Game Boy Micro <3 Thread

Woot, just won a Famicom one off eBay!

Anybody know places that sells Licensed, Hori, Keys Factory, or similar cases online? Play-Asia looks to be long out of stock.

Many thanks, just what I wanted to know. Unfortunately, that pretty much kills my interest in the Micro. I find the screensize of GBA games on the DS lite to be tolerable at best.
I just realized that GBA games on a DS have more viewable area than GBA games on a GBASP.

GBA on a DS has 79mm diagonal.
GBA on a GBASP has 74mm diagonal.

Crazy, ain't it?

Any different resolutions as well?

Crazy in that it is grossly incorrect. The SP has bigger screens horizontally, but GBA games don't stretch to fill the whole DS screen. There are black borders on all sides. The size of the display area is definitely smaller on the DS.

Wrong way around, GBA games appear larger on an original GBA/GBAsp than a DS. This is because the DS's screen has smaller pixels (Higher dot pitch).

What is funny however is that the DSi's pixels were enlarged to be the same size as the GBA!

I didn't mean to take the thread this far off topic. I was basically extending my earlier answer about the Micro VS DS viewable area.

Just to sum up the difference, the following are the physical dimensions of a GBA game's image on each screen:
Micro: 50mm
GBASP: 74mm
DS: 69mm

You guys have too much time on your hands.

Yes, because people who read/post on GAF are far too busy for such time-wasters.

I went a whole day playing Yoshi's Island on my Micro. I still can't get over the portability, but goddamn, it's an eye killer.

Hate to sound ungrateful for your trouble, and Shig's argument didn't make any sense, but I think you forgot to carry the 1. I just measured the diagonal of a GBA game on my DS lite and I get 69mm, not 79.

Still way bigger than a Micro though. :D

Ran through all 96 exits in Super Mario World on my Micro this week. Took me about three days. It was so much easier to keep at it on the Micro than the SP or DS. Really loving it.

I meant going outta the way to measure it. Why not Just enjoy the system?

What flash cart do you guys recommend? A micro system is nice but i dont want to carry all my carts in my pocket, rather rip them into a single cart

Ye if someone could answer the flashcart question.I did some searches on Google but came up with a lot of different choices so don't wanna get a 'bad' one.

I use ezflash IV it works well enough for all the games that I threw on it but I swear the battery drains about a third faster than regular carts. Maybe this is true for all flash carts can anyone confirn?

I had an EZFlash III years ago, and that was certainly the case.

I recently went through the process of buying an EZ Flash IV cartridge to play Another World on, and that seems to be working well enough. Make sure that you buy a mini SD card, and not a microSD convertor into mini. I had issues trying to do that, but the mini (which you can get through amazon, but I don't know if stores carry them, Fry's didn't) worked fine.

I got mine from this place, and it arrived fine. (I live in the US)

Sure musta been, considering it made you see an extra 10mm of screen where there was none.

Yeah, I double checked my measurement and I noticed the same. Oops. What happened is that, to be more accurate, I shifted my ruler over 10 and forgot this when I noted the length.

Thanks for pointing it out in a polite way.

What is the best place to buy face plates?
That would imply there's anywhere still carrying faceplates. It seems like that's not much the case.

It's kind of odd to me that not even the Chinese knockoff parlors seem to have any interest in making some. I mean they're still selling GBA SP replacement cases for like $5 a pop and assumedly still making profit on 'em, and those things require fabricating like 20 little parts apiece and a fair amount of material. A micro faceplate is one tiny, thin bit of plastic, that's it.. They should cost an absolute pittance to make, comparatively, and there's probably more people interested in replacing scratched Micro screens than there are who want to casemod their SPs.

Going for the hat trick of posts to maintain the <3.

Today I was sitting outside playing Drill Dozer and I realized two things.

One, the vibrations from the game actually made my hands start to feel funny after a long play sessions.

Two, this is truly a portable system, both in hardware and software. The games were really designed to be portable. The gameplay is very conducive to relatively short sessions, and the hardware can be played anywhere.

Compare it to the DS (in any form). I find that it is a portable system in the sense that you can take it with you on trips or to another location, but you can't fully enjoy the system in every environment. The games are designed differently. The stylus almost demands that you are sitting undisturbed. I find myself playing the system more in the quiet of my home than I do anywhere else. When I do have my DS out in public, more often than not, I am playing a GBA game on it.

I do have to thank the DS for getting me into GBA. I had given up on portable gaming back with the Gameboy Pocket. After getting sucked into the DS's touch screen gameplay (thanks to an EBGame promotion which basically handed me a new DS Lite for $60 out of pocket), I decided to try GBA. Now I have more GBA games than DS.

