Game Informer Review Scores - March 2010

These threads are always stupid (especially back when EGM was still around). Why do you guys even care or click on these threads if you are just going to dismiss a review score because it doesn't tell you what you want to hear?

The review for AVP is a bit disheartening but I still have hope. I did like the multiplayer demo and in all honesty, I am most concerned about the single-player campaign.

It could just be me, but I think that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard in my life.
Well the fact that makes it stupid is that both games he mentioned aren't released yet. So yes it is an incredibly short minded thing to say.

Why are these even posted, especially game informer's review. All they do is just give scores and reviews based on what game has the most hype, and which company pays them the most.

Wasn't expecting Bad Company 2 to score THAT high. It's been piquing my interest lately, and if the positive reviews keep coming in like that maybe I'll have to jump in.

Honestly, as much as I dont want to admit it, its always looked pretty "7-ish".

It's not like 7.5 is that far out of the range of what they've given the previous games. They gave PW1 a 7.8, PW2 an 8.0, PW3 an 8.3, and PW4 an 8.0.

Well there's that, and there is also the fact that the two games could not POSSIBLY ON HEAVEN OR ON EARTH be more different from each other.

The AVP score only makes sense if there isn't a team deathmatch mode in the full game, which in case Rebellion completely dropped the ball.

So what did the 360 version of FF13 get? Also great Heavy Rain score. Cannot wait for the game.

Just got my GI issue.

On the topic of the 360 version...

"What about 360?

Due to time-related factors, Square Enix could not provide an Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII for review in this issue. When we obtain our copy, we will evaluate it separately and report on any substantial differences between the two versions. Until that time, remember that this review pertains exclusively to the PlayStation 3 iteration of the game."

From another thread.

A friend of mine told me Heavy Rain is likely to be divisive due to the controls, so the high score comes as a bit of a surprise.

P. S. SMT: Strange Journey not important enough to bold?

Meh, I take GI reviews with a grain of salt. I'll wait for the EDGE scores, thank you very much.

No, seriously.

I don't really put a lot of faith in review scores generally.

I mean, EDGE gives Dragon Age a five but I haven't seen anything remotely in the game that deserves to get a five.

Why.

Their lowest score is effectively a 6 :lol
wait, out of the whole issue? Normally some shovelware or a Handheld game gets at least a 4.

Yup, SMT: Strange Journey is utter shit but Atlus obviously gave them a couple of million bucks. :lol

wat - is the game broken or something ?

Rebellion's been a shell for years. No reason to think all those years of cuts and poor decision making would reverse themselves to a 1998 state.

I remember White Knight getting massive hype on here and now its gotten to the point where a score for the game isn't even pointed out.

With FFXIII on the horizon, who gives a rat-ass about WKC?

So you've posted in a thread that contains posts that, in your opinion, shouldn't "even be posted."

Brilliant.

So using this logic, Strange Journey must be one shitty game, seeing as Atlus dug into it's MASSIVE coffers to pay for the review. Right?

Not to mention the massive hype for Strange Journey, it has more threads than Bayonetta and UC2 did combined. :lol

Nice, cant wait for the Heavy Rain demo, surprised God of War III wasnt in the mag with FFXIII though.

Reiterating this, since few people are bothering to read the whole thread:

I've read the GI review of AVP.

Without a doubt, the worst review on any form of media, ever commited in the english language.

Ever.

Here are some highlights!

"The Marine campaign has it's own set of problems - it's setup more like a FPS horror than anything else. Having to fight Xenomorphs for the 100th time gets old quicky - it also doesn't help that your flashlight is useless."

"The Predator campaign is fun, and it's cool using his tools, but the combination of being forced you use stealth and linear level design made me want to hang up my hunter's gear."

"The Alien campaign, is a combination of the two, and like the marine campaign, it sucks. Aliens are bred for war, it shouldn't take more than three claw swipes to kill anything, also, navigating the corridors is very disorientating, and you never get used to it."

Also, the review dosn't even mention multiplayer.

Also, CORE DESIGN, the makers of Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness, were absorbed under the Rebellion banner a few years ago, and CORE DESIGN was renamed Rebellion, and were an independant team from the one working on AVP.

THEY were the ones who developed Shellshock, and Rogue Warrior, NOT the team who developed AVP.

So we're all clear now, yes?

