I think I'll make an effort to read the books over my mid year break from Uni, or at least make progress on them to avoid things like spoilers ruining the story for me. It's getting beyond ridiculous how far you have to go to avoid them now seeing as the show is so popular. I have to avoid Facebook and ANY forums until I watch episodes and it's just a major pain in the ass.

Trying to avoid GOT spoilers while being active online is like playing fucking Super Meat Boy. I get some perverse joy out of it. I'd have long read the books otherwise.

Funnily enough I was reading the 3rd book about a year ago and I checked where I was at a little earlier. I stopped at what I just realized is the Red Wedding chapter. When saw it was Catelyn, "Fuck, not another Cat chapter. I can't take this shit anymore." and never touched it again lol

As a precaution I abandon any thread, anywhere, that has a GOT gif in it. As soon as I see them I just know some A-Hole cannot help but spoil something while trying to be smart.

My buddy, also a lover of Game of Thrones, has sworn not to watch Season 3 until he has all ten episodes. He refuses to watch them weekly as he prefers to marathon it.

Think about everything that happened in Season 3, and him trying to keep away from all spoilers for nearly two and a half months.

I pity him.

I might read the books up to the Red Wedding, primarily for the extra lore, but being so invested in the show it would make little sense to cannibalize that experience this far in. Hell, I'll be picturing characters as they're portrayed in the series anyway. Besides, with Breaking Bad ending this year and Mad Men in 2014, Thrones will headline an ever shrinking list of shows worth getting excited for.

No idea why some are eager to blow their load so soon. Burn through the novels over the summer and then what ? At GRRM's work pace there's no telling when you'll see the story the progress. The series will probably hit Martin's wall as well, but 4-5 seasons from now. All things considered that seems like the better proposition. As a Dark Tower late bloomer I've read testimonials of its fan's agony and can only imagine.... Yea I'll keep my experience fresh for as long as possible.
It's not about the wait for the new episodes for me, it's about avoiding spoilers. Like with the people above, you can't avoid them anywhere.

It'll be even worse with this break with it being only half of book 3, I can imagine a lot of 'oh sorry teehee I thought they would have put that in this half whoops'.

I can see where you're coming from but it isn't about 'blowing my load' it's about being able to enjoy myself without fear of having something ruined for me. I'll still watch the show and enjoy it every bit as much because I'm a visual person. It's just not fun to avoid every thread or forum or video for fear of having something ruined so I figure get it done and then I have free reign to discuss and look at whatever the hell I want.

That is actually a valid complaint, actually.

Yeah, especially when "half the book" doesn't equate to literally finding the halfway point in the book and only shooting everything written before. I was talking to a mate after the Red Wedding, who is halfway through A Storm of Swords, and he said some plot threads have developed further in the book, but he hadn't got to the Red Wedding yet, so it was new to him in the show.

Yes the pacing, plots and subplots are different. You can't have a normal conversation with saying "well just read half the book" because it's all over the place. Read all of the books, or none of them.

I think from now on you can't really just read the books to catch up or anything like that. Season 3 is said be more than half of the book with some plotlines, some plotlines are made up for the show, some are left out and sometimes even the series spoils a bit from the further books, particularly for one character (or so I've heard from IGN review). And then with book 4 and 5 they are getting merged into 2 seasons because of the way they are written.

So basically if you want to read the books you can, right now, either read the first 2 if you don't wanna spoil the show for yourself or you might as well go ahead and read all of the books.

The show and the books are entirely different beasts at this point. The main plot points are the same but the how's and why's as well as what's known are completely different. There's a lot to enjoy in taking in both. Oh, and I just read the Red Wedding chapter :O

I better shut up now if the 'the books don't exist policy' is still in play.

Why are all these people asking for the spoiler to be pm'd to them like gossipy schoolgirls?

Anyway, who of the unknowns does everyone have pegged as a breakout star from the show (if anyone)?

I think Joffrey is hilarious but apparently Jack Gleeson has said he doesn't have much interest in continuing to act.

I just got spoiled the fates of multiple huge characters that will probably account for years worth of upcoming seasons in a thread on the gaming side about a Don Mattrick quote by user "hteng". He spoiler tagged it but it was so obvious what he was implying that it was impossible to avoid. In a fucking a gaming thread, out of nowhere, in response to some shitty GoT meme another guy posted. I cannot believe this. One fucking sentence just ruined everything. I hope you rot in hell, hteng. I'm logging out, I don't even want to think about the site anymore, I'm done.

Think of it as fake. That's what I did when I read all the "GANDALF DIES AT THE END", DUMBLEDORE DIES", SNAPE DIES balbla everywhere.

It could just be somebody purposly spreading bullshit to make people angry thinking they just got spoiled.

He'd probably be typecast to hell and back. How old is he? He looks like he could still be playing smarmy young gits a decade from now.

Surely he's been spoiled on the Red Wedding by now, if you've been on the internet at all since the episode aired you've heard about it.

I bet Michelle Fairley gets more roles full of devastation now.

Richard Madden is a boss, I can see him in a lot more TV shows and the occasional movie. He reminds me of Clive Owen in a way.