Here's a question: You know how a lot of the used systems in the wild are scratched? Does it get easily scratched by keys in your pocket? How do they get that fucked up?

Yeah, the screen/faceplate is just plastic. Generally it'll get pretty worked over if it tosses around with some jagged metal for a bit, just like anything else plastic.

I bought my camo faceplate about a month or two ago by calling NOA. Even though they weren't on the website. I posted about it when I did it a few pages back.

It has begun:

$45 total from Gamestop. I don't really like the faceplate but until someone sells one in this thread or somewhere online it's not too big of a deal.

something I did was buy a flat colored faceplate sticker to cover the original bad faceplate design.

I can't believe people would carry a Micro around in their pocket without the cloth bag that comes with it. I see pictures of Micros picked up from Gamestop and it's sad. I always keep mine in the bag when in pocket and they have no scratches.

I noticed there is a hole for a lanyard/wriststrap. Has anyone actually tried using it?

I wish Nintendo had somehow squeezed another speaker on the left half. This would allow stereo effect and hopefully boost the volume to a level that can be clearly heard in anything but a totally silent environment.

Dammit, i dont need this but i want it

Yeah, I've currently got one of those old Wii remote wriststrap on it. It's the tits.

Before that I used a keychain and put it on my carkeys, but yeah driving while a GB micro is hanging right in front of you is just begging to get yourself in an accident. Never lost my keys while it was on it though :D

i'm thinking of getting another micro (i already have a red one).

i want the famicom edition but i'm not sure which one to get, the US version or the JPN version.

which one would be better to get in terms of collectability and value?

As far as I know, the only difference is that the Japanese version has no serial number on the back, instead having the "happy 20 mario" logo. That and different packaging.

I have no idea why anyone outside of Japan desires that version. There is no sentimental value and I don't find them attractive. I guess the case color is nice, but the faceplate is fugly.

I noticed that you can get a microSD card and adapter for additional 9 bucks. If I do that do I need any additional adapters like microSD to miniSD?

it's nice to come and cruise in this thread once in awhile and look at the pics, and revel in the love for the micro. Like many folks, when it was announced (years ago) and shown in pics I was unimpressed and didn't care. Then I saw my buddy playing one and thought I MUST HAVE THAT. And never looked back..

Now some years later I still have a lot of love for the little guy. Nearly all my portable gaming had been on micro (never got a DS, PSP - for shame, I know!) and until iPhone it's been that way. Still, "for portable gaming with actual buttons," it's number one for me..

Even as impressive as the DS, PSP, and iPhone gaming can be, I really think the GBA is still my favorite portable system in most ways. It's simple enough that I actually really like taking it with me and using it on the go. Most DS and PSP games are complex and involved enough that I don't really think about playing them for 15-20 minute intervals. But there's something still nice about the GBA as a simple, featureless (no menus, firmwares, etc) system that can be refreshing now.

I always keep a Micro stuffed in a backpack or shoulderbag. It's nice to just take it out for a quick burst of Puzzle Fighter, Wario Ware, Rhythm Tengoku, etc. And more often the DS and PSP stay at home.

Quick question for EZ Flash IV users. I have a ton of GBA games from when I owned an SP but with the micro I hate carrying them around. Is the EZ Flash IV easy to set up? It stores saves too, right? Is their anything I should know before I purchase one?

I own two Micros the 20th Anniversary and silver edition with black faceplate I bought a silver faceplate off the Nintendo site before they stopped selling them I want a black micro so I can own a all black micro in my collection. I also own a Pearl Blue GBA SP and just about every good gba game out there most cart only I am only missing the Pokemons I do not own a gba Pokemon game, SFA 3, Donkey Kong Country, Super Dodge Ball, Sonic Advance it my most complete collection for a system.

the games work fine in my experience.

Don't forget to grab the anotherworld.gba on the official website. It looks great on the system!

Also, by default, the menu that you see is some dumb picture of Darth Vader. You can find tutorials online on how to change the presentation screen, which I set to something simple and elegant. Now I don't feel as dirty when I fire it up. You may have some issues with the text being in japanese by default, but setting to english is easy, it's in the 3rd option on the main screen, but there are full tutorials on how to do this too.

As if the controller 1 version wasn't unattractive enough.

I vastly prefer the plain colors. I don't really need random splashes of color or graphics bordering the tiny screen.

I recently got 100% on Super Mario World (Mario Advance 2), and I noticed that I died. A lot. I don't remember dying this much on the SNES. There were many times that it was clear I died because I couldn't see how close I was to an enemy, or some other aspect related to the super small screen or controls. I feel like I perform a lot worse on this than I did when playing on the DS.
