Game Boy Micro <3 Thread

Kodiak

Not an asshole.
Nintendo should put out a gameboy micro with no game card slot, but rather an SD card slot with access to virtual console for gameboy, gameboy advance, and new games built with specific graphic limitations in mind (such as Spelunky and Megaman 9). Sell it for $79.99.

Over Christmas break, I FINALLY came upon a copy of Medal of Honor: Infiltrator.

I still haven't sat down to play it, but I am going to dust off my micro for it for sure!

Maybe when the virtual console library get's big enough. Basically a GameBoy Nano or something.

I would buy that so hard.

I've wanted something like that for years, might've even posted about it here! (good lord how many years is this thread spanning now? edit: four years as of a few days ago!). Not sure they'd be willing to do a third system again and god knows their digital distribution kinda sucks, but they could make a killing if they got the kids/edutainment companies involved too...then again those guys probably won't give up that market.

That's too progressive an idea for Nintendo. They go in half ass on something like digital downloads because it allows them to sell you an N64 port like OoT for 3DS for $40 when any other company would make it a $10-15 download

Obviously off-topic, but the Dingoo (link to a recent version)I guess does that. Granted it costs around $100 and is not official, so "piracy", etc. but it is around the size of the GB Micro and has emulators for SNES, GEN, CPS, NES, GB, GBC, and a few others. (aside multimedia aspects).

You can emulate GB (but not GBC) stuff pretty reliably off a flash cart, NES does decently well too...but yeah that's delving into piracy territory. For media I'm guessing Play-Yan is probably still the best thing...and it's not that good.

That thing might be pretty big compared to a GB micro though. Going from the screen size and looking at the pics it might be a bit under 5.5" wide, while the micro is just under 4".

I will buy

Can any gaffers help me out with getting hold of a face plate? I've been searching the internet, and I can't find any at all.

My micro's screen is a bit scuffed, and I want to replace it.

I'm in the UK, if that makes any difference.

It would be better if the Famicom version said on the inside "Sorry, but your Gameboy is in another package"

Also I am about to embark upon trying to acquire one of these for Advance Wars goodness. Subscribing to this thread so I can trawl through the various images for the best looking ones.

The micro is perfect for Advance Wars goodness. I played through AW2 entirely on the micro and it was glorious. The perfect time killer.

I was also encouraged to pick one of these up... just got it a few days ago. Got the SMB 20th Anniversary model. Great packaging! The unit itself is cool, I guess... I think the d-pad and A/B buttons are fantastic, but the L/R/Select/Start buttons are pretty weak. I thought the L/R buttons were broken at first... I hate how particular you have to press them. Select/Start button placement is weird too, but OFW. Screen isn't nearly as amazing as everyone says, either. Nice collector's item, but I'll keep playing GBA on my SP+/DSL. The fact that you can't do GBC sucks, too. Form factor? Yeah, it's nice that it's small, but at quite the cost in other areas, IMO. Not a waste by any standard, but certainly a disappointment given how gushing a review this thing gets here.

Man I have to say the inside packaging for the Japanese Famicom GBA Micro is awesome. I have the American one and it's pretty boring in comparison.

I completely agree 100%

I've been playing a lot of my GBM this past week. Just love the form factor, so small and great. Bought an EzFlash IV so I don't need to carry my carts with me everywhere.

Someone earlier said that it doesn't do GBC well. I thought Goomba Color worked well with GBC. Is that not the case?

There's the "GBX" stuff which were GBC enhanced games, but they're (I'm guessing) basically regular GB games at their core with some additional color coding. Those generally run fine.

The GBC had some upgraded hardware iirc, so the true GBC only games are harder to emulate. It varies wildly though, so just try whatever stuff out. Some stuff runs full or near full speed, while others run pretty slowly. Last I tried was a long while back, so maybe the programmer juiced some extra performance out of the hardware since then.