EA probably dropped too much coin on the Dante's Inferno Super Bowl commercial to pay off Game Informer.

Yeah, that's pretty horrendous.

Are there any interesting rumors in this issue perhaps by the way?

The AvP review doesnt mention MP because MP is fucking broken in that game. As far as I am concerned they scored it too high, I would have given it a 3.5 tops based on what I played.

To bad about AvP, I was hoping it would be better. Maybe DX11 can at least salvage some worth out of the PC version?

Great score for BF:BC2, going to pre-order it and get into the beta I think.

Bioshock 2's score is around what I am expecting. I think the game will score in the 8 to low 9 range. Looks like the extra development time has paid off for the most part though.

Hard to understand why people get so upset at these threads, it's a discussion board after all. If you find no worth in the discussion, don't post.

Yeah!

You got that right.

You have discovered the reason.

I'll have my secretary make a note of this startling and profound discovery of yours.

The quotes do seem poorly written, but it doesn't take rocket science to see what they are trying to say as far as their criticisms of the game. Sounds like the game in general just seems linear and repetitive.

You're wrong, the review does briefly mention multiplayer. The reviewer didn't like it. Also, your paraphrasing skills need work.

That is absolutely terrible. Seriously, marking a game down for it's basic gameplay; gameplay that is well established (and acclaimed) within the franchise is just plain daft.

I dont think bog standard deathmatch will get a look in when you have the likes of, Predator Hunt, Infestation, and survivor. There are surpossed to be 7 MP modes though so that accounts for 4, wonder what the other 3 are then?

I think i know why AvP got such a low score...........they were reviewing the PS3 version :lol

The only thing that needs work, is the screening process GI uses to hire their staff members.

It doesn't sound like they are doing that at all. They are saying yes, the marine campaign plays like a survivial-horror FPS, but it does it poorly because fighting the same aliens over and over gets old and repetitive.

Same with the Predator gameplay. The stealth gets repetitive because the levels are so linear. They aren't bashing the gameplay, but rather the execution. At least thats what I got from those quotes.

Mayor Haggar said:

Why would you lie about the mention of online in their review? That's poor form, Junior.

It's obvious you're really broken up about a game you're anticipating getting a low score. Is that why you're barking so loudly?

-The lack of enemy variety severely hinders the games longevity.
"The Predator campaign is fun, and it's cool using his tools, but the combination of being forced you use stealth and linear level design made me want to hang up my hunter's gear."
The Predator sections requiring stealth are dulled by only having one path with a successful outcome.
"The Alien campaign, is a combination of the two, and like the marine campaign, it sucks. Aliens are bred for war, it shouldn't take more than three claw swipes to kill anything, also, navigating the corridors is very disorientating, and you never get used to it."
Melee combat feels drawn out and slow. There's a disconnect with playing as an Alien but not feeling particularly deadly. The user interface could be improved to make environment navigation more intuitive to all users.
Not to sound like a shill, but the complaints are legitimate. A reviewer can dislike a game. It's their opinion, and having a diverse set of opinions out there is a great thing as long as people work to back their opinions on solid logical grounds.

This Game Informer review is fine. It's nice to see them be genuinely critical of the game rather than passively write it off as a 7 and call it "decent" or something. People just need to stop playing internet warrior for every big unreleased title. The review quotes and the score seem like the guy's real impression with the game.

An 8 for Strange Journey...

Hmmm.

Interesting rounding!

This is a pretty positive review coming from Game Informer, though. Looking over their past Atlus scores:
Persona 4 - 8.0
Etrian Odyssey - 6.0
Persona 3 Fes - 8.3
Persona 3 - 8.5
Persona Portable - 8.0
Nocturne - 7.5
Devil Survivor - 8.0
Digital Devil Saga - 7.0
Kuzunoha Raidou 1 - 7.5

Granted, different people likely do each one, but it's still surprising to see the game score so highly.

I got to play through sections of all three campaigns and I thought that they were all great. I love the survival horror aspect of the Marines campaign, I also thought that the stealth part of the Predator campaign was so much fun. It almost sounds like the reviewer never saw any of the movies, the Predator uses his cloaking to sneak up an stuff. It sounds like the reviewer just wanted it to be a different game then what it was, and he knocked the score down for no reason. The Alien part was really disorienting at first, but by the time I got to the end of the section I played I was having no problem using the celling and walls to sneak up behind guys for one hit kills.
