Game Informer Review Scores - March 2010

Nice to see a generous score for Heavy Rain. I mean, yeah it's an early review and from Gameinformer, but the positive reception so far is still encouraging considering how easily it could have gone the other way. I think I still get this in the mail so I'm looking forward to reading the review.

no no no. Miles Edgeworth should be higher and WKC should be lower.

and i am still anticipating AvP.....

Why is it that the Phoenix Wright games always get trashed by gaming journalists? I never see them do better than 7-8 scores from the bigger media outlets. It's like no one cares about writing in games anymore.............oh...

Basing your purchasing decision on a review score and nothing else is about as smart as getting punchy when a review score doesn't parallel your experience with a demo.

Spirit of Jazz, I'm looking at you.

Huh? My comments were pretty clearly aimed on the specifics of the text, in my first post in this thread I went on to spell out some of my exact issues with the review, I'm not sure how you're concluding that I was just upset that the game didn't receive a decent review? Don't try to paint me as the overly passionate/ignorant one, go out of your way to point me out when you were defending the review score without having a clue of it's content.

Why do people always get excited when a game they haven't played gets good scores, yet the review MUST BE WRONG if it's anything less than a 9? Makes no sense to me. At least play it before you decide that. And I highly doubt them giving it a 7.75 or whatever (example) would change your mind anyways. So why worry?

Funny to see people think a Game Informer review validates their opinion on a game.

Come on, people, it's Game Informer. It doesn't matter if they give a 10.00 or a 00.00 they have no review credibility either way.

I've read the GI review of AVP.

Without a doubt, the worst written review I have ever read.

Ever.

Here are some highlights!

"The Marine campaign has it's own set of problems - it's setup more like a FPS horror than anything else. Having to fight Xenomorphs for the 100th time gets old quicky - it also doesn't help that your flashlight is useless."

"The Predator campaign is fun, and it's cool using his tools, but the combination of being forced you use stealth and linear level design made me want to hang up my hunter's gear."

"The Alien campaign, is a combination of the two, and like the marine campaign, it sucks. Aliens are bred for war, it shouldn't take more than three claw swipes to kill anything, also, navigating the corridors is very disorientating, and you never get used to it."

Also, the review dosn't even mention multiplayer.

Thats like the IGN review that slated football manager because:

1. It wasn't like 'real football'
2. It had bad graphics
:lol

Still can't believe that FFXIII is scoring equally or better than the other installments, eventhough it has less content from what I read from people who got imports. Story isn't topnotch, gameplay is shallow, not much to discover (no villages, cities,...), etc... Are graphics really the only thing that count these days?

Rebellion only made shit in the last years, why expect AvP to be any better?

Looking forward to Heavy Rain, could be an awesome gaming experience.

There's a scan of the review going around and yes, it is as bad as it sounds.

The fact that someone got paid to write that garbage makes me sick.

It could simply be that those things don't matter to people as much as you think they do.

Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (DS) – 7.5
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS) – 8.75
I'm really surprised. Does GI like SMT games cause I really expected them to slap the game a with 7 just like Miles Edgeworth. Oh well, was hoping both games would get higher scores but it doesn't matter since review scores won't stop me from buying both games.

Aw, I thought AVP was supposed to be good.

Yeah, the bad score is very unexpected when you look at the last Rebellion games:D :

2009: Rogue Warrior Metacritic-Score: 28
2009: Shellshock 2: Blood Trails Metacritic-Score: 30
2008: Call of Duty: World at War – Final Fronts (Ego-Shooter, Playstation 2) IGN: 4.5
2008: Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem Metacritic-Score: 48
2007: Free Running Metacritic-Score: 61
2006: Miami Vice: The Game Metacritic-Score 63
2005: Dead to Rights: Reckoning Metacritic-Score 54
2004: World War Zero: Ironstorm Metacritic Score 60

Mmm, hopefully they'll have their God of War III review up in next month's issue. Not that anyone needs convincing on that game.

God of war 3: 7.0/6.5

+amazing graphics
- Plays too much like dante's inferno, even has a similiar boss design as cleopatra in this game

Guess you missed the memo on page 2 that the likes of Rogue Warrior and Shellshock 2 got developed by a different Rebellion studio than the AvP team.

I know. It's almost as if people have been reviewing the game based on their subjective experiences of whether playing the game was enjoyable rather than comparing it to an arbitrary checklist of features that determine if it's a good game!

Divinity 2 deserves higher, what were their complaints?

Based on reviews of the EU release I've read, cross-referenced with the 360 demo, I'd guess "it's ugly and the dialogue is embarrassingly bad" are probably near the top.

Yeah, I thought I might need to be more precise...I'm commenting on a pattern in which Mile Edgeworth is only the latest link. Go look at aggregated scores for the series (which hover around 80). Then go look at scores from IGN, Gamespot, and Game Informer, which all skew a bit lower. Maybe the newest game really is a turd (highly doubt it), but I see no reason for these sites to start accurately judging that when they have such a poor track record with the series.

Disappointed about AVP. At least there's Heavy Rain.

There are too many shooters getting the big budget treatment, and I'm going to include ME2 in that group. Yes there are exceptions, but shooters do get preferential treatment and games I'm hoping will get great scores rarely do.

Genre equality does not exist, in quantity or quality.

Were do they find these people? This man has never played a proper FPS before, I'm sure of it.

It's a Final Fantasy game. Any main Final Fantasy game is automatically guaranteed to get good reviews. Even if it was a visual novel, it would still get 8s and 9s.

i have a feeling that my prediction of FFXIII getting high scores even though it's stripped down in damn near every possible way will come true.

FF XIII won't get high score everywhere. :lol

You can be sure that there will be 9,8 and even 7 in the mix. Some site are clearly biaised toward western rpg and there's still a couple which probably favor jrpg. What will lower the score will probably be lack of free 10's which are often given by lesser sites which give 10 to everything that's decent. :lol It's probably way too stripped down for critics who are usually incredibly generous.

Mass effect 2 will also spoil some reviewers who will compare FF XIII to it.I expect an average around 87-88%.If you look at most Final fantasy in the last 10 years, most hang around the 90% mark anyway( except X-2).In fact, the current metacritic for FF XIII is 87 and the highest grade has been by game informer. :D

Heavy rain will mostly get good score imo because it's different from most game being released. Some 10,mostly9' and a couple of 7-8 and even 6 as some game critic view of what a videogame should or shouldn't be will rip it to shred or call it overrated ( aka I don't want to take a shower or shake orange juice in my videogames :lol Better yet, saying how it shouldn't aim to be such a cinematic videogame and that a movie should stay a movie or blah blah blah).I think the overall average will be 90-91% when it's all said and done.

As much as I like the FF main series. This is so true. Though with any big games these days, it's impossible to form an accurate impression of a game based on reviews.

I've been pretty much dark on FFXIII, haven't paid attention much to the JP release etc., and I have to say this thread is making me very depressed.

Nice to see that BF:BC2 is getting good reviews from the press.

I would have bought it anyway. The Beta, the demo and the DICE watermark got me very very early but still, knowing that single player isn't crap but a nice bonus on the best multiplayer disc of the year is a nice gift !
