's just whatever really catches my eye as I scan the scores. I was intending for it to be the one performance every week that either scored crazily high or helped one band really pull away from their competitors. It's not scientific and hardly biased. :p

First off, that really sucks. I understand the reasoning and really appreciate your coordination, just kinda bummed it fell through like this.
Mostly 'cause we were winning. Intense Flavor FTW!

Perhaps we can have some sort of looser 'battle of the bands' thread going on? Like, people can sign up as free agents or commit to bands. Groups get together, play whatever they want when they want (thus alleviating schedule concerns), and when they're happy with the scores put up a proof pic. That makes a challenge of sorts for everyone else to try and beat them. And of course, bands that want to can duel up against each other like this BotB format for a few songs, with some third party mediating, or people can just try to beat fellow Gaffers' scores as they want. Of course, I'd probably encourage bands to be at least 50% Gaf, so it remains an internal battle and not just a generic leaderboard that happens to have some Gaffers.

We'd lose the rigidity and closure of a real battle, but those of us who enjoy the battle and the camaraderie of these events can keep it going even more. And it wouldn't preclude these real battles- might even enhance participation.

To be fair, we did each song a couple times and our best score was when I FCed the songs. That's the power of the 6x.

I'm sad to see this end. I really look forward to it each week. Perhaps instead of a BotB, we should just have a scoreboard for score on each song. That way anyone can play with whatever group they want and post their scores and compare with the rest of GAF.

If plaid's not up for it, I'd start a leaderboards-style thread like what rad and I were discussing and have one-man bands be the first structured event. Everyone wins! (Except the people who lose.)

This would be cool. One-man bands could be the first event, like you said, and then we could have structured events every other week or so (that way it's not just a mess of various scores).

Go for it -- I'd be glad to let someone else try the reins for a bit and a one-man competition would certainly be free of our current frustrations.

Regrettably I missed out on the competition, but that may be for the best considering my wierd schedule. I'm definitely up for some one man band competitions or joining some jam sessions!

The new thread begins. Rules are open to debate, and I threw on everyone who expressed interest in the one-man band battle. Feel free to add more info- your DLC, play times, etc.- or even ask to be removed. That's cool too.

Hopefully this one will work out better, and keep going for a good while. These battles are always fun. :)