I wanted to thank this thread for introducing me to this awesome little machine. I remember getting the original fat GBA on launch day when I was a kid. I loved that thing, so many great games, I had everything from Advanced Wars to Golden Sun. For some reason though I stopped buying games for it so I missed out on a lot of great games. I plan on playing all those great titles I missed on my new GBM.

Time to show off some of my GBM porn. I got this about a month ago while I was still waiting for my account to be approved.

Sooo I was at a gamestop the other day and saw a notice saying Gameboy Advance is now a collectors item and they don't want no more system/accessory/game trade-ins. Hows something like the GBA which sold tons become a collectors item after 5 years (if even)? An what does that make the Micro o.o?

Anyways today I was given 2 more GBA games bring my total up to 37! Sure wish I had some snazzy cases to put them all in like I got for my DS games. Anyhow what I gots was Ice Climber and The Pinball of the Dead! Tried 'em both out on my Micro straight away an some brief but good high-scoring times was had. Never die GBM!

I don't know about the other GBA models, but the Micro has become very, VERY scarce. (Good luck trying to find a Famicom anniversary version (bonus points if you can snag the 2nd controller variant).)

I don't know of any super-rare GBA games, though.

Loving my Micro, over here. With an EZ-Flash and Goomba Color, it is, in my mind, the perfect portable gaming system.

That's not surprising. The GBA is ten years old. It's time for them to stop taking GBA systems and games for trades. I thought they'd stopped doing it last year. All the Gamestops I go to took their GBA games out of the display cases last year and put them in plastic trays near the counter to get rid of them.

I have one, but it's not up for sale even though I don't play it. It just looks so neat. I'd really like the first party red cover though...so if anyone has one, or knows where to get one, please let me know.

Ya the Micros gotta be pretty rare cause its the PSP Go of its time (another thing Sony copied?!) but other GBAs as collectors items? Wayyyy to soon ta say that. If GS isn't accepting GBA cames anymore their stock will dry up and some will prolly become rare. Thank goodness for online and smaller local game stores.

10 years old but its only be "irrelevant" for four or five of those years ;_; The GSs by me still have the carts in those locked display cases aside of boxless-DS games. So sad ta see good homeless games!

I think I've collected all normal colors now, excluding the Japanese pastel blue, pastel purple, and pastel pink. Don't think I'll being going for the promo versions such as 20th anniversary edition :lol

I got one early last year for maybe $40, but $50 at most. It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but I couldn't resist. It was opened but in like new condition and complete down to the unopened, unused pouch. Here's the picture:

Even though I like the Happy Mario and cooler box on the Japanese one, I prefer having a North American version.

After unsuccessfully searching for a non-pink micro on eBay, I found a silver one in my local game shop for £25. Unfortunately, it only came with its charger (no pouch/faceplates/anything else). I haven't had much luck buying some of the games I want though (FFVI, Golden Sun), and can't find my copy of Yoshi's Island or Sonic Advance 2. At least I still have Minish Cap, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Pokémon :)

I do. I bought the black base with the silver plate - and then shelled out for the black faceplate. It's badass.

Agreed. That's what I did.

(Although I think Supervlieg was probably asking if anyone has one for sale. lol)

I love my 2 Micros (got Japanese Famicom when it came out and later a Black UK version - I want more). Its so awesome, I just wish it played GB/GBC games. I wonder why it can't?

It's probably too small to fit the legacy hardware. Drill Dozer is practically the same size as the system.

I hope I do not offend anyone with this post, but many Micros have found a home via this thread, and I have two which need a home.

I have a silver/black and a black/silver. Each comes with an additional, unopened, official faceplate of the opposing color. In other words, you can make a silver/silver or black/black configuration as your leisure. In fact, that is how I currently have them.

Both are like-new, complete in original retail package with every last scrap of documentation. There are absolutely no scratches on either. I used one full battery charge on each.

I'm asking $75 each. If you buy both, I will throw in the official link cable.