He uses Facebook pretty heavily, so I'm assuming he has, but he's also pretty aggressive and attentive in spoiler avoiding. I wouldn't be surprised if, like me, he wasn't spoiled explicitely, but was given enough context and teases to fill in the pieces.

Keep in mind he hasn't seen anything from Season 3, so unless somebody told him who exactly got married he wouldn't even know where or who the wedding was for. I don't think anybody has said to him, nor has he read, Robb Stark dies. But as he watches the series he'll probably piece it together.

From the sound of it he'll expect one of the weddings to go south, once he sees Sansa/Tyrion go off without a hitch that'll get the warnings lights going. The problem with spoilers is the expectation. Doesn't matter if they're true or not, the expectation and speculations that you have are coloured by the by the mis/information that you've heard or read. It takes away a whole aspect of watching something unfold. It's incredibly dickish.

To be fair there's 4 wedding mentioned this season so there's a lot of guessing to be going on there. You wouldn't know only 2 of the 4 actually happen this season until you watched it.

I've heard that a 'Red Wedding ends Robb's rebellion' halfway through the season and was still shocked as fuck when I saw Rains of Castamere.

How could one sentence ruin "everything" though? Literally every single book reader I know that likes the series has said the third one is their favorite. What I have seen so far doesn't seem to justify that, because honestly the first season was way better. So there must be a whole buttload of crazy shit in the back half of the book to justify all the hype and the high esteem. Or maybe its just because of the hype I expected there to be more. This season was good, but "best of the series" good? Eh...I guess I can see how it changes the whole setup of the story and what we expected going forward, but that doesn't necessarily make it the best.

Hoping season 4 will be better. Can't wait until casting/filming photos start coming out. Don't they start some time in July?

It seemed like a lot of people were hyped over Mance being in this season, but I only remember him showing up all of five minutes. Most of the new cast this season weren't all that interesting to me except for old lady tyrell.

Right? I saw people damn near pissing themselves in excitement for the new characters but most of em have fallen flat. Mance didn't feel like a believable leader of this group of fierce people to me. Giantsbane didn't grow a personality until about episode 6. Olenna was good, but I read that her role is actually expanded from what it was in the books. So again, I don't really see what the big fuss about this season was. Good television, but perhaps over-hyped.

I'm approaching the end of book 2 and it's so good I don't know if I can stop where the show did. Ugh.

Given where the show stops, I can comfortably say you won't be able to.

"All these unread pages.... just sitting here..."

edit - unless you got the crazy European Storm of Swords that's split into two books.

But the red wedding isn't until a hundred pages into the second book anyway

I always wait some days before continue reading this thread, in the hope that any unintended hint has already been cleaned by the mods then.

Thankfully, I avoided all the spoilers and had my GoT experience mostly untarnished.

Still, have to be quite careful. I read an interview with the actor that play's Gendry, and one of his comments by proxy implied that another (ie. not Gendry) character is quite important -since a lot of people tried to get on such role- and likely will be alive for some time.

Nothing special: I think we all more or less have a good idea of whom will be carrying the story in the next seasons, but still.. small hints may eventually give up important plot points later.

So, I will just marathon the other 2 seasons - It's the first time I do it, so anticipate a lot of "wow, I didn't notice that before!" moments. That, and the bonus videos..

Just a bit of a random fact: I bought a complete collection in Shanghai recently (all in English) and A Dance with Dragons is also split int 2 books.

Martin's response to the racial criticisms hurled at the finale/"white savior" scene. It's from his blog comments so I won't post a link, as multiple comments contain spoilers.

Martin:
Most of these people have obviously not read the books.

If they had, they would know there is no racial component to slavery as practiced on Essos. It is based on slavery as it existed in the ancient world. The Romans and Greek were just as willing to enslave other Greeks and Romans as they were Celts, Goths, Germans, and Africans. It's on the page.

However, when you are filming scenes in Morocco, and you put out a call for extras, it's Moroccans who show up. Most of them are darker skinned than our European actors (though there is actually a lot of different races and ethnic groups represented in the country, including Arabs, Berbers, Africans, French, etc). It is not so different from shooting a scene in Belfast and putting out a call for extras, whereupon a lot of Irish show up.

We fly our actors from country to country and continent to continent, at considerable expense, but that's not a practical consideration when dealing with extras. So in any big crowd scene, the prevailing skin color is always going to echo that of whatever the location is that you're shooting in.

But just for the record, yes, Dany is white, just as she has been from the beginning, and she may or may not be a savior (the last scene in "Mhysa" is not the end of her journey by any means), but she frees slaves of all colors, races, creeds, and nationalities.

Personally I thought the scene was bad, but my problem was more with how it was shot than the races involved per se. It just came off very cheesy.

I wanted to hook my father on the books, since he is not the tv watching type, and I found out that the books in my country are all split up in two parts. So game of thrones is two books with completely different titles (lords of winterfell and legacy of winterfell). And they translated some of the names. Jon snow for example has the word snow translated to our language. Wtf.

Extremely cheesy. the whole episode was in a way (Ygritte and Snow, Snow seeing Sam, etc.)

Agreed. I guess they felt the show writers wanted something lighter to end on, after the devastating penultimate. But none of it felt sincere to me, just forced and cheesy.
