Game Informer Review Scores - March 2010

Rebellion made a shit game?

The makers of SHELLSHOCK 2 and ROGUE WARRIOR were responsible for a POORLY CREATED GAME.

Whatever next? Blue skies and green grass? OH SHIT.

Actually, it seems like they would be happy rating games out of 40.

Mathematically yes. I was just focussing on the unneeded decimal dot.

9.25 out of 10.00 could save two full stops by being 925 out of 1000. Its equally as absurd.

I actually asked them about this when I interviewed their CTO back in December.

He was all like "no, no, this game we actually had a big budget and it's a labor of love blah blah blah". I then went hands on with the game and just shook my head. awful.

Boggles the mind that they can't see the absurdity of "9.25, 9.5, 9.75", I mean really, what is the point of that decimal place? Why not just rate the games from seven-hundred to a thousand?

Danthrax, you now have to translate the next EDGE thread to Game-Informer scores. Its your duty as the man who can.

Hahaha, will do.

What's with the two scores? 2 Reviewers or something?

Never had an issue of GI in my hands during my life.

I think they do "second opinions" on the bigger games, don't they?

Durante said:
Well, in many ways, Mass Effect 2 is also greatly stripped down compared to Mass Effect 1. That doesn't prevent it from being an even better game.

no, its not. not in any way thats comparable to what se did to the ff-series.

i also hope for rather poor ff13-sales, so the next ff (ff15) features big towns again.

The AvP score may be accurate, but it's a shame so many judge the game without playing the MP demo. It plays (more or less) identically to the original AvP, with modern graphics. Playing as the Alien is a ton of fun. If you got used to it from the original PC games, it's easy to jump back into the controls. 360 version, for the record.

Hey, one review doesn't automatically make a game bad.

At the end of the day, it's simply an opinion.

Even the best reviewed games will have big critics.

I think I'll wait for more reviews until I decide whether or not to get AvP, because it has looked very impressive to me to be honest.

you're right. here, let me translate:

Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (DS) – 5
Aliens vs. Predator (Multi) – 3
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (Multi) – 9
Bioshock 2 (Multi) – 7
Blood Bowl (360) – 6
Dante’s Inferno (PS3/360) – 5
Divinity 2: Ego Draconis (PC) – 5
Final Fantasy XIII (PS3) – 9
Heavy Rain (PS3) – 9
Lunar: Silver Star Harmony (PSP) – 7
Mass Effect 2 (360) – 10
No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle (Wii) – 8
Puzzle Chronicles (DS/PSP) – 5
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS) – 8
Tropico 3 (360) – 8

GOOD JOB.

Not that I expect AVP to get scores better than that, but that review read really awkwardly. I mean, marines having a bleeping sonar is bad? Aliens running on walls is bad? The Predator being a stealth character is bad?

I get the feeling that the reviewer, never saw an Alien or a Predator film in his life.

Go Battlefield!

Great scores for Heavy Rain and NMH2.

Mass Effect 2 was an early game of the year contender so I fully agree with that score.

Aliens vs. Predator (Multi) – 5.75

what a waste of SEGA's money , SEGA should have give AvP to other dev , it's a shame that they don't work with Monolith Productions anymore :(

Aw, I thought AVP was supposed to be good.

...

well , Rebellion ( the developer ) track record is shit , their latest games AvP: Requiem, Rogue Warrior and Shellshock 2: Blood Trails were all absolute crap.

I'm a bit confused by the amount of people that are surprised by the scores AvP received. What trailers have you lads been watching that I missed?

Shit, maybe maybe if GAF was smart they'd read up on the review and discover some of the reasons it's so low include the Aliens ability to walk on walls, the Preditor requiring stealth play, and the marine having a motion sensor. All which seem like fucking stupid complaints, and yet people are treating this review like the be all-end all. Then again GAFs fucking selective when it comes to accepting the importance of review scores based on whether they match their preconceptions or not.

I think its going to be a fan based game, if you loved the films you'll love the game. Much Like Ghostbusters last year, i thought that was a great game, but didnt get very good scores

well, there IS a demo out, not to mention that some of us already went hands-on with the single-player game.

Well...I think it's safer to say, "All people that love the game, love the movies but not all people that love the movies, love the game."

...and even then, I'm not so sure.

Right, and I'm sure you're aware that quite a few people really enjoyed the demo; to be honest it pretty much refutes any issues that the reviewer had with controlling the alien. Though that's beyond the point, some people here are judging the game on the review here, and as bad as the game is/isn't some of the reasons for it that are brought up in the review are pure cack.

I on the other hand am a bit confused by the amount of people who are easily persuaded by a simple number and nothing else, rather than looking up what the reviewer liked or didn't like before making the call whether or not to purchase something (a pet-peeve of mine in all review threads). I might have a somewhat easier time comprehending this general habit if threads like these focussed on reputable outlets, but this is GameInformer we're talking about... A magazine where the cover stories are its only redeeming feature.

Not to mention the 'quality' of the AvP review itself was laughable for reasons others in this thread have already mentioned. Hence the surprise by those who know better.

Not entirely. Haven't watched any of the Alien movies, only saw Predator two weeks ago when it was on TV, the previous games came out long before I was into PC gaming and I still liked the gameplay in the demo. The way said demo was set up though (8 players only, FFA Deathmatch, peer-to-peer, etc.) was utter garbage, no denying that.

no no no. Miles Edgeworth should be higher and WKC should be lower.

and i am still anticipating AvP.....

I'm not sure whether to agree or disagree with the scores since I have not seen the text / pros / cons yet. D:

(And yeah if the AvP cons are the ones posted in the demo's thread, wow :lol)

Agreed. About basing your purchasing decision entirely on a review score.

However, if you've played the demo, seen all the previews and trailers and take into account the developers track record, I don't know how you can be surprised by the score and that's without reading the review.

Basing your purchasing decision on a review score and nothing else is about as smart as getting punchy when a review score doesn't parallel your experience with a demo.

Spirit of Jazz, I'm looking at you.

I think this makes Sega's decision to can the Aliens RPG by Obsidian, who are actually known for making quality games unlike Rebellion, in favor of AvP even more questionable.

I've read the GI review of AVP.

Without a doubt, the worst written review I have ever read.

Ever.

Here are some highlights!

"The Marine campaign has it's own set of problems - it's setup more like a FPS horror than anything else. Having to fight Xenomorphs for the 100th time gets old quicky - it also doesn't help that your flashlight is useless."

"The Predator campaign is fun, and it's cool using his tools, but the combination of being forced you use stealth and linear level design made me want to hang up my hunter's gear."

"The Alien campaign, is a combination of the two, and like the marine campaign, it sucks. Aliens are bred for war, it shouldn't take more than three claw swipes to kill anything, also, navigating the corridors is very disorientating, and you never get used to it."

Also, the review dosn't even mention multiplayer.

Nooo, its getting ever closer to FF13 and its only going to get more difficult for me to hold off buying a 360/ps3. These review scores are like jangling a big-mac in-front of a homeless person.

:lol :lol :lol I still have hope for AvP.

So the Marine campaing is FPS horror? Sounds fantastic to me - just like the terrifying old games.

Predator uses stealth? :lol well it damn well better - that the whole point of its cloaking ability.

Alien is disorienting to play ? Yes! it sounds like it plays like AvP 1 and 2 - awesome! It is fucking SUPPOSED to play very differently than either marine and predator.

Faith in game restored by idiot reviewer :lol

Well yeah. If people actually looked into the text and still think the game (any for that matter, not just AvP) isn't for them, fair enough.

Some of the trailers looked pretty good to me though and if I remember correctly, some of Rebellion's lesser (to put it gently) titles were developed by their other studio and not the Aliens vs Predator team. So I'm still giving them the benefit of the doubt for the time being.

I can GAURANTEE this is real.

I guess GI figures AVP "won't sell very well."

He's complaining about the stuff that makes AvP what AvP is all about.

It's like complaining about driving Warthogs in Halo.

Finally, someone talking sense.

Shellshock and Rogue Warrior were developed by CORE Design. They got absorbed into Rebellion.

Angel of Darkness lives on!
